My parents crashed there S60 Volvo: No Airbags Deployed...HELP!!

[Edit: Now imagine you're not wearing your seatbelt in a heavy frontal impact; imagine you've just hit a tree doing "just" 60 km/h and the car comes to a dead standstill in the matter of 1 metre... your body is still moving forward at 60 km/h and the airbag is coming at you at 200 km/h. Mike Tyson ain't got nuthin on that airbag - it will certainly break your jaw, ribs, sternum if not kill you outright.]

Martin could not have put things better. The car has performed admirably. Volvo are about as safe as a car can get. Your parents made a good choice in car.

As per what Martin said above, this is why people who don't wear seat belts and are involved in a crash that results in airbag inflation are often found dead. The airbag hits the face at such a velocity that it snaps the C vertebra and the spinal column. Instant death! That’s why seat belts and airbags are part and parcel. They are almost useless without each other in certain crashes.

Side note.

Mercedes Benz for introducing this safety equipment.

S60 2.OT

1 yearo Old, Around 18 000 kms, Purchase price was R250 000 ($31250-00)

Volvos have pathetic resale values in South Africa, And some are considered 2nd hand bargains, if u not going 2 sell it anytime soon....

Thanks for the info Farouk. Mine has also the 2.0T engine and i got it in Ash beige with also beige interior.

How i got the car is a kind a funny story. At first it was supposed to be the new family car, replacing the Renault Laguna, which my father was driving at that time. But in nine months it ended in my hands and dad got an XC90 and kept the Laguna for everyday use.

We got the S60 over the A4/3er/C for many reasons. We got it for 34.000eur while the C200 went for at least 38.000eur, way over our badget, and also a stripped out 318 went for 35k. Also we had ruled out the A4 because my father didn't like its looks. Also the S60 had much more equipment that the others had standard and was comfort enough, since both me and my father like comfort more than sport. And it was big enough. Simple as that.

Thanx for the info Giannis...I love the feel of the drivers seat, but the back is wayy cramped..yeah the S60 is excellent value for your money car...what are your thoughts on the S40? Current shape...

About the S40, i think it's very nice designed, inside out but i haven't driven it.. In black it looks awesome!

I've always liked Volvos. I like the S60 a lot, especially with the D5 motor (actually it's the only one I drove).

I drove some V50s (diesel), because I love the look and especially the clean and zen interior. I have to say, I was deceived by it. The interior looks superb, yet the materials don't feel nearly as solid as in the Germans. It's a bit on the cheap side, even if the dash itself is made of an upscale material, the accessories, buttons feels a bit light. However, I'm quite sensitive in that aspect, so maybe it's not that dramatic.

Concerning the drive: well, trouble is, you clearly feel the Focus under it. It's reasonably comfortable, quite nimble, feels good, not too noisy.
However, you never have this upscale feeling, this premium feel you have in A4, 3er or C-Class. It's quite average to drive. In the 3 Germans, you clearly have something more.

So I would say: a good car, offering very good value for money, with a really stylish interior, but not really at the same level as the Germans. However, you're doing nothing wrong by choosing such a car!

What i like in Volvos is the comfort they offer. I might drive mine like crazy (my av. fuel consumption is now more than 16l/km, instead of the usual 9) but i never feel all those bumps of the road and those seats... Much more comfortable than my sofa. What bothers me a bit, is that they could make it more soundproof and i have some quality issues, with some parts. But to me it gives a nice feel..

But what they could really improve is the feel of the pedals and the steering wheel. I have got used to them now after all those years, but recently test drove the trio 3er, C, A4 and i see that they could be waaaaaay better.
