X-ray vision for crash tests
17C297_01.jpg

  • X-ray technology in crash testing renders deformation processes visible inside components as well
  • Our aim: to improve the forecasting quality of vehicle crash simulations
Stuttgart. Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institut, EMI from Freiburg, the Vehicle Safety unit at Daimler AG is trialling the application of x‑r ay technology in crash tests for the first time at the i‑protect Tech Center. Ultra-fast x‑ray technology produces still images of defined areas in razor-sharp quality during a test crash. A new development here is that it is even possible in principle to look inside safety-relevant components in order to assess their behaviour. An additional bonus is that the data from the x‑ray crash can be combined with computer-based simulation models. This synthesis can help to further improve the reliability of crash simulations in forecasting the effects of real‑life crashes.

The interdisciplinary teams are also active within the i‑protect Tech Center in the area of alternative restraint concepts – specifically with regard to the highly automated nature of driving in the future. The fields of science and practical application are jointly investigating which new approaches in the areas of interior monitoring and occupant classification are of relevance in helping to improve passive safety.

In the virtual world, muscle-controlled movements mark a major step towards active use of the digital human body model in place of the dummy in the development of new preventive protection concepts.

i-protect Tech Center – networking at international level

The next item on the agenda entails stepping up the research association's networking at international level. Since the i‑p rotect Tech Center was established on 21 January 2016, Daimler AG has been pursuing work within this cooperation platform on sustainable solutions relating to integral safety for the mobility of the future. The partners are Robert Bosch GmbH, the University of Stuttgart, the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM) and the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, Ernst-Mach-Institut, EMI Freiburg, the Technical University of Dresden, the Technical University of Graz and the Klinikum Stuttgart.

A further speculation from Motor Authority of axing more models in future, S-Coupe / Cabrio included(n) as they have a notion the next SL will fulfill their role..just hope this is speculation after all..

Report : Mercedes to axe SLC

Mercedes-Benz boss Dieter Zetsche revealed to media during last month’s 2017 Geneva auto show that the automaker would be pruning back the number of specialty cars it currently offers, namely coupe and convertibles.

Zetsche said Mercedes would continue to offer multiple specialty cars but not the number available today. Recall, the automaker has six convertibles in its lineup, a body style that performs poorly.

According to a report out from Automobile, sitting at the top spot on the list of cars to be axed is the SLC (formerly the SLK). Sales in the United States average a little more than 300 a month so the car will hardly be missed.

Mercedes is working on a modular platform dubbed the MSA that will underpin next-generation versions of the SL and Mercedes-AMG GT, with development of the new platform and the cars spawned from it is being handled by AMG. The platform will likely prove too pricey for a slow-selling sports car starting at $50K.

Automobile also suspects that the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet might be axed. This is due to the next SL evolving into a larger, more luxurious grand tourer with 2+2 seating and a soft-top roof—positioning currently filled by the S-Class Coupe. The move is to help further separate the next SL from AMG’s next GT which will maintain a similar formula to the current model.

I remember that a member of the forum got roasted for posting that MB is going to kill the S-Coupé and Cabriolet a couple of months ago.
Well...;)

I don't think it is; both BMW and MB are going to reduce the line up. And having both S coupe, S cabrio and SL is overkill, either way.

And also, MB should partner up for a new SLC, to reduce costs. Like BMW did with Toyota for the next Z4. Without Toyota, there would not have been a new Z4 either.

Hit as many disagree or dislike buttons as you want but S class coupe two door is not happening from what I've heard.

It is sad to hear about this but at the same time it is kind off understandable because these models are getting lower and lower in volume sales so as a business case it isn't really feasable, but strictly from an MB enthusiasts pov it is saddening though..

It would also be interesting then to see if these rumours are true of the next SL filling in the Luxury GT space and the AMG GT being a Sports Roadster..

I don't think so. When the next gen legendary SL arrives without failed design, the AMG GT will be completely pointless. So pointless that they will not make a new one.

