MINI SAV: Spy Pics & Info

MINI crossman is coming
Beefed-up supermini is taking shape – and we've got all the details.

The MINI is toughening up – with this new 4x4 model, on sale next year.

Sitting above the Clubman estate variant, it will further develop the MINI line-up, and compete with other lifestyle SUVs such as the Ford Kuga.

The model will also rival forthcoming prestige brand 4x4s like the BMW X1, with which it shares underpinnings.

Bosses haven’t decided on a name yet, but Auto Express has learned that Crossman is leading the charge as the favoured badge at this stage.

As you can see from our pictures – produced using inside information – the MINI SUV takes the look that was debuted by the Club-man and adds a bit more muscle. It features extra body cladding and a raised ride height to provide a more beefy stance and a chunky shape. Details such as the roof rails and side rubbing strips complete the look.

Yet with its bold circular headlights, oversized grille and trademark clamshell bonnet, the newcomer still has the cheeky appearance of the hatch. And that’s vital – owner BMW didn’t want too aggressive a design that would tread on the toes of the X1, or alienate the legions of buy-ers who are loyal to the MINI brand.

While the styling is clearly inspired by the Clubman, the 4x4 has a more conventional layout – there are two proper rear passenger doors, instead of the single ‘Clubdoor’ that features on the estate. These combine with the distinctive twin van-style openings on the tailgate – also seen on the Club-man – to ensure the off-road MINI is the most practical car in the range.

As it sits on a stretched version of the standard load-lugger’s platform, the SUV will offer more space inside. That means there will be adequate room in the back for two adults – although thanks to those rear doors, access should be much better.

The dashboard and all other interior detailing will be carried over from the Clubman. But the question on the lips of all MINI fans is: will the latest MINI be a proper off-roader, like the Land Rover Freelander?

Not really. The SUV will be biased towards on-road use, and won’t sacrifice the agile, driver-pleasing hand-ling for which MINI has become famous. Nevertheless, there will be a full-time four-wheel-drive system, said to have been developed by transmission expert Getrag. Add in the raised ride height, and the car will be reasonably capable over rough terrain – easily rugged enough for most buyers.

Top brass are conscious they are introducing an SUV at a time of feverish environmental awareness, so they will make the model the cleanest and most frugal fuel-wise in its class. As a result, every variant will benefit from the Efficient Dynamics tweaks seen elsewhere in the range, with a stop-start system cutting the engine when the car comes to a standstill and a clever alternator control which only charges the battery when needed.

The engine line-up will be carried over from the Clubman, although an entry-level One model isn’t likely to be offered. That means buyers will be able to choose from the 118bhp 1.6-litre Cooper, the 109bhp 1.6-litre diesel Cooper D and the flagship 173bhp 1.6-litre Cooper S. A six-speed manual transmission will be standard, with an automatic box on the options list.

Testing of the SUV is well underway – as revealed by our spy shots (see panel, right). But fans will have to be patient, as it will be some time before the final showroom model is ready.

As it did with the Clubman, MINI will preview the car with a series of concepts, and the first is expected to be displayed at a major motor show later this year. Production will start shortly afterwards – the off-roader is being assembled at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria because MINI’s factory in Oxford is already at peak capacity – and the car will arrive in dealers here towards the end of 2009.

There’s no official word on prices yet, but with the Clubman starting at £14,235, entry-level models are likely to kick off at around £15,500.

It seems illustrators when interpreting latest BMW Group developments that are forthcoming always fall foul to a popular design based illness .
With BMW interpretations it's CS-Konzeptitis , For Rolls-Royce it's Phantomitis and for the upcoming MINI Cross-man it's MINIClubmanitis. :D

And sadly there seems to be no cure, For a good indication of how the MINI Cros-Man will look you have to look at how chunkier the MINI Concept Car series was compared to the production MINI Clubman and at the chunkier expanded flanks and the way the headlights sit on the front of the car in a higher position with an enlarged MINI grille which will include lightbars and encased spotlights. Then you can see how current MINI cues will fit in with the design such as the expanded moulded wheel arches and the clubman's raised roof.

But you will see official MINI interpretations quite soon as the Cross-Man will follow the MINI Clubman with a appetite whetting series of Individual Concept Cars all based on seasonal sports with equipment to suggest several environments for the MINI Cross-Man.

MF Exclusive: A MINI Diesel is Coming to the US Market but it’s not the one we all expect - the MINI Cooper D. Instead MINI has been working on a new model designed from the ground up with an engine that will comply with laws in all 50 state. You know it as the R60, the public will know is as the MINI crossover.
The diesel powered R60 will likely use a new BMW derived 4 cylinder engine and will feature an urea injection system similar to the one seen on BMWs. The R60 is expected to launch worldwide in late 2009 as a 2010 model in a range of petrol engines (including the new JCW 1.6L turbo) and we would expect the diesel to be at least six months behind that schedule.

very interesting in my opinion is that they want to include the JCW engine in the line up. this seems to confirm that BMW has no problems with performance SUVs anymore

Looki looki what we've got here!! Shape is awesome and what's great is that it comes with the same kitchen-cabinet styled doors as the Clubman. With decent levels of Mini Cooper DNA in the driving dynamics it can be a major cash cow for BMW AG.

Do we know how good the off-road capabilities of this car will be?

In its Automobile News interview today, Herr Reithofer refers to the Mini SAV as the MINI Colorado.
So, MINI X ? MINI Cros-Man ? MINI Crossman ? or MINI Colorado ?

We think the MINI SAV or MINI-X as it is known will be quite popular as a lifestyle addition to the MINI family, the marketing for this car is purely on the Lifestyle image the car will identify with. The MINI Speedster is purely based on the cabrio but with a more raked appearence and strictly for two - The marketing for this car is again specific to the sporting aspects of the car and we will connect this to car to culture like music and fashion.
In a similar more pronounced way of the current MINI marketing - The Speedster is MINI amplified in every respect and a good forshadow of what is coming for specific customers from the MINI Brand.

XXX Hard core BMW fan or not...with all respect Scott...Brand preferance aside, the Mini is much better looking - especially for the same marketing reasons as the X1. :t-banghea

This is going to be one hell of an internal battle between the Mini X and X1!!! :bangin:

In this segment the Mini brand has NO FEAR from a BMW badge!
Mini rules this market niche and segment OK!:t-cheers:

Again the MINI is even more compact than the X1. There will be specific customers for the MINI-X as well as for the X1.
MINI-X will be positioned under the BMW X1 , so the entire BMW Group will look like : MINI-X , BMW X1 , BMW X3 , BMW X5 and BMW X6 being the top end model. If we go down the X2 , X4 Route then they will be positioned accordingly.

I don't think a more marketing driven automotive company exists outside of BMW.

MINI

Mini (stylized as MINI) is a British automotive brand founded in 1969, owned by German BMW since 2000, and used by them for a range of small cars assembled in the United Kingdom, Austria, and the Netherlands. The word Mini has been used in car model names since 1959, and in 1969 it became a brand in its own right when the name "Mini" replaced the separate "Austin Mini" and "Morris Mini" car model names.
