Once again Mercedes has redefined the formal German luxury barge. In all the measurables it's better than ever of course - safer, quieter, smoother and more authoritative down the road. Remember it was already the leader, or thereabouts, in those things so it's going to give its rivals an awful shock.
Maybe more important though, it's become less clinical and formal than before. It's gone quite a bit more lush.

As tech-laden as the new S-Class is, the real achievement resides in the interior, and props must be given to the interior design leader Hans-Peter Wunderlich. The interior is simply outstanding. It's the first German interior able to stand its ground against British cars from Jaguar, Bentley, and even Rolls-Royce. Wood and leather abound, snaking through the cabin in long, winding shapes. Perhaps "swanning" through the cabin is the better way to term it, as Hans-Peter told me that swan wings were the inspiration for the shape of the doors and dash. Speaking of the dash, gone are the W221's four rectilinear vents, replaced by six round ones. Combined with the clock, the effect of all seven circles is supposed to mimic a woman's necklace or bracelet. It looks luxurious and well-designed. Hans-Peter explained that not only is a round shape timeless, but going forward all Mercedes vents will be round. Odd, then, that the rear vents on the new S-Class's B-pillars are still rectangles. Currently, only the SL and the SLS feature round vents, and there are two round vents on the extreme ends of the C-Class' dash, and two rectangular ones in the middle; that car gets replaced next year. My other favorite interior design flourish is the speaker grilles for the Burmester sound system, which are covered in an impossibly complex pattern of tiny, varying-sized holes. The grilles get more fascinating the longer you stare, though if you suffer from trypophobia, look elsewhere.

Care to explain what on Earth you're talking about, or is it the usual biased clap-trap you spout in every single thread you take part in.

To quote Greg Kable......

Eh, a car magazine can't give a full 5 stars to a car with no steering feel. From a source that biased, I'll take it as a win. :)

The irony of accusing a magazine of "bias" if it doesn't give a car five stars, despite the fact that you haven't even driven the car yourself is astounding and surely lost on you, yes?

You, and not just you I hasten to add, are as biased as you could possibly be! The S-Class is surely a true masterpiece, but to not accept that it might have the odd flaw and to knee-jerkingly accuse reviewers of bias if they don't give it the review YOU want is the true definition of "bias". You've already made your mind up before driving the car yourself. That sounds very biased to me.
 
Yeah Betty that is a pretty biased review lol! Best Mercedes ever built? Seriously though, that is really something to be said. If anything Autocar will still want the XJ because it is sportier and that is their right I guess. Still though the market has spoke and will speak again.

Irony not found. You're reading into my comment a little much there Swollocks. I posted the article earlier in the thread saying the review was positive. In a subsequent comment, I said Greg Kable is biased because in past articles he's written he has indeed written some articles that clearly favor the "home team". In the comment you quoted, I was giving the Benz a thumbs up because despite his usual antics, the car did well in the review. And yes, almost every article I've read so far as mentioned the steering feel as a negative so I essentially said less than 5 stars should be accepted as normal. There is no review that I "wanted".

So there you have it. I'm not an S-class leghumper, there's a reason why I own a competitor. ;)

For the record, if I was a car reviewer I think I would only ever give four and a half stars. Five would imply perfection and surely by the LCI the S-Class will be slightly better somehow.


These stars mean nothing by the way. It's simply a reader friendly way to show the overall verdict at a glance. The main text is what counts and the Autocar review is about as good as it gets.

Or, if you're familiar with Autocar, that's a damn good car and they clearly liked it, despite the steering feel which could've elevated it to 5 stars. I see your side of the argument, but it was more of a tongue in cheek jab at Autocar in general.

I liked blue anthracite and leder designo.
