Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

Latest news, trending discussions, reviews, and major updates
Interesting. It should actually have been released in 2020, and now be nearing the end of its cycle, not to be replaced by a successor.

A shame how all this went. I don't even think it's entirely the fault of MB here. Taking so long for a new car to release kind of is their fault tho. They must have a good look and find ways to be quicker without neglecting quality. It's the only way to stay relevant in the EV space when competing with the Chinese tech.

I have this feeling you might be right with the DOA part. If the Taycan didn't make it, this Benz sure as hell won't either.

Just a bit of R&D? Just a bit would basically mean starting all over from scratch. This EV only platform likely doesn't even have a tunnel for a driveline.
Listen, I love your V8 enthusiasm as much as the next guy, but we've got to keep it real.
Usually it takes 3yrs to develop a car.

2023 release and phasing it out in 2027 without a successor would have been probably the case here.

You nailed everything else. (y)

With high end Mythos and Black Series incoming.. all Mercedes dealers have to do is pretend it's a Porsche dealer and ask customers to buy GT4dr EVs to receive allocations.
This might actually happen in Europe, because the ridiculous CO2 limits are a big problem for them.

I expect the #2 to fill these shoes.

They could build it with matching colors and interiors.

Why don’t they try saving saving it by spending just a bit of R&D by putting that New V8 in there ? This car is not gonna make it.

If the Taycan Turbo GT failed, this car also doesn’t got a shot. Especially if a 1500hp EV Xiaomi is $80k🤷‍♂️

This doesn’t work so easy. But it could be done as with the Fiat 500 hybrid.

Compared to BMW, Mercedes Benz developed a AMG EV only platform.

If the new GT 4D would be based on the multiple platform like the 7er platform it’d be no problem.

But the AMG EV is a EV only platform.

Even the die hard Mercedes Benz fans must admit, that the BMW approach was superior .

Uh BMW didn’t try to compete at this level with Porsche, Audi and Mercedes with their dedicated performance EVs. There is no comparable BMW. And BMW is now doing EV only platforms like with the i3/iX3. Not as clear cut as you’re saying. The 5-series and 7-series EVs are not the best EVs going either. Mercedes biggest goof was making the EQ cars look like something other than a Mercedes.

Or the 983 Porsche platform. Designed as EV-only from the getgo, but since the batteries were stacked behind the driver seat to give it the Mid-engine weight balance/feel, they have the space needed to re-engineer for ICE.

Maybe in other countries but not the US, finding an MSRP-allocation for a GT3 or other specialty 911 if you don't already have a relationship with a dealer is still very, very difficult.

Yeah everywhere.
I am thinking about the rest of their terrible line-up. The 911 is what keeps them going from an enthusiastic point of view.

This was a pure stroke of luck indeed. Re-engineering a BEV platform to a RWD front engined ICE car is way more complicated I bet.

major changes for the 983:

Structural Re-Engineering
  • Chassis Rigidity: The original EV design used a load-bearing battery pack as the structural backbone of the car. To support an engine, engineers are developing a new structural floor section that bolts into existing hard points to restore the rigidity lost when the battery is removed.

  • Revised Rear Section: Because the architecture was never intended for a petrol engine, a completely redesigned rear bulkhead and subframe are being developed to support the weight and vibration of a mid-mounted engine and transmission.
Packaging Challenges
  • Fuel & Exhaust: The EV-native platform has no central tunnel or provision for fuel tanks, fuel lines, or exhaust plumbing.
  • Mid-Engine Placement: Engineers must find space for a four- or six-cylinder engine within a space originally designed for compact electric motors and power electronics.

Tough job. It's like fixing an old building instead of tearing it down and starting all fresh.

Yeah everywhere.

Yup and their largest profit margins are on the 911 too! Almost Ferrari-level of profit for the 911.

Though how long can they truly ride this wave?

I guess Porsche sees this too, hence why they are """"changing"""" things up by offering a GT3 Sport Cabrio, switching the 3RS to a twin-turbo, bringing a manual 911 Turbo "Touring?" etc to keep interest at an all time high.

Yeah I don't think the AMG EV is possible to be re-engineered into an ICE at all.

That being said, I see people saying the GT 4-door has been a success but has it? I know dealers offer pretty big discounts here to sell them. I'd rather see the GT 4-door be discontinued and make way for an ICE E63 instead. I understand that's likely a hot take in this crowd LOL

I feel like Mercedes should’ve designed the W223 & GT EV as both EV & ICE.

A fully EV W223 would’ve worked better than EQS.
A V8 in the upcoming GT 4-door would work too.

Leylandi's ban is temporary. Effectively he has to wait for his two oldest warning points to expire before he can come back. If we had cause to believe Dopebouy was an alternate account of Leylandi, that would be unfortunate for Dopebouy as it would likely mean a perma ban with no warning for both accounts.

In the mean time @Dopebouy just follow the rules and behave, and to everyone else here that wants to make him or Leylandi the topic of discussion, don't - it causes more **** than it solves. The thread is for what's coming next from Mercedes, not which members people do or don't like.

FWIW...I always appreciate @leylandi's as well as @Jonathan19's automotive "scoops" featuring prototype video footage and photo images. Always interesting, constructive content IMHO.
