OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Viano - the dynamic MPV
Stuttgart/Reykjavik, Jun 18, 2006
Even in its fourth year of production, the Viano is good for a surprise or two. A new, powerful six-cylinder diesel engine sets a new standard in this segment. Adding yet another argument to the intelligent interior concept and adaptability of the Viano.
Viano CDI 3.0 with six-cylinder poise and assurance
Six-cylinder ride comfort and a very low fuel consumption, effortless performance and outstanding safety, the latest diesel technology and highly effective exhaust emission control – all these are combined in the new Viano CDI 3.0. This model is powered by a V6 diesel engine with 150 kW (204 hp), which sets new standards in terms of technology, performance and smooth, quiet running. With a displacement of three litres, an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and a maximum torque of 440 Nm, this V6 diesel power unit sets new records in the MPV segment. The result is effortless performance: the Viano CDI 3.0 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in only 9,2 seconds, and achieves a maximum speed of 198 km/h.
Wide range of engines, variants to suit every need
Numerous variants of the Mercedes-Benz Viano are available, with a choice of five engine outputs from 80 kW (109 hp) to 170 kW (231 hp), a manual or automatic transmission, three vehicle lengths and two wheelbases. Individual customer requirements are catered for by the design and equipment lines Trend and Ambiente, the recreation-oriented Fun version or the compact Marco Polo camper van. Customers are also able to choose between the "BIKE", "BUSINESS" and "LIFE" accessory packages – and also of course from numerous options with which any Viano can be configured to suit the personal wishes of its owner.
As safe as the best passenger cars
The numerous driver support and safety systems to passenger car standards are particularly worthy of mention: latest-generation ESP® with ABS, ASR, EBV, BAS and front airbags are standard equipment in all models. The Viano was recently given the highest safety rating comparable to that of the best cars, when it achieved an outstanding result in a crash test arranged by the testing organisation DEKRA. Clean emissions are also the order of the day: all the diesel models feature a particulate filter as standard, and are classified as low-emission vehicles according to EU 4/III.
A rear area to suit any requirement
Flexible interior systems emphasise the versatility of this model series. The compact version of the Viano Fun is equipped with five seats as standard. When combined with the bed extension its bench seat can be converted into a comfortable sleeping space, while the optional pop-up roof and roof bed extend the scope of applications yet further. The Marco Polo camper van comes with a galley and a wardrobe as well as individual seats in the rear which transform into a bed at the push of a button, meaning that is equipped with everything needed for weekend excursions and motoring holidays. The pop-up roof, which is optionally available with the EASY-UP electro-hydraulically operated system, is fitted with a double bed as standard.
Viano CDI 3.0 - brilliant technology, effortless performance, outstanding refinement
Six-cylinder ride comfort and a very low fuel consumption, superior performance and outstanding safety, the latest diesel technology and highly effective exhaust emission control – all these are combined in the new Viano CDI 3.0. This model is powered by a V6 diesel engine with 150 kW (204 hp), which sets new standards in terms of technology, performance and smooth, quiet running.
New records for output and torque
With a displacement of three litres, an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and a maximum torque of 440 Nm, this V6 diesel power unit sets new records in the MPV segment. The result is effortless performance: the Viano CDI 3.0 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in only 9,2 seconds, and achieves a maximum speed of 198 km/h.
Brilliant technology for peak performance and outstanding smoothness
These outstanding values are due to the outstanding technology of the ultra-modern OM 642 V6 engine, a long-stroke unit (bore x stroke 83 x 92 mm) with an aluminium crankcase and a V-angle of 72 degrees. Thanks to offset crank pins and a balancer shaft, this engine runs more smoothly than any other diesel in this class. Technical refinements include an aluminium cylinder head, four-valve technology, a total of four overhead camshafts with duplex chain drive and latest-generation common-rail injection. Piezo-electric injectors with eight injection holes spray the fuel into the combustion chambers at a maximum pressure of 1600 bar. This top-of-the-line Viano engine already comes highly recommended, as it has already proved outstandingly successful in numerous Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, right up to the S-Class. As in the Viano 3.0 and 3.5 with V6 petrol engines, power is transferred to the driven rear wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission whose comfort-oriented characteristics are configured for the enormous torque produced by the engine.
