Hot! Mercedes-Benz, What's Next?

This should be called the "CLS" if MB follow their new nomenclature. Might be confusing.
I did read somewhere that with the introduction of the CLE class; the CLS goes more upscale? In my opinion; this is what the new S coupe should be called since it would now align with their nomenclature. However; it will be tough since the current CLS is nothing more than an E in a fancier suit

MUNICH (Bloomberg) -- Mercedes-Benz offers the S-class sedan with a growing range of options such as carbon-fiber trim, heated and cooled cupholders and four types of caps for the tire valves, and the carmaker's robots simply can't keep up.

With customization key to wooing modern consumers, the flexibility and dexterity of human workers is ensuring their dominance once again on Mercedes's assembly lines.

"Robots can't deal with the degree of individualization and the many variants that we have today, Markus Schaefer, the German automaker's head of production, said at its factory in Sindelfingen, Germany, the anchor of the Daimler unit's global manufacturing network.

"We're saving money and safeguarding our future by employing more people."

The Sindelfingen plant, the manufacturer's biggest, is an unlikely place to question the benefits of automation. The factory makes elite models such as the ultraluxury S-class Maybach sedan but the 101-year-old site is far from a boutique assembly shop.

The complex processes 1,500 tons of steel a day and produces more than 400,000 vehicles a year. That makes efficient, streamlined production as important at Sindelfingen as at any other automotive plant. But the age of individualization is forcing changes to the manufacturing methods that made cars and other goods accessible to the masses.

The impetus for the shift is versatility. While robots are good at reliably and repeatedly performing defined tasks, they're not good at adapting. That's increasingly in demand amid a broader offering of models, each with more and more features.

"The variety is too much to take on for the machines," said Schaefer, who is pushing to reduce the hours needed to produce a car to 30 from 61 in 2005. "They can't work with all the different options and keep pace with changes," he said.

With manufacturing focused around a skilled crew of workers, Mercedes can shift a production line in a weekend instead of the weeks needed in the past to reprogram robots and shift assembly patterns, Schaefer said. During that downtime, production would be at a standstill.

'Robot farming'

The revamped Mercedes E class, which goes on sale in March, is an example of cutting back on machines. To align the car's head-up display, which projects speed and navigation instructions onto the windshield, the carmaker will replace two permanently installed robots with either one movable, lightweight machine or a worker.

While robots won't completely disappear, they'll increasingly be smaller and more flexible and operate in conjunction with human workers rather than set off behind safety fences. Mercedes calls equipping workers with an array of little machines "robot farming."

Mercedes isn't doing this in isolation. Rivals BMW Group and Audi are also testing lightweight, sensor-equipped robots safe enough to work alongside people. The edge they're seeking is to be better and faster than rivals as the pace of change affecting the auto industry quickens. Cars are increasingly morphing into smartphones on wheels, and manufacturers are under pressure to upgrade their models more frequently than the traditional seven-year cycle.

Automakers also need to cater to consumers demanding to be different. For Mercedes, that means adding 30 models by the end of the decade, including 10 all-new styles, and offering custom options such as bamboo trim, interior fragrances and illuminating the Mercedes star.

That's a stark contrast to the days when mass-production pioneer Henry Ford quipped that customers could have any color they wanted as long as it was black.

"We're moving away from trying to maximize automation with people taking a bigger part in industrial processes again," said Schaefer. "We need to be flexible."

Do they hold the media night on their stand or is it in a hall somewhere else ?? It's a bit different at Geneva compared to IAA since they don't have their own building.

100 years of BMW: Congratulations from Stuttgart to Munich - Free admission to the Mercedes-Benz Museum for BMW employees

The Mercedes-Benz Museum is congratulating BMW on its hundred-year anniversary with an invitation: from 8 to 13 March 2016 employees of Bayerische Motorenwerke (BMW), which was founded on 7 March 1916, will enjoy free admission to the museum in Stuttgart. Those arriving in a BMW will be allowed to park free of charging in a prominent position directly outside the entrance on the hill. The restaurant will additionally serve up a special Swabian speciality for the first 50 BMW employees at the end of their tour of 130 years of automotive history.

I guess the GLC Coupe, regular GLC43 and likely the LWB E-Class at Bejing? I'm hoping for the E43 at NYC.

M

^ Could be. The GLC 43 Coupe could have only the standard 362 hp, though. MB might have reconsidered and reserved the boost for the E43 only. :)

Tobias Moers confirmed AMG will add another 10 newcomers to the AMG brand taking the portfolio to 48 cars!

