Kudos to Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai.

It's no secret that earning a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety will boost a car's street cred, and now the engineers at Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz can stand tall knowing that the Genesis and E-Class sedans have just received this prestigious honor.

Hyundai launched its flagship Genesis in 2009, but the automaker made slight changes to the roof structure for the 2010 model year, which has (obviously) greatly improved the crash ratings. Thus, the Top Safety Pick award only applies to Genesis models built after January 2010. The Benz, on the other hand, has been on sale for decades, but this is the first time that the E-Class has garnered IIHS's top rating.

The fact that this is the first time the E-class has recieved this reward is proof that they DO NOT reflect real world situations. MB has obviously engineered this E for both real world and test condition results.

The statistics of MB's being involved in less accidents, less fatalities, injuries etc. in the REAL world is the real proof of their safety credentials.

a hyundai against a merc :) always the merc and the others. and after others then hyundai comes.

One thing I noticed in the two cars, is that the windshield did not crack.

Great showing, wish the cars didn't look so much alike though.

Mercedes is king at safety.

Yeah the overall shape is similar, but everything else is diff, and that actually goes to whole lot of others cars.

MB safety as always.

No, it's praise given to both cars, not a comparison of them.

Some people just can't help themselves.

Kudos to both manufacturers! I guess the E-class doesn't just have the appearance of old-school solid build, it actually is built solid. As for the Genesis, it continues to impress me. Hyundai have done a stellar job so far.

:eusa_clap

When I had a summer job at MB Munich in their mail department, I saw countless letters from owners who had written MB to tell them how happy they were with their MB product because it had saved their life in a serious accident.

Most of the letters were from W210 E-Class owners. :usa7uh:

It's one of my favorite Mercedes-Benzes, in particular as wagon/Estate. ;)

Did remember a previous report by the IIHS and found it after some googling:

Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the safest car in the USA

April 14, 2005 9:06 am, Press Release

New US study

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers the best occupant safety of all passengers cars registered in the USA. That was the conclusion reached by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) after extensive accident analysis.

Between 2000 and 2003, the independent IIHS looked at how many drivers were killed in road accidents. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class obtained the best results of all the models examined: the E-Class accounts for ten fatal accidents a year for every million vehicles registered. The comparable average figure for all passenger cars is almost nine times higher than the E-Class; the figure for certain models is even over 300, according to the IIHS.

The results from the Mercedes-Benz S-Class are equally impressive. With a score of 25, the S-Class is the safest car in the “Luxury Class, very large” category.

These findings are again impressive testimony to the effectiveness of the practical Mercedes-Benz safety concept. The concept is based on analysing real-world accidents and defines vehicle safety as a whole, ranging from accident prevention by means of electronic assistance systems through occupant protection that adapts to the severity of the impact, to allowing passengers to be rescued as quickly as possible after an accident.
