We spoke to Mercedes design boss Peter Pfeiffer at the recent Detroit Motor Show – and asked him about the future strategy at the Stuttgart company.

What’s the point of the Ocean Drive concept?
We had a discussion last year about the current Mercedes-Benz line-up. Mercedes has a very strict design and the idea came up to do a forward-looking car. The Ocean Drive is not looking back into the history books at all; we wanted to create a dream.

Some say it looks like a Maybach…
It was always going to be a Mercedes – not a Maybach.

Will you build it?
We are going to make a decision whether to build the Ocean Drive or not in the next two to four weeks.

That roof looks engineered for production?
Yes, it does, doesn’t it…

Hmm. So which bits of the Ocean Drive are most significant?
The grille is big – and very three-dimensional. You’ll see this on the new C-class and other future models. Look also at the taut lines and surfaces; the subtle surfaces along the flanks are important, too. The subtle lines continue through the rear lights.

Note also the small strip of chrome running along the flank of the car; we are considering this for production. The two-tone paint on the Ocean Drive will happen. It’s more complicated to produce – it has to go through the paintshop twice.

Sounds like a facelifted S-class to me…
I can’t comment on that.

And what about those LED headlights?
LED headlight systems will be here in the next two to three years; they give us designers more scope to do exciting things at the front.

How would you sum up the new C-class unveiled last week?
The new C-class is both sporty and regal at the same time. We have different design languages for different ranges; our sports cars are different to our saloons – but there’s an overall language binding them all together.

Designing a new C-class must be really easy. You just draw a mini S-class, don’t you?
When you look at the S-class today, there is quite a bit of that in the new C-class. But it has its own character, too.

Which is your most important model in recent years in design terms?
Our new look started with the CLS. It was a big change, a revolutionary step for us.

There’ve been so many new models in recent years… How do you design so many?
A new addition must always look like a Mercedes. Any new model must slot into our range and carve out its own identity – but it must also be a member of the family.

I noticed the C class has a similar grille to the ODC -- we first saw hints of this bolder, larger grille with the face-lifted E class. I guess it does give the vehicle more presence.

Thats true and I like the larger grille, but it could be a little less pointy at the bottom. I saw a E550 Sport just yesterday, the FL really looks good.

With all due respect, you've failed.

Peter Pfeiffer - liar. :D;)

This could be...coincidence. :t-hands:

Also, who are you going to believe here? Pfeiffer, who runs the design show at Mercedes, or Rob, who has a great imagination. :D

I'm not saying Rob is wrong, but Pfeiffer is the guy running the design studios at Mercedes and if there was a person to know the truth, it's him.

But yeah, he could still be lying. :eusa_danc

Interesting there about the LED lights..
I belive they will debut for mercedes on the new SL.. and they will do so in a spectacular manner

PS
Other than that i felt that the interviewer was stupid.. he asked kinda rude and pointless questions..
its sad that ppl like this get the chance to talk to such influental ppl
they should let somoene from GCF do an interview..
now that would be informative and gr8

I would urge you to see the Ocean Drive in the flesh before making a categorical statement such as this--if you already have seen it, then you are entitled to your opinion and i respect that.

I saw the OD here in Detroit and I must say the pictures do not do it justice at all. It is a lot more cohesive as an automobile than it looks. I am amazed at how they made an S-class cabriolet look that well-proportioned. The car did indeed look like a dream. On the other hand, the soft top is a point of contention with me. If the latest 3 series cab has one, then such a high end mercedes should not even discuss the certain necessity for it.

Well, I'm not going to say Pfeiffer is lying ...because he almost certainly is not.

I think he is probably referring to the design principles Mercedes has historically adhered to rather than the styling -- because there are a number of styling cues on the ODC that look quite Retro. But it certainly is true that the ODC was conceived from a very different perspective than anything by Sacco or Bracq in the past.

It still seems to me only logical that the design team would have looked back to the Adenauer, being the last 4-door cabriolet Mercedes built, to make some kind of connection with it.

I could quite easily envisage a car closely based on the Ocean Drive concept being released in the forseeable future. Perhaps as the intermittently heralded Maybach 53 ? Perhaps as a 4 door CLS-like coupe as opposed to the Ocean Drives´ 4 door convertible configuration ?

Hmmm...

A traditional fabric-topped convertible version of the C216 CL would be enticing, methinks...