The thing is though, all those won't be true, hand-built engine AMG models. That explosion of new AMG models is mainly what would have been "AMG Sport" models. The true AMGs coming are the E63 and C63 Cabrio and maybe a GLC63/CLC63 Coupe, the rest will be GLC43/GLC43 Coupe, E43, etc. I'm all for adding more performance models under AMG, but under the AMG SPORT banner, not just AMG. These "43" cars are just WRONG and not true AMGs. A new member of the GT family (!) I can't wait to see that, 600hp please.

M

To be fair, it doesn't needs to be heavily powered..What the car precisely needs to do is set the benchmark in driving dynamics. Hopefully the reworked chassis with the rear wheel steer and active aero's will just do that.

I agree, and another true AMG I'm looking forward to is the dedicated sedan they're supposed to be doing, the GT4 or something like that. Where that leave the next CLS/CLE I dunno.

AMG plotting hardcore hybrids

If you thought hybrids were only for tree-hugging hippies, think again. Mercedes-AMG is working on a number of new hybrid powertrain and platform solutions to ensure its new-generation of tyre-frying bahn-stormers can meet emissions regulations.

Influential CEO of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers, told motoring.com.au he was amped about the future of hybrid and electric performance cars.

Moers revealed the existence of a fast-moving project within Mercedes-AMG whose directive is to develop the next generation of flagship performance cars, a project that includes “Formula One guys”.

The hands-on AMG boss conceded it would mean V8-powered vehicles like the AMG C 63 and AMG GT (or their successors) would be heavier, by virtue of adding electric motors and battery packs, but that they’ll also be faster.

Much, much faster!

“As an engineer I’m excited by it. Because I know this is going to help us to increase power output. To give us better straight-line performance. But you always have to take care that it should be balanced regarding the overall dynamics of the car,” Moers told motoring.com.au.

Moers argues that AMG vehicles have to retain racetrack capability but that “weight is still an issue with hybridisation and electrification”.

But as ever-stricter emissions regulations force the hands of car makers all over the world, new solutions are required.

It’s not yet clear how the Affalterbach company will employ hybrid tech in its vehicles, but the AMG chief says his company does not have its head in the sand when balancing performance and environmental respect.

“We are not able to shut our eyes for future demands so we work on electrification, hybridisation, and this is the bigger task for us, because we have three different layouts in place, east-west [A45 etc], GT [FR with transaxle] and C 63 [FR]. All different platforms and layouts,” he explained.

The Mercedes-AMG chief hinted that the company was considering merging platforms to reduce development costs and complexity, the results of which could be very exciting.

“Maybe we combine layouts? We have gained something in the last few months,” he revealed, “but it’s not research, it’s kind of like a combined team of a few people in a think tank talking with suppliers, what they’re able to do, involvement of HPP, high performance powertrain, Formula one guys as well in that project.”

With that in mind, might we see a KERS-style ‘boost’ mode in future AMGs whereby drivers can press a button or flick a switch for added powertrain performance increases for short periods of time, useful on race tracks with long straights?

“It’s a fast moving project,” he enthused but said production realities of the go-fast technology wouldn’t be revealed for a few years.

“There’s no need for it now, the next one or two years. But for 2020? Sure.”

“When you have some hardware that you can use in cars to drive development [it’s exciting], but it’s nothing we can talk in detail about yet,” Moers said.

Waiting for that C63 Cabrio, E43 (hopefully with 400hp), GLC Coupe and the GLC43 models. AMG GT R in June. What is left this year for Paris in Sept?

AMG boss confirms new E43 performance saloon to sit below 600bhp range-topping Mercedes-AMG E63

Boss of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers, has confirmed that a new E43 AMG performance model will join the range.

Speaking to Auto Express at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show he revealed, “we’ll see an E43 in the near future, but first we have to fulfil our promises,” adding that a GLC 43 will also join the line-up.

“These cars are close, we’ll see them in something like two months’ time,” Moers outlined.

The E43 will use the same 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6, nine-speed automatic gearbox and 4Matic four-wheel drive system as the C43, which produces 362bhp and sprints 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds.

It’s not known if the larger E43 will boast a power upgrade over its smaller sibling to counter the E-Class’s extra weight, but Moers did indicate that the new E63 AMG flagship will ramp the German power war up another notch with “around 600bhp.”

The E63 will be revealed at the end of the year and will feature the most powerful version of the firm’s 4.0-litre biturbo V8 to date, driving all four wheels for extra traction.

A modified version of this unit will also find its way into an even more hardcore version of the AMG GT sports car, called the AMG GT R as confirmed by Auto Express’s sister title Evo.

“We’re going to bring the next performance level in the GT,” said Moers. “It won’t necessarily use exactly the same engine as the E63 due to the demands of the GT, like the lightweight oriented design, but it’ll have the highest power output we’ve seen in that car yet.”

However, 4Matic four-wheel drive won’t be an option, according to Moers. “The GT will remain a pure sports car with rear-wheel drive only – nobody so far has complained about traction.”
