G-Class Mercedes G-Class Named Classic "Off-Road Vehicle of the Year 2006"

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, colloquially known as the G-Wagon or G-Wagen (as an abbreviation of Geländewagen), is a four-wheel drive luxury SUV manufactured by Magna Steyr (formerly Steyr-Daimler-Puch) in Graz, Styria, Austria, and sold by Mercedes-Benz. Originally developed as a military off-roader, later more luxurious models were added to the line. In certain markets, it was sold under the Puch name as Puch G until 2000.

When speaking of a Mercedes-Benz model, there is none more classic than the G-Class. Its style has remained largely unchanged for the past 27 years, and this fact has caused many to question whether or not Mercedes would even keep producing the beloved SUV.

Mercedes has uncategorically denied this claim, and today they have published yet another press release re-affirming their commitment to the G-Class, while at the same time boasting of the G's latest accomplishment in the land of 4x4's.

It turns out, the G-Class recently received another award, being voted "Off-Road Vehicle of the Year 2006" in the "Classic" category by the readers of Off Road magazine. This marks the third time the Mercedes G-Class has been honored by the publication, and adds to the extensive list of accolades already bestowed upon it, including being voted world's best off-roader thirteen times by readers of the German publication Auto Motor und Sport.

So how does Mercedes feel about the G-Class? Here's what they had to say: "This latest victory reaffirms the model strategy of Mercedes-Benz, which is just as unique as the classic off-roader itself: the G-Class has retained its striking body shape and stable foundations in unchanged form since 1979. At the same time constant evolution has kept the "G" at the technical forefront. Neither is there an end to this success story in sight, as the new special model Grand Edition demonstrates."

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

While competitors change – the "G" remains

Stuttgart, Feb 09, 2006

For the third time the legendary G-Class has been successful in the "Off-Road Vehicle of the Year 2006" vote by readers of the well-known motoring magazine OFF ROAD. The old-stager in the four-wheel drive market was able to triumph over its rivals in the "Classic" category. This latest victory reaffirms the model strategy of Mercedes-Benz, which is just as unique as the classic off-roader itself: the G-Class has retained its striking body shape and stable foundations in unchanged form since 1979. At the same time constant evolution has kept the "G" at the technical forefront. Neither is there an end to this success story in sight, as the new special model Grand Edition demonstrates. Alongside the M-Class and the new GL Class, the G-Class will continue to take its place in the Mercedes-Benz range of highly capable off-roaders.
The readers of the magazine OFF ROAD have voted the legendary progenitor of all Mercedes-Benz off-roaders, which is now entering its 27th year in production, "Off-Road Vehicle of the Year 2006" in the "Classic" category. This latest public accolade makes the G-Class one of the most highly decorated models in the off-road sector, as a glance at the most important worldwide awards will confirm. No less than 13 times, the readers of the motoring magazine "auto, motor und sport" have voted this four-wheel drive vehicle the world’s best off-roader. Following its victory in the 1983 Paris-Dakar Rally, the Australian motoring magazine "bushdriver" proclaimed the G-Class as the best 4x4 off-roader of the year. And in 1995 the readers of the boating magazine "Boote" voted the G-Class the best towing vehicle. In 2003 this successful model was nominated as the "Classic of the future" by the magazine "Motor Klassik".

The classic amongst the Mercedes-Benz off-roaders offers a superior synthesis of highly efficient drive and dynamic handling systems: In addition to permanent four-wheel drive with a reduction gear, the standard features include the electronically controlled traction system 4ETS, the Electronic Stability Program ESP® and three differential locks which can be selected at the touch of a button. Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria has been producing the G-Class on behalf of Mercedes-Benz since 1979; more than 185,000 examples have been produced to date.

Exclusive paint finish for the special model "Grand Edition"

In line with the decision to continue production of this classic off-roader even after 26 years, Mercedes-Benz is introducing the exclusive special model "Grand Edition". Dr. Klaus Maier, the Executive Board member responsible for sales and marketing at Mercedes Car Group: "Our G-Class impressively combines classic off-road vehicle values with the very latest automobile technology. The new special model Grand Edition is an ambassador for the outstanding career of this modern-day classic." Available only with a long wheelbase and V8-engines, the models in this special series are the G 500 with 218 kW (296 hp) and the G 400 CDI with 184 kW (250 hp). All versions are available with the optional special paint finish "allanite grey magno". In contrast to conventional metallic paintwork, a clear topcoat protects the surface and lends an exclusive appearance to the "Grand Edition" models. Additional features include brushed aluminium trim strips with integrated "Grand Edition" lettering. The interior atmosphere is no less exclusive. Specifically for this special series – and in line with the inherent charm of the G-Class – the upholstery is of open-pored, non-embossed natural leather. Other interior features include matte-silk wood trim on the dashboard and centre console, as well as illuminated door sills with "Grand Edition" lettering. The special model is available from March and costs 74,600 Euro (plus 16% VAT).

G class definitely deserved that award!
I don't agree - this award is based purely on perceptions. The fact is, the G class is one of the least economical vehicles in the world and is also one of the most problematic Mercedes models - there are more reliable SUV's than the G class and far more economical vehicles of a comparable size. Admittedly this old truck looks quite cool, it is a classic.

Let's not get carried away by this award though, Americans are so easily aroused by large, expensive, gas-guzzling status symbols - especially if it's got a three-pointed-star on it's front.

I would like to see the car get a total interior makeover becasue right now the whole dash and console does look a little cheap.

The whole thing looks out-of-date Lu.

Shows you how biased the Germans are with their own creations. :)
The Germans are just as blinded by Mercedes past glory as Americans are about the brand's prestige image.

Mercedes has always been a symbol of German engineering excellence - it's more than a brand in Germany, (just ask Christian Wimmer) Mercedes-Benz is a German institution - it must really hurt a lot of Germans to know that Daimler-Benz is no longer a 100% German manufacturer - let's face it, the G class would have been dropped if it wasn't for the American obsession with SUVs

I don't think the American market is the sole reason they've decided to keep it in production for a few more years. They only sell like 900 a year here.

Does anybody have the sales figures for the G class - I would be interested to see how many Daimler sell.
