Vs Motor Trend - Comparison: 2009 Audi A8 vs 2009 BMW 750Li vs 2009 Mercedes-Benz S550

No luck. :t-banghea

One of the salesman I know is on vacation and the other two are new and don't know me and would never give me a car to drive. God damn. :t-banghea

Based on their test data, I can't understand why the BMW should be placed last.
Unless their overall evaluation is heavily skewed on the basis of looks which is quite subjective because the 750li is certainly not the ugliest of the 3. In terms of pricing, it is certainly not the most expensive.

I agree ... it's all about bitching.

They didn't like interior design ( :eusa_thin ) nor they sensed "tactile delight" - despite ceramic trim. They find iDrive still too complicated & the car too tech-loaded. Interior "too bloated". Steering wheel "not luxurious enough". All car responses feel jerky to them. Ride comfort not sufficient, and the chassis not dynamic enough. Steering was "just OK". They described 7er as a car for perfect drive on straights only. :t-hands:

What a "lousy" car, indeed. :t-crazy2:

Sure 7er will never be as luxurious & comfortable as the S-class ...

Well, they did not like the car. A good thing is that they could not find anything objectively wrong about it.

I fully agree! I actually thought too myself after I read the article...
They can't really pin point a spesific negative that is objective....

HAHA Yes! The motoring press :t-banghea

Amazing how the whining and excuses start flying when a BMW drops a test. Cars of this type aren't about sheer speed (that being where the BMW has the biggest and only real advantage in this test) and handling. If sheer numbers on a chart determined the outcome everytime all any car maker has to do is engineer their cars to have the best numbers. These are luxury cars not outright sports sedans.

Its almost as if no magazine is allowed to not like a BMW. Ridiculous.

OK, we all know 7er is not all about ultimate luxury in this segment - like the S-class is. So, it's fair to say that.

But this "review" completely trashed the new 7er - they didn't LIKE anything. Not the drive, not the interior, not the exterior, not the tech. Nothing. That's not a professional & objective test. It's biased & very subjective. Just like some "reviews" that praise the new 7er a bit too much.

7er is not perfect - and it's fair to point some OBJECTIVE faults & disadvantages out. But bitching like the car is a complete trash, not worthy of the segment ... C'mon.

They are the only ones who trashed the car in their review. Something that says much more about the mag than about the car itself. :t-crazy2:

And as said: why would anyone want an S-class clone with a propeller logo? Or a 3er clone with four rings, or a star. Customers want alternatives - not substitutes. And the points of the alternatives are to offer ALTERNATIVE character, not the same one with different badge.

Sometimes I wonder about the competence of the "automotive" journalists. Some of them are so ignorant it's almost hard to believe that's even possible - a journalist being such a m....n.

I wonder what's the point of publishing reviews or test drives in the press / media if just pointing out subjective opinion of the author, while subjective facts don't even matter. :t-hands:

That's more like an entertaining than informative then. But in such case it doesn't matter who write it - either a "automotive journalist", or a Paris Hilton, or even my granny.

And that's what bothers me the most ... Automotive media becoming more & more an entertaining media, and less of informative ones. Not to mention the trend of payed articles - which nothing else than pure PR yet camouflaged.

See, but the problem with your argument about the "magazine" is that they love BMW's other models, like the 3-Series and the M3. Did you not read what they said about the M3 possibly being the best all around car in the world?

Now either they know what they're talking about or they don't, you can't have it both ways. Simply put they didn't like the BMW 7-Series in this test, I say in this test because if another 7 is equipped differently they might change their mind or their tested could have been flakey, but to trash the magazine is just as absurd because when they champion BMWs I don't see anyone complaining.

Again, what you're doing here is nothing but whining and complaing about nothing because I see you taking no issue with them thinking that the M3 is possibly the best car in the world. If Motor Trend is imcompetent then they don't know what they're talking about with the M3 either.

I can only speak for myself- I think leaves me bewildered is the basis of the conclusion: is it looks, comfort, price, safety, fuel economy, dynamics etc.
It seems MT is saying that in all departments that count, the Bmer ranked the lowest or some where below the top to be evaluated as the worst in their mind. Now that is my gripes, because it really doesn't add up.

They just champion the segment Kings. And trash the competition. Is this a good journalism? Hardly.

As I said: they are full of stereotypes, and they stick to them very effectively.

My problem with this particular article is they only pointed out SUBJECTIVE claims pro & contra. While objective facts had been ignored.

They probably like M3 & 3er for the same reasons - SUBJECTIVE reasons. And that sucks.

Journalism should point out OBJECTIVE facts & observations, and left the viewer / reader to make his own mind - to make his own conclusions.

But today journalists act like Gods - turning thumbs up or down. All decisions mostly based on their personal preferences.

To me that's primitive, and offensive to the readers / viewers.

Do you really think price is a big factor when both cars are over 100K and are within 5K or so of each other? When you look at all the numbers the differences are so slight in most cases it even a worth mentioning. The only place where the BMW proved outright superior is in acceleration. How does that Magazine measure safety? If that is something they look at Mercedes reputation easily trumps BMW's. This type of test is more subjective than objective....particularly when you have cars this good and evenly matched.

The design of the 7er in these pics is so striking. I think it must be the Black. It looks so sleek. I would take either the S or the 7 in a heartbeat. Though I think the S's interior is better executed.

Wrong. If that was the case then the M5 wouldn't have been beaten by a Cadillac.

Then you need to find a car with better numbers in every category and there is your ride. Just looking as numbers is the most primitive way to look at a car. Now you're telling me that the subjective doesn't count? Really, so when a M3 beats a 911 you're telling me that they're wrong because the 911 puts down better numbers (objectively the 911 should be the winner)...but the M3 drives better (subjective) and thus wins? Have you even looked at the numbers? Do you realize these are not sport sedans and that BMW's pure talent is at the other end of the market? Why is it that BMW must be almighty in every segment?

Since when did a BMW become all about the numbers and not the subjective driving experience? I have never seen such a bunch of two-faced, dual-sided excuses in my life. BMW's almost always win on subjectives because they often times don't put down the best numbers! Where have you been?