Favourable fuel consumption, particulate filter as standard
Thanks to its outstanding drive technology, the Viano CDI 3.0 not only delivers excellent performance figures, but also a low fuel consumption. Considering the vehicle’s size and performance potential, both the combined value of 9.2 litres/100 km and the individual values (urban 11.9, extra-urban 7.5 litres/100 km) are extremely favourable. The Viano CDI 3.0 is not only economical, but also environmentally friendly: like all Mercedes-Benz diesel models, it is equipped with a particulate filter as standard in many countries, and is classified as a low-emission vehicle according to EU 4/III.
Enormously powerful yet extraordinarily safe
The convincing overall impression made by the Viano CDI 3.0 is indissolubly linked with its high standard of safety – it is enormously powerful yet extraordinarily safe. The Viano CDI 3.0 is equipped with size 225/60 R 16 C wide-base tyres as standard, and like all variants of the Viano it also features fade-resistant disc brakes all round, ABS, Brake Assist, electronic brake force distribution (EBD), acceleration skid control (ASR) and the latest-generation Electronic Stability Program (ESP®). The passive safety features are no less impressive: during a crash test by the independent test organisation DEKRA, the Viano performed as well as the best passenger cars.
Viano - Trend and Ambiente: dynamic, flexible and safe
Designed as a platform for a new generation of Mercedes-Benz MPVs and recreational vehicles, the Viano is an exceptionally versatile performer by its very nature. There are three body lengths available – each with a choice of two wheelbase lengths and two gross vehicle weights – as well as one or two side sliding doors, five engine models, two transmission variants, three design and equipment lines and up to eight seats in various configurations – where else is all this to be had? The Viano is therefore ideal for private or commercial use, proving equally adept at carrying large families, business people and bulky items from the furniture store, for instance.
V6 petrol engines: driving pleasure and smooth running characteristics
The flexible, high-torque V6 engines with 3.2 and 3.7-litre displacements impress with their smooth running characteristics – as drivers of Mercedes-Benz passenger cars will testify – as well as with sheer driving pleasure and an extremely dynamic nature. The 140 kW (190 hp) engine delivers a peak torque of 270 Nm (between 2750 and 4750 rpm), while the larger power plant with 170 kW (231 hp) generates 345 Nm between 2500 rpm and 4500 rpm. Both variants comply with the latest emission standards (EU 4/I).
CDI engines: clean, powerful and economical
The Viano comes with a choice of four and six-cylinder diesel engines, with displacements of 2.2 and 3.0 litres and featuring CDI technology, as already installed in Mercedes–Benz passenger cars. The versions with in-line four-cylinder engines are available with outputs of 80 kW (109 hp) and 110 kW (150 hp). These give the driver the benefit of great agility at lower engine speeds. The basic engine makes a torque of 270 Nm available from 1600 rpm to 2500 rpm, with 330 Nm generated at 1800 rpm to 2400 rpm in the most powerful version. The new six-cylinder unit in the Viano 3.0 CDI enters new dimensions with an output of 150 kW (204 hp) and a maximum torque of 440 Nm at 1800 rpm to 2400 rpm. All the diesel engines already meet the stringent future EU 4/III exhaust emission standards – a first in this vehicle segment – and a particulate filter is standard in many markets.
Power is transmitted to the wheels of the Viano diesel versions by a six-speed manual transmission, which is fitted as standard. Meanwhile the V6 engines are paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, which is also available as an option for the four-cylinder diesel models.
Suspension: increased traction and active safety
The Viano with its longitudinally mounted engine and rear-wheel drive provides a high level of traction under any load conditions, a relatively small turning circle, well-balanced weight distribution between the front and rear axles, and outstanding manoeuvrability since the front wheels are used for steering rather than power transfer. A rear air suspension system, which is available for all models, provides even more refined ride comfort.
