Motor Trend Names SUV Of Year For 2007

Motor Trend magazine has named the Mercedes-Benz GL450 as its sport utility vehicle of the year for 2007.

The SUV was picked from a field of 22 vehicles, the largest crop of SUVs ever evaluated by the magazine.

"The GL may be a surprise winner for many people," Motor Trend editor-in-chief Angus MacKenzie said in a statement. "The first full-size sport utility from Mercedes is not cheap, but it has astonishing technology. It offers a seven-speed automatic transmission and a V-8 engine with 335 horsepower."

The Mercedes has the most comfortable third-row seating of any SUV tested, the magazine said. It also will come with a diesel engine that runs on new low-sulfur fuel.

MacKenzie added, "The GL extends the reach of Mercedes-Benz in the sport utility segment, and is certainly the best sport utility they've made. In every facet, from performance to the interior, the vehicle is a winner," MacKenzie said.

The SUV competition this year reflected the market shift away from truck-based SUVs toward car-based vehicles, MacKenzie said.

This year, only the GL, the Jeep Wrangler and the Toyota FJ Cruiser had real off-road capability, he said. Many of this year's SUVs are offered in two-wheel-drive versions that will be popular in states where weather and roads aren't a problem, he said.

"It's the 21st-century station wagon, neither truck- nor car-based, and truly belongs in its own category," MacKenzie said of the SUV. "That is why this year's contest looked more closely at on-road drivability than rock-crawling."

The editorial staff at the magazine evaluated the vehicles in three areas: significance in engineering, technology and features; superiority in performance and quality; and value. Staffers drove the vehicles on streets and the test track, as well as off the road.

Eligible vehicles had to be new or substantially upgraded and go on sale in the 12 months after Nov. 1, 2006.

The GL450 has a suggested retail price of $55,675.

The rest of the 22 vehicles Motor Trend evaluated include:

Acura MDX, Acura RDX, Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Nitro, Ford Edge, Ford Expedition El, GMC Yukon Denali XL, Honda CRV Ex-L, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Wrangler, Lincoln MKX, Lincoln Navigator, Mazda CX-, Mitsubishi Outlander, Suzuki X17, Toyota FJ Cruiser, and the Toyota RAV4

Kudos to MB :eusa_clap

... but I would have liked to see the Q7 win this.

Is this the most expensive SUV that has won their award? Awesome job, it's definitely one of my favorites.

Amazing! The GL has really kicked tail in comparison tests and now this award!
MB sure is coming back strong and maby quicker than I previously thought.

This has to be my favorite large SUV right now and the best one to date!:t-roses:

Congrats Merc, I liked GL more than Q7 & its my favorite too, but its bigger brother the mighty G-wagon is my most favorite one..:usa7uh:

I'm surprised the Escalade didn't win for its Pimp Factor.

I'm glad the GL won, there was some tough competition there. However, I prefer the good ol' G-Wagon or a Range Rover over the GL.

Still, congrats to MB.

Audi is paying the lack of prestige compared to Mercedes in US.

When looking at those other contesters like Suzuki and Mitsubishi, I don't think pretige had nothing to do with this naming.

You mean that Suzuki has more prestige than Mercedes?;)

Prestige has nothing to do with this Award. Everything from Nissans to Land Rovers have won it before.

If i 'm not mistaken Touareg had won the award a few years ago.

I was looking around on the net and I found this info out on mbusa.com. I am very happy for them. It has received excellent reviews from nearly every car magazine. I've seen it in person and it really stands out.

Yes, Audi did a good job with the Q7, but it's time for Benz to get some awards. They deserve a hell of a lot more credit then they have been getting.

Their's so many great suv's in the price range of a GL, I can't see it making that big of a splash in the U.S!

I really don`t see where your statement is justified. Audi is doing very good here in the US and have really come up the prestige charts in the last 3-years.. heck thay have all but ski-rocked, it no joke. As others have said this test has nothing to do with prestige but overall performance and quality..

The GL must be credited for that because it has passed the grades in a whole number of different catagories` other SUVs in it class only wish for.

It`s all on paper for the GL. MB once again has done a fine job in design work!:eusa_danc
