Polar opposite philosophies. Both can be right for different audiences!

If you have mainly owned shit boxes and finally earn enough to buy your rust brand new car, the class interior gives you the “I have made it do the middle class” feeling. Or you simply love screens and ambient lighting.

The VW is more for those who have owned several cars, brand and new. Just want things to work and don’t need the car to validate their worth at all or self esteem boost.

I really like that new retro gauge cluster graphics on the ID3, looks so lovely, though it would’ve been much better if that retro look was carried to the exterior styling as well. I guess that’s where the new ID Polo will shine.

i can’t wait till more car manufacturers combine the Gauge cluster, Center console & Passenger screen all into 1 screen just so they can call it “The Future”😂

That has tradtionally been the allure of the Volkswagen brand. The perception of the products being "Klassenlos". Automobiles that always present their owners in a more subtle, sustainable "appropriately dressed" manner. Substance over show. A "Kitsch-Free Zone".

How much shares do the Chinese exactly have in Mercedes? Can’t Mercedes buy them out?

i think the China ship has sailed, they are never getting that market back.

Between BAIC and Geely they own 19.70% of the shares, which is a lot (I don't think any other shareholder has more).

Now that you mention it, it's curious that having two of the most successful Chinese companies in China as major shareholders, they haven't been able to reverse or stabilize the situation in that country.

It’s easy. They sell you a Mercedes EV for cheaper & better tech.

Who is gonna buy the CLA if there is a car exactly like that for cheaper?

So in a way, Mercedes is not benefiting from all this.

Can’t Mercedes buy them out?

Not really. The Chinese hold around 180 million shares of the company, roughly speaking at today's rate that would cost the company 9-10 Billion Euros if they could do it (that's two years profit wiped out), which I don't believe is permitted even they had the money, and doing it in stages would incrementally drive up the share price costing them even more money as they went along. On top of that, the buy back would need to pass the board, which the Chinese also have a vote on.

Mercedes is doing a buy back of free float shares at the moment, but they're only doing 2 billion's worth over 3 years IIRC, which IIRC is similar to the level BMW were/are doing, so that's probably the most that's either feasible, or permitted.

C-Class EV up next. Monday.

Still waiting to see: the S63, Maybach GLS, GLE and GLS AMG models.

M

Awaiting the presentation of the C-Class EQ sedan with eager anticipation. I have a hunch that I am going to like it alot more than the GLC EQ.

Also, the AMG.EA 4 door GT EV cannot come soon enough. And I'll be looking forward to more, less heavily camo'd prototype images of the future E-Class EQ sedan. That could turn out really well, I suspect.
