Reviews My Porsche Boxster S (981)

God damn i told him not to put you on ignore, now we won't be able to enjoy him tearing you a new ass hole..
I hate the ignore function.

Oh I stopped using the ignore function some time ago. I got sick of threads not making any sense. I've just become better at not reacting to certain individuals.

But what a w**ker, eh? I've been ignoring him and yet he still feels the need to attack me, and on Martin's Boxster thread too? He has no class whatsoever.

Oh, and do people not like my fuel consumption thread? This is HUGE if true! I have lots of unposted data too.

That's good progress! Well done. :D It's just the internet after all.

For your sanity, and ours, just pay no attention (as opposed to "ignore") to each other. Oil and water - just is what it is.

I think many people really enjoy your fuel consumption posts and would welcome more. Me included.

I think that attitude is one that seems to be working...so far.

Thanks. I'll try and get posting some data. I have loads of new data ranging from the M4 Coupe, the 318i to the Audi A7 55 TFSI. The 318i is pretty disappointing. Just very busy at the moment (have a baby on the way).

So Aggie was back at Kyalami this weekend courtesy of Porsche's Lockdown laps customer event. What a privilege to be able to drive a car like this on such a fabulous circuit.
Moreover, attendees were given a most pleasant surprise during the welcoming presentation:

Yup, the local launch of the "one I don't need but must have"... 992 Turbo S.

Well, us regular folks need to just be thankful for what we do have and at least pitch up in a clean car... so, Aggie had a wash beforehand.

As for the actual driving experience on the recently refurbished Kyalami circuit? Once again, sensational and petrolhead heaven. What an amazing little car - so much visceral character and driver appeal - that never feels out of its depth around a big and demanding circuit such as this. It's all relative of course, and yes, more power and stronger brakes wouldn't go amiss - that's why Porsche have a GT car division - so a GT4 would do nicely, thanks.
Even if the GT4 is a stretch too far, I reckon the 982 GTS 4.0 will be plenty good enough - despite the 18-20% power loss at altitude. I just hope the 9A2 engine can match the aural appeal of the older-but-so-tuneful MA1 engine in the 981.

The GT3 RS group coming past the pitlane down the main straight... the sound is spine-tingling; all 5 of them flat out at 9000 rpm. F#ck sakes. Nirvana.

It was also cool to run into one of my former instructor colleagues and reminisce about old times.

All in all, a day in motoring paradise. Thank you Porsche South Africa!

That's my Porsche kind of day! The GT3 RS suits white. It's an extremely rare colour for the car.

I have hammered a 981 Cayman and Cayman S around the Porsche Experience centre in the UK.

The limits of the 981 are high and you can rev through several gears without hitting stupid speeds in 3rd gear.

How did you brakes feel? Good for the job or did you experience fading?

Not full on soft pedal fading, no. But definitely the rigours of repeated hard braking could be felt and the brakes got a bit grumbly occasionally. In fairness, I am due for new pads in a few weeks time.

Gearing is still quite long but not detractingly so. Best top-end was an indicated 202 kph down the main "straight" (it actually has a link in it) but I had to work for it. If the circuit wasn't at 1600m and rather at sea level, different story! Most other times 196-198 was achievable.

The straights of some grand Prix circuits are shorter in real life than they look telly. You might worry that your car will hit the limiter in the highest gear but in some cases that doesn't happen because road cars don't hit their top speed as fast as F1 or cup cars.

How do some drivers overcome the power deficit at high altitudes? Do they use intercoolers or inject more oxygen into their engines?

The power deficit is much more relevant to normally aspirated engines which in ingest air at ambient pressure. Forced induction engines suffer much less of a loss (around 5%) at the same altitude.
It's not uncommon to see superchargers added to NA engines like the older M3s and more recently Toyota 86 to force more air into the combustion chamber. An intercooler on its own - without a compressor - will not achieve any tangible benefit at all.
Drag racers will do both - forced induction and nitrous oxide - to up the power output of their engines.

Nope, only serious buyers (who put down a deposit) and Porsche SA VIP customers are allowed to test drive the Taycan. I'm neither. Sorry for them! :D

So silly of them. And their loss indeed. Being a new experience they should be trying to get as many behinds into the seat as possible. It is not about just selling the car but converting the hearts and minds.

I remember when Tesla was just launched here, you couldn't go anywhere near a showroom without them hunting you down for a test drive.