Standard equipment for all models includes the ESP® Electronic Stability Program, incorporating anti-lock brakes (ABS), acceleration skid control (ASR), electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and hydraulic Brake Assist (BAS). In critical situations on the road, ESP® is able to brake the wheels individually and thus counter oversteer or understeer as soon as it occurs.
Interior: dreams can come true
The Trend and Ambiente versions of the Viano are fitted with six individual seats as standard. Up to eight occupants can be accommodated with two three-seater benches which are available as optional extras. A cleverly conceived seat attachment system enables the seats to be moved to the desired position with a minimum of fuss. Locating them in an opposed position also increases the variability of the seating configuration. There is a wide choice of different seats available, allowing numerous configurations within the passenger area, including one, two and three-seat units, and seats which double up as beds in the Viano Fun. The individual seats with integrated three-point seat belts, head restraints and armrests are also easy to remove. All the seats are mounted on attachment rails with quick-release locks, and are slid to the desired position in closely-spaced adjustment increments of 2.5 cm. The interior can therefore be rapidly adapted for the required purpose. The guide rails also make it possible to fit a table or refrigerator box, or secure a carried load.
Viano Marco Polo - on the road to success
The Viano Marco Polo continues to go from strength to strength: last year it established another new production record of 1450 units. Thanks to new features such as a diesel particulate filter, which is standard in many markets, 4MATIC all-wheel drive or the new, particularly powerful and smooth CDI 3.0 V6 engine variant, Mercedes-Benz expects this compact camper van to remain firmly in the fast lane.
Fully-equipped living space
The Marco Polo conversion work, including the pop-up roof, is in the capable hands of Westfalia Van Conversion. The Marco Polo is based on the Viano MPV, and succeeds in combining excellent ride comfort and stable handling with a complete range of attractive fittings and furnishings. The dash-mounted shift lever and the space-saving design of the foot-operated parking brake allow unimpeded access to the rear. The centrepiece of the camper van conversion behind the swivelling front seats is a sliding, individually contoured bench seat. The bench seat adjusts on rails with a 2.5 cm hole pattern, allowing it to be locked into virtually any position. Passenger safety on the move comes in the form of three-point seat belts and Isofix child seat anchorage points.
Seats: electrically folding, pneumatically cushioned
The seat backrests fold flat electrically at the push of a button, conveniently turning the bench seat into a comfortable double bed. The bench seat comes equipped with pneumatic cushions as standard, which fulfil a dual purpose. As well as ensuring an optimum seating position, they also produce a level sleeping surface measuring 203 cm x 117 cm. There is plenty of space for bedding and items of luggage in the stowage compartments above and below the bed extension and in the practical stowage drawer beneath the bench seat. And if longer items such as skis need to be carried, the bench seat includes a through-loading facility.
EASY-UP: the roof that opens at the push of a button
Two further berths with a length of 2.05 metres below the pop-up roof are available as optional items. The roof bed features point-elastic springing which is particularly kind to the back and has been given a seal of approval for their health benefits by a leading German spinal health association. A reading lamp and an optional, electrically operated glass sliding roof are also incorporated into the roof. The bellows for the pop-up roof retract automatically when the roof is lowered. Customers are able to order the optional EASY-UP pop-up roof version whose electro-hydraulic drive conveniently raises the roof in a matter of a few seconds. With an overall height of 1980 mm, the Marco Polo is perfectly suited to everyday use and fits easily into all conventionally sized garages and multi-storey car parks.
Contemporary furniture design, roomy galley
On the left-hand side of the living area, as seen in the direction of travel, is the wardrobe followed by the galley. Surfaces with an aluminium finish contrast with wood-effect trim to give the fittings and furnishings a sophisticated feel. The galley comprises a two-burner gas stove, sink, draining board, a compressor-driven refrigerator box with a capacity of 40 litres and generous stowage space, including drawers, a floor cabinet and a litter bin. The practical, space-saving roller shutter doors used for the galley cabinet immediately catch the eye. Meals are served at a folding table, which can be neatly stowed away in the sliding door's panelling whilst on the move.
