Rumors have swirled for some time about Mercedes-Benz’s desire to build a new high-end sports car to compete with the likes of Porsche’s 911 Turbo and Audi’s pending higher-power V-10 R8 coupe (whose name has yet to be disclosed).

mb-slc-1-250.jpgAccording to Hans Lehmann over at Hidden Image (whose spy shooters clocked this prototype), the car, dubbed “SLC,” will be built on the next-generation SL platform and be motivated by the company’s 6.2-liter AMG V-8. Given that it’s based on the SL’s architecture, the car is certain to be front-engined, and it’s likely to brandish around 500 horsepower, though a pair of turbos could be strapped on to provide a couple of hundred additional ponies if officials deem it necessary.

Like BMW’s M6, the SLC’s hard top is expected to be rendered in carbon fiber, a material which should be in good use throughout the vehicle.

Hidden Image expects the exotic to be revealed at next year's Geneva Motor Show.

Finally it’s on its way, Mercedes new rival to the Audi RS8. It has been rumored for quite a while, and here are the first signs that it actually already exists.

These are the first pictures of an early mule for the new sports car by Mercedes likely to be named SLC. The new car will be developed and built by the German sports car maker HWA who is AMG´s partner at the German Touring car Masters. HWA is investing € 4.5 million to triple the size of its production center in Affalterbach, near Stuttgart, to about 3.600 square meters to build the car.

Based on the next generation SL, the SLC will be powered by the 6.2 liter AMG V8 delivering 500 bhp mounted in the front. Based on that fact, we can clearly rule out the mid-engine rumors. If needed this engine could deliver up to 700 bhp with twin turbos. The SLC will be more sport than luxury, and therefore reminds us of the recently shown Black Series cars - a race car built for the road, like the RS-series from Porsche.

The sports car’s hard top as well as many other lightweight parts will be completely made of carbon fibre. Most technical parts and a lot from the interior will be shared with the next generation SL.

We can expect a concept of this super sports car at next year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Oh snap it's on. The huge wing is an indication that the car isn't your typical divorced wife's SL like the SL65.

hell yeah its on for real now..cant wait..i hope HWA makes it even more hardcore than ppl can imagene..
hopefully we are entering a new era of sporty MB´s with the black series and now this..

Is this then the rumored SLR replacement? It certainly makes sense to share the chasis with the SL, but the engine choices better be a bit spicier than the NA 6.3L. Also, by hard top, do they mean a closed top, or a folding one. I hope it is the first, to keep weight down, and not just some arrangement similar to the SLK black series.

Somewhere I have read that the SLR replacement (this?) could have up to 1000hp, in addition to a Hammer III engine in the line-up.

Nope. This will be a "mini SLR" priced somewhere around the R8.

To be honest with you, my opinion is that this prototype is the new SL AMG Black Series.

They keep getting more and more hardcore don't they? Bonnet Slats, massive wing (which is hideous no less) and more open front dams.

based off the new FL the SL will be gettin next year..

That can impossibly be a SL black series. Look at the vents on the hood and the beasty DTM-ish wing. It must be a prototype for the long anticipated "P8".

I agree. The new Benz supercar, whatever you'd like to call it, is suppose to be mid engined.... though I wouldn't be surprised if it was the opposite to follow the form of the SLR, but this car is suppose to be slightly smaller anyway.

If this keep going Im going to abandon BMW. BMW are focusing too much on normal roadcars, I want to see more racing inspired bmw cars, more CSL versions and more sportycars.
BMW stop building car for the masses show us perfomance cars for the rich and the car-enthusiasts.

If this keep going Im going to abandon BMW. BMW are focusing too much on normal roadcars, I want to see more racing inspired bmw cars, more CSL versions and more sportycars.
