As you may remember, last week Mercedes announced plans to slightly revise their brand design, separating the universally-recognizable Mercedes-Benz Star from the trademark printed "Mercedes-Benz" lettering. Further expanding upon this new brand image, Mercedes has announced today they'll also be implementing a new "acoustic trademark" for use in all ad broadcasts as well - a "sound logo" which serves to focus attention more sharply on the star as the Mercedes-Benz trademark.

According to Dr. Olaf Göttgens, Vice President Brand Communications Mercedes-Benz Cars: "Our new sound logo is going to make the Mercedes-Benz brand not only visually, but also acoustically distinctive, and thus more quickly recognizable. This acoustic trademark is a perfect fit for Mercedes-Benz — it is emotional, elegant, and unmistakably associated with our brand."

The new sound logo, based on an original recording of an English boys choir from the 1990s, makes use of a choir boy’s solo vocal from the recording, and was developed in conjunction with Mercedes' lead agency, Jung von Matt. To see and hear it in action, here's an E-Class ad making use of the new acoustic wizardry; and for more info about the sound logo keep reading for the full press release.

Enjoy.

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

Mercedes-Benz Introduces Sound Logo

Stuttgart – As part of its new brand image, Mercedes-Benz is for the first time introducing an “acoustic trademark”: the new sound logo, which will be used in all ad broadcasts starting on November 1, 2007, is intended to enhance the further developed brand design. Combined with a new film fade-out, the distinctive sound serves to focus attention more sharply on the star as the Mercedes-Benz trademark.

“Our new sound logo is going to make the Mercedes-Benz brand not only visually, but also acoustically distinctive, and thus more quickly recognizable,” says Dr. Olaf Göttgens, Vice President Brand Communications Mercedes-Benz Cars. “This acoustic trademark is a perfect fit for Mercedes-Benz — it is emotional, elegant, and unmistakably associated with our brand.”

The Mercedes-Benz sound logo is based on an original recording of an English boys choir from the 1990s. Sound engineers extracted a choir boy’s solo vocal from the recording and adapted it for use in the sound logo. The logo was developed in cooperation with Jung von Matt, Mercedes-Benz’ lead agency.

The ad is rather strange...
The sound logo is the short chor at the end, coming at the same time as the bright star.
Impressive effect I must say.

wow..thats creepy as hell..haha
would go good with a angry AMG car..but with a normal MB it seems wierd..

I think they're going for a mystifying effect here. It is kinda erie too.

M

LAME!!

they could have chosen something more unique and technologically progressive. To think I actually got excited at the prospect of an MB sound logo! :t-crazy2: But they give us this - a pre-adolescent boy that sounds slightly flat. :t-banghea

Great! I've always connected their logo with a castrated boy choir. :D

Btw, BMW & Audi have been using this feature for a long time.

Here is the BMW trademark sound (at the end of the ad) - two "bongs":

And the one from Audi (as well at the end of the ad):

PS: that MB sound logo is indeed a bit creepy :eusa_thin

The BMW one is super great..i love it..but sometimes i feel like it should have been three bongs.. it just ends without a warning..but it still rocks

Audi one is nice to..very german..hehe

But MB..well i guess we need to get used to that horror flick sound..haha

The BMW one is oustanding! They've used it for a while now, and it just says BMW 100%. Thump thump (heart beat -->sports, excitment) the metalic sound (technology, progress etc.).

I expected something at least as innovative from MB. But no, they've paid millions for some marketing ''genius'' to come up with what is one of the most cliched sounds that could be associated with the brand. What exactly does it say about Mercedes? Not much really. ahh ahh ahhh *vomit*

Sorry...I just hate this crap with a passion. :t-banghea

Hmm...In my opinion the sound doesn't really fit to Mercedes!! BMWs and Audis sound is just great... ...I miss this recognition value in the Mercedes one!

I don't want to see this ad in the cinema where it's dark and the sound is surrounding me:D

I just can't imagine this sound logo being played in some AMG model ad. :eusa_thin

Really ... :t-banghea

Imagine C63 ad, showing power, agility, aggression ... and then in the end this squeaking sound logo appears. :t-crazy2:

IMO this sound represents innocence, mystique, spiritualism, religion, humbleness, weakness. Is this what MB want to be associated with? I don't think so.

And I just can't get the following picture out of my head when hearing that sound logo: pedophilia / child molestation (choir boy + priest). :eusa_thin

To me boy choirs have always been a bit creepy, bizarre, even obscene. Young boys being used for giving (musical / vocal) pleasure to old men (clergy) ... all in the name of God: innocent children of God singing songs to the Lord ... Yeah, right. C'mon!

Very bad sample used for a sound logo! Bad move, MB!

Well of course this is quite surprinsing, didn't expect that kind of thing; and why the hell an English chor, are they forgetting they are German and that the Germans wrote some of the most beautiful pages in the music's history?

Anyway, this is much more emotional than the others, it is musical and...not bad, actually. It is quite good in connection with the dramatic appearance of the bright star.

It is classy, out of the fashion, and very emotionnal. Dramatic. It underlines how exceptionnal a Mercedes is, imo we soon will get used to it. Not only cold technic, but a spirit, an elegance, an idea of something in the same time very old and very modern...

It may be strange right now, sure we will learn to like it.
It makes a whole, sound and image of the star together.

^ Can you picture this sound logo being used in an AMG advert?

I just can't.

It works OK with eg. E-class, or S-class.

But together with eg. C63 AMG (or even that C-class ad with Alonso), GL, A-class, SLK etc ... :t-hands: That's beyond my imaginating possibilities.

:eusa_thin

I really can't imagine this sound logo being used in ads showing sportiness, aggression, agility, power ow particular MB cars. Showing Elegance & sophistication - yes, showing power & sportiness - no way.

Well EnI, concerning the pedophilia...

Then one could say BMW's logo evokes the dead peaople in a hospital with his heart stopping to beat for the third beat..

See it as the voice of an angel instead :D

wow no offense..but damn you just spun it in a totally wrong direction..
