Wow this is superb NEWS.. happy days.. love the G:D
So GANGSTA:D

Sorry guys, I just do not share you excitement about this. I think it is time for the G class to go - if it went now it might at least keep some mystique, but sadly it's now doomed to die a slow and painful death as an out-dated suburban status-symbol for wealthy Americans whose self-esteem just could not allow them to drive a lowly American-built M class.

I understand that Mercedes sees this G class as still a very salable vehicle in the USA, but the thing has been rated as one of the worst polluting vehicles you can buy.

As far as I'm concerned, once again Mercedes-Benz has failed to do the right thing here - it seems, they were unable to produce a halfway decent replacement for a twenty six year old model - you might be celebrating, but I view this as more evidence of the complete shambles at Daimler.

(thank you Stuttgarter, I fixed the error :usa7uh: )

Well maybe Mercedes should never have gotten rid of the W126, which was launched the same year as the G class.

Mercedes needs to replace the G class because it no longer fulfills it's originally intended purpose - it's raison d'être is now as a status-symbol for the supermarket carparks of up-market suburbs - and that is a very sad and superficial end for what was once the world's best off-road vehicle.

This is the reason why the G wagon is still going to be produced. Even with over 20 years on it's neck the car does look extremly good. :eusa_clap

Yeah it sure ass hell do.. looks alot better than most trucks and suvs today.. and its more capable off road.. and it isnt bad on road either.. so there is no damn reason to stop production,,:D

Sorry Artist, I must reiterate - if this is the best off-road vehicle Mercedes-Benz can offer in 2005, then they really have fallen from grace.

You know what.. i think it has better offroad capabilitys than the new ML.. dont you think so.. and by saying that.. it has the better capabilitys offroad than any SUV south of the defender.. ( wich is also a damn old car)

In reviews I've read, the G class does rate well in it's off-road capabilities - as it should. But after 25 years - Mercedes should have something better by now, to replace it.

The G class has gone from being a serious utilitarian off-road vehicle to becoming a fashion object for rappers, gangsters, and Chanel-wearing soccer-moms - and that is just pathetic.

The Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover are superior in many aspects to the G class. For a start, if you've ever been in one, the thing is more like a truck to drive, the windscreen is nearly vertical - which BTW is no longer legal for new vehicle designs, and being so box-like, in high wind it can be quite unstable.

I know why you like it so much because I like it's boxy design too, but in 2005, if you still truly believe Mercedes-Benz to be the world's best car maker, then surely you must admit, the G class is overdue to be replaced - then it can quietly become a classic car, like it deserves to be. Not the Hollywood bling-mobile it is becoming - for Gods sake Artist - even Pam Anderson wants one - with plastic seats no less :eusa_doh: .

LOL i dont care who wants it .. as long as money come to Benz.. may it be hard earned money or drug money.. who the hell cares..

You know when you say that MB should be able to produce a car with better offroad capabilitys than the G wich is 30 years old.. i say.. yes they should.. and most likely the new GL will have em.. cause i read that it should have some ground braking capabilitys..

But you need to understand, not many other brands wich makes suvs today.. except landrover and such have better off road capabilitys than the G.. so if mercedes should have something better after 25 years.. then so should 90% of the SUV makers..
..

You do have a point roberto but the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover have also become favorite mobiles for rapper and non working moms who spend their days buys Prada boots and LV bags. I even saw a documentary where a father bought his 16 years old daughter a white Range Rover 4.8 vouge :eusa_doh:.

On the other hand there are also other cars like the 911 and Ford GT which have kind of looked the same in ages. Speaking of the 911 it has also become a favorite for a specific type of people, the well known 30-40 years old father going through a middle age crisis and what to attract 25 year old girls with their 911 S.

As long as the G wagon, 911 and Ford GT are selling it would be a very stupid business decision to end their products.

I've missed feelings about the G-Class. I see Roberto's point that MB prides itself on innovation and being the best car maker in the world and under that criteria, it's time for the G to be replaced. However, I think the recent G-Class look a bit more modern. The wheel combination looks good on the car so I don't have a problem with it staying.

If the world was not so obsessed with celebrity and overpromoting artists with hardly any talent for whatever it is that they do, they would not be driving around the G-Class as fashion accessories. Since everyone is obsessed with celebrity (how else can an unproven teenage girl with a hyped up golf game instantly make millions in endorsements?), MB might as well keep selling the G. If they stopped selling it to the bling-bling types, perhaps Rolls-Royce should stop quoting engine power figures for the cars and return to calling it adequate.

I wonder how many soccer moms would be driving the G-Class and buying Chanels, LVs, Pradas if the suburban America house they are living in plummets in value. American consumer debt and debt in general are near levels not seen since the depression. People can't keep using their home as an ATM to finance their spending.

:eek2: As far as the Gelandewagen is concerned I'm glad we think along the same terms. While I applauded DaimlerChrysler for finding a small niche of people who will plunk $90,000 for a morbidly outdated vehicle, I must also shun them for creating an abomination which could have lied down in its' death bed instead of tripping on a platinum chain landing it face first. With all this, I've also never really understood the hype of it (physically), to me it resembles a tarted up Isuzu As it should... It wasn't built to please the eyes but for functionality; rightly so, since it was firstly developed to serve as a military vehicle and not for civilians that wanted to shop at The Home Depot. Unfortunately, to me, the Gelandewagens Golden Years are not looking so great.

Since the new GL doesn't seem to be particularly favored here in this forum I'm going to come out and say that I like the new GL. I feel it serves the definition of the modern day SUV even though I don't particularly care for the modern day definition :). Unlike some people I've recognised it as a long-wheel-base ML and not a replacement of what used to be the UN's main form of transportation. I'm certain that it will be great at fast moderate offroading for the moms that will feel insecure in anything else, while being leaps and bounds better in it's manerisms onroad compared to the Gelandewagen. For me personally, retro designing of the new GL would have been a mistake in a line-up that is edgey, modern, or both; Mercedes is not Ford at-the-moment, they can go retro once they finally run out of ideas.

YEAH BABY!! when will it retire then? Nice 30 year retirement party? 40?
They should import the cabrio as well. Bumpy ride :D . My rusted old 1980 230G cabrio it's still going lol.

Oh yeah very classic and stylish! LOL :t-rot: Mine even stinks in the back from going fishing. It even got in the ocean many times (like 20 years ago).