Yes but then which model will fill the void of a flagship Luxury GT, I'm assuming MB would want to retain some sort of a holding in this segment since they simply cannot dissappear from it. I reckon MB would follow the same formula for the SL as being a sports Luxury Roadster and just increase the Luxury element a notch..

They should just make a fixed roof version of the next gen SL, and they'll have their luxury coupe.

^ something along those lines..plus I find it quite ironic that BMW is readying a 9er Coupe and Mercedes on the other hand is pulling out of this segment lol..strange.

And I think that's going to happen. A new, better designed worthy SL cabrio. On basis of this SL a coupe is going to be made to replace the current S coupe. Just like the days of R107/C107.

AMG GT will exist at least for two more generations but with major design overhaul based on the MFA platform.

How in the world is having an S Coupe/Cabrio and SL too much? One is a 2 seater and the other a 4 seater. Nonsense that they can't both be sold together. The SL just needs a pretty design. The AMG GT on the MFA platform? Is that a joke?

Mercedes-Benz is about to make a number of major changes to its product portfolio, some of which were first publicized by Automobile Magazine’s Georg Kacher. We spoke to our own sources in Stuttgart, and here’s what we can report.

MFA Platform: Only three models using Daimler’s modular front-wheel-drive platform are offered in the United States right now: the CLA-, GLA-, and B-class, the latter only in electric form. There will be more vehicles sold here spun from the next generation of the architecture, including a sleek A-class sedan, previewed earlier this month by a concept at the Shanghai auto show, and a compact off-roader tentatively called the GLB. Other markets also currently get an A-class hatch and a CLA Shooting Brake, while the long-wheelbase A-class sedan is exclusive to China. The next CLA will get a smooth, muscular shoulder line like the four-door AMG GT.

AMG GT: Speaking of the AMG GT, the coupe range will be topped by a Black Series model, but the big news will be the four-door GT, which was just shown as a concept (pictured above) and will reach production around 2019. Despite its high-voltage looks and its badging, it is actually based on the E-class platform; its interior will mix E-class and GT elements. Below the range-topping twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, there may also be a six-cylinder twin-turbo gasoline engine, a six-cylinder turbo-diesel, and a six-cylinder hybrid.

C-class, E-class, and S-class: These recently launched (or, in the case of the S-class, facelifted) models will remain on the market for a while, but they will successively be fitted with new engines, including inline-sixes. Forty-eight-volt electronic architecture plays an increasing role, while the interiors will make a leap forward in the next generation. The S-class coupe and cabriolet will not join that generation, however, and will be discontinued.

Say goodbye to the SLK SLC-class.
G-class: After four decades in production, the G-wagen will be supplanted by a new model that looks almost exactly like the outgoing one but about four inches wider and featuring an entirely reimagined, more modern interior. The old model won’t go away entirely but will continue to be produced for certain markets alongside the new one. We suspect that it will be dropped in the U.S. market, however.

GLC-class: The immensely successful, relatively compact GLC will remain in production for several years, having just received the full AMG treatment.

GLE- and GLS-class: The next-gen GLE and its coupe derivative will look far more bold and sporty than the current models; they will have significantly more stylish interiors as well. The next GLS will continue its fight with U.S.-brand premium SUVs and the Range Rover, with the lineup topped by a Maybach version.

SLC-class: An instant hit when it was introduced as the SLK-class in the 1990s, there will be no successor for this small retractable-hardtop roadster.

SL-class: The next generation of this long-running roadster will gain two small rear seats and a fabric top as it transitions to a two-plus-two to differentiate it from the AMG GT roadster.

What’s Next for Mercedes-Benz: A Brief Look at Future Products

Its sad that Mercedes never really pulled off the compact Roadster properly since all three generations as it would have been a cracking experience driving a compact Mercedes Roadster which handled like a Porsche, I've always wondered what that would feel like:eusa_thinbut I guess we will never see now..
