The MINI Rocketman has entered that phase where everything is broken down and discussed to see what is viable for production.
You are not going to see the car until about 2015 but you will see the car make production. The question is what will be carried over from the concept car? And some features they are looking at to make them viable , others such as the exposed rear lights are not possible with even possibilities of MINI-surfing behind the car are not being considered as a reason to carry them over... Sadly.
Journalists love it , The Geneva public loved it , MINI's old and new enthusiasts love it and the decision makers @ BMW love the car too.
The questions we are looking at now involve the future of the Rocketman within the MINI brand. And although this is hypothetical and not confirmed it is something we are investigating as we already have one MINI family. Where would the Rocketman fit in with the current family? To which under discussion is the possibility of whether the MINI brand is established and sustainable to support a sub-brand or sub-line for the small MINI?
The ideas behind it is simply that with the Rocketman they have ideas for similar small MINI concepts that are on the drawing board. One of which is a small MINI Urban concept internally termed MINI Caveman- And before you groan about the name, the title is apt due to the "cavernous" space promised by the concept - Think back to the 5dr MINI Spiritual concept for a MINI to showcase space within a small footprint.
What is interesting about the MINI Rocketman is where to take the drivetrain? Again hypothetical but Electric? Is but one possibility... As is the inclusion of a three cylinder in different states of tune or a two cylinder which could be shared with Peugeot-Citroen? Or using a Motorcycle engine from BMW Motorrad which would allow the car , a very unique footprint especially in regards to packaging the interior.
Whether of not the additional small MINI family comes to production relies on the establishment period for the production Rocketman. If so the MINI brand could support smaller MINI's to offset the larger models..
But the Rocketman Concept is the bridge to the next MINI.
For example the next MINI will inherit some of the interface ideas from the Rocketman concept . Such as the MINI tracker-ball to scroll through the MINI's applications. Personalisation will be taken to a next level from what can be done with color and trim to actual light.
With MINI now they are moving towards a line-up that will be completely distinctive with the BMW Compact Car allowing both to co-exist.