A cabinet with a twist
A stowage compartment in the roof and an optimised cabinet arrangement provides the basis for excellent space utilisation. A pivoting cabinet in the rear section of the Marco Polo allows the stove's gas bottle to be replaced even when the cabinet is full. Items can also be placed into the wardrobe from this side.
Onboard power and water supply
Three 12V power sockets and one 230V power socket have been included for electrical appliances. When the vehicle is connected up to an external 230 V mains supply, both the standard-fit auxiliary battery and the starter battery are recharged via the charger unit. The water tanks are located inside the vehicle for frost protection and have a capacity of 36 litres for fresh water and 32 litres for waste water. An additional single seat or two-seater bench can be supplied as an accessory, which enables the Viano Marco Polo to accommodate five or even six persons. Further items of optional equipment include a fuel-fired auxiliary heating system with timer, air conditioning for the rear and a bicycle rack. Add to this a wide selection of paint finishes and upholsteries and it is easy to see why the Marco Polo has established itself as the practical, versatile and customised partner of choice for both work and pleasure.
Viano Fun - the all-rounder for work and recreation
The Viano Fun, a prime example of the tremendous versatility of the Viano model range, copes just as proficiently with sports equipment as it does with family excursions or major supermarket shopping trips. Moreover, this Mercedes model also makes an excellent company car or mobile office. This seemingly limitless versatility stems from the large, multifunctional interior. While the driver and front passenger make themselves comfortable on individual seats with standard-fit inner armrests, there is a bench seat in the rear with room for up to three passengers. The longer Fun model comes with an extra individual seat as standard, with a second seat available as an option. Both individual seats can be positioned facing in the direction of travel or opposed.
The bench seat adapts to any requirement
The seating unit is designed in such a way that it can be adapted to suit the relevant transport task in an instant. By virtue of its ingenious rail system, the bench seat's positioning can be adjusted in 2.5 cm increments, allowing the luggage space in the rear to be varied as required. And when longer items are to be loaded, the rear bench seat in the Viano Fun can be removed without the need for any tools. Alternatively, the bench seat can transform into a generously sized and comfortable bed in just a few quick steps. Thanks to the extension included as standard, the bed measures around two metres in length. Passengers on the rear bench seat benefit from a full complement of safety features, including a trio of three-point, inertia-reel seat belts, three head restraints and integral Isofix anchorage points for three child seats.
Spacious seating group in the rear
The front seats of the compact Fun model can be swivelled to the rear. This feature, coupled with a table that is simply hooked into the sidewall and an energy-saving interior lighting system featuring transistor lamps, transforms the interior into a spacious and comfortable seating group. While the vehicle is on the move, the table can be securely stowed in the sidewall panelling of the sliding door. In the longer Fun model the table is located between the rear bench seat and the individual seat. It does not have to be stowed away during the journey, and is within easy reach of all seats in the rear when they are positioned to face one another.
Appointments: practical, easy to clean and comprehensive
The interior equipment offers sports enthusiasts, families and business people alike exactly what they are looking for in such a multi-purpose vehicle. The plastic floor covering in the rear features a hard-wearing, easy-clean design, as do the seat covers and the ceiling-to-floor panelling of the sidewalls. The standard specifications also include cup holders, a waste bin, a collapsible shopping crate with fastening, 12 volt sockets, two interior lights plus two additional, low-energy light fittings, as well as two stowage drawers underneath the bench seat. The drawers can also be removed to create enough space for bulkier items.
There is virtually no end to the scope of applications for the Viano Fun. The range of options for the longer version includes a pop-up roof which can be equipped with an additional bed. As in the Marco Polo, this roof can also be supplied with the electro-hydraulically operated EASY-UP system. The Viano Fun is accompanied by a wide selection of optional extras to suit individual requirements, such as a hot-air auxiliary heating system, a cool box or a bicycle rack.
