Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

@Sunny - Elon’s coffers still must be generous in the Bay Area ;)
Haha yea, he is public enemy #1 around here these days.

For a brand that’s still very much driven by ICE sales revenue; this a conservative approach to test ROI.
As GM’s EV offensive attempt is proving - many automotive consumers are just not ready or interested at this point of time for conversion to EVs, with the tradeoffs vs ICE.

I think that might be a more of a reflection of GM and Mary Barra than anything else. BEVs did damn well in 22. I don't know the latest figures, but in H1 they grew 60+% globally while the rest of the automotive market shrank 8%.

If it was 2018, I get being conservative with EVs, but I think at this point, if you are going to be conservative for another decade, you will be dead in the water by the end of it. Just my take.

Eh? The Bolt lineup is failing obviously, but their "EV offensive" is the upcoming Equinox, Blazer, and Silverado which we are yet to see how they do.. and they have a ton of preorders for the Silverado already.

Agree. You can’t time the market. Development of EVs is lenghty and yours first 1-2 models will likely be flawed. Therefore you need to allow yourself 5-8 years of transition.

There are rumours that the next generation W224 S-class will be electric only. If these rumours are true, then good luck to Mercedes.

That rumour is true for 80% of models across car brands. However some manufacturer will keep 1-2 ICE models in productions for a few years beyond 2030.

Hopefully battery density will have improved massively by then and we'll see a 250 kWh powered S-class with MCS charging capacity. Imagine that? Long range and short charging times. Would be a dream come true. Provided of course that said EV S-class doesn't grow to 6 metres. That's why I emphasised the need for battery density to improve. If we can extract 600 hp out of a two litre turbo engine these days, then hopefully engineers will be able to cram a powerful battery into a 3 metre long wheelbase.

By the time the ICE S-class is retired in 7-8 years, battery density and efficiency of electric motors + recuperation will have drastically improved - Not to mention wider access to fast charging.

For developing markets, I believe that a hybrid E-Class or front wheel drive Mercedes sedan will be available beyond 2030. The latter could even be Renault based!

I can't see this happening. They are already extremely efficient. The future belongs to charging speed. When you are able to fully charge the battery for 5 min you don't need a bigger range. Also density is not that important, more important is the price of the battery.

My biggest problem with BEVs is the recharging time. Time for the industry to work on ultra fast charging.

AMG GT leaked. This is thought to be the I4 entry model (analgous to SL43).

I assume that means no more new models will receive the designation, rather than them just dropping it completely part way through the life cycle.

So... Goodbye EQS, EQS SUV, EQE, EQE SUV and I presume that EQC will become GLC number and an "e" next to the number. Same for the GLA and GLB.

Right.

Excellent news for the douchebag customer who is very proud of his 2023 EQS 580 4Matic SUV.

They’re not dropping it immediately, just no next gen EQ. The electric CLA will be the first electric MB without the branding.

EQE and EQS will be updated in 2024. (new battery and new electric motors developed by mercedes)

By the end of 2024, the first electric model without the EQ brand will go on sale. A compact sedan in the form of the CLA. (MMA platform)

Electric variants of the C-class and GLC will be introduced in 2025 (MB.EA platform)

By the end of 2025, the first sports car with the AMG.EA platform will be presented.

In 2027-2028, the electric S-class with MB.EA-L platform will be offered.

The last new model to be released with the ICE platform will be the W214.

Yup, so basically the EQ turds will die this generation, with EV versions of the C, E and S replacing them.

Makes sense.
