Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

Why not just do all that under Smart? U-Class sounds terrible and no wants to think about what U used to mean from 1937-1945. Making Smart all electric with the right battery tech would be a boon, but toy like Mercedes is not the answer.

So what do we have coming in the next 12 months: GLE53, GLE63, A35/A45 Sedan, A45 Hatch, CLA/CLA35/45, GLB, CLA SB and the GLS. I'm seeing on other sites that a AMG GT with the I6 from the "53" models has allegedly been spotted and also that AMG GT R Roadster is coming. AMG GT Black Series also. E-Class, GLC facelifts in 2019.

A new report from Automobile Magazine suggestsDaimler could axe Smart entirely because Renault is not willing to continue its partnership with the brand. Currently, the two companies share a common platform for the Twingo/ForFour city cars, but once the duo reaches the end of its cycle the French automaker is going to pull out of the project.
Please let this we true. The Smart brand is no longer relevant. The cars are nothing but overpriced and reskinned Twingos.

Man can only wonder how stubborn the Daimler management is when it comes to Smart. This project should had been terminated at least 2 decades ago.
I'll be surprised if folding Smart will be the first major decision taken by Dieter Zetsche's replacement.

I get why people want to see Smart gone, but if that means a tiny toy Mercedes, then they should keep Smart and actually make them Smarts into something. All electric would be brilliant if they had the right range/price. A Mercedes smaller than the A-Class makes me want to vomit.

Taking the Mercedes dealership experience and shrinking in down a bit.

A couple of weeks ago for the very first time, Mercedes-Benz held a pop-up dealership inside the King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania. Instead of seeing actual cars inside the pop-up, there was a little twist. If the “Lil Benz Dealership” sign didn’t already give it away, the concept was simple. If mom and dad are able to drive Mercs, why can’t the kids too? So Mercedes dedicated one whole day for little ones to get the full dealership experience. Pretty neat, right?

Just like real adult dealerships, the children had a chance to test drive an assortment of models. From the CLA 45 AMG, SLS AMG, to the G-Wagen, there was a whole lineup ready for kiddos to take for a spin, no license required. Each walk-in customer that came in for a test drive received an owner’s manual that also doubles as a coloring book. And to top off the Mercedes dealership experience, each child got their own Lil’ Driver’s License with photo and all.

The little Mercs may be made of hard plastic, but the cars look just as good as the real deal. Numerous features come with the cars like working headlights, a horn, push-button start, all the buttons to keep your child entertained for hours. Don’t let the bi-turbo side badges fool you, the top speed of 3.5 mph won’t blow you away.

If any of the kids fell in love with the cars, they’re actually available to order online, much easier than ordering the real-life counterparts. And those that came in received discount codes to purchase the vehicles as well. Talk about amazing customer service.

CLA is now deck. It's now time for the AMG models to be rolled out: A35 Sedan, A45 Hatch and the GLE53. Hopefully at Geneva in March or NYC in April, along with the new GLS. The hardcore GLE63 and CLA45 and A45 Sedans will likely be shown in the fall at Frankfurt.

Well, it looks like the next generation of core passenger car lineup will remain largely similar in style.

The chief designer of Mercedes-Benz says that the current strong aesthetic similarities between the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class will be carried forward into the next-generation of vehicles despite some calls that the three model lines look too similar to the untrained eye.

“We will always make sure these three limos speak one language,” said the brand’s design boss Gordon Wagner.

“The brand identity is more important than the product identity, still they are different with subtle things – DRLs and so on – and of course even from proportions the S-Class has much more gravity and so on. Still, many differentiations but also many similarities, so its still the Mercedes pick in each segment.”

According to Wagner, the idea isn’t for the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class to compete with each other, the idea is that each of those cars presents the Mercedes-Benz pick in that segment, so that a buyer with a certain budget would pick the car that suits them, so long as its a Mercedes.

“So the enemy is the competition, it’s not us, if they buy a car from us it doesn’t matter [which one]. They must not buy competitor cars so we want to make sure the luxury pick in every segment is a Mercedes, so they speak the same language first of all.”

The previous-generations of each of those three vehicles varied considerably more than the current models, a fact that Wagner says he has helped correct which has led to far better sales.

“We are coming from complete diversity before, every car was looking completely different and sometimes not appealing, so first task was to bring it into family resemblance. Our success shows that we were right, we were not even the premium company maybe ten years ago, now we are the leading luxury company [thanks to the new designs],” Wagner said.

The next-generation S-Class will soon kick off yet another evolution of the brand’s design language, but it’s unlikely that it will be a revolutionary change from what we are seeing today.

“The update with the new S-Class that is coming out soon, we will update the whole line up and again its one complete generation so we will facelift the E-Class and bring in a new C-Class as well so we will see the steps of generation as well,” Wagner added.

Well I guess you can't argue with the sales numbers, so I see why they feel that way. Long as the "same language" is good looking I'm ok with it, but that is where the similarity should stop. Other Mercedes models should be more adventurous in design, but still look like a Benz imo.

I am fine with them sharing the same design language, but more differentiation is needed, things like front and rear bumper design, headlight graphics, wheel design, steering wheel design.

I've no problem with this same design language motto. But for me the front design/fascia of the new A and new CLS are too close for comfort.

You know the blockbuster show this year will Frankfurt. All the Germans will have big premiers. I can't wait. Geneva is just the warm up.

According to Georg Kacher, the S-Coupe and S-Cabrio won't have a successor based on the W223.

While a 4dr coupe was considered (it seems like it was really beautiful) it has finally got the axe as well.

So the W223 range will only include the S-Class and the Maybach.
