MERCEDES EQS (2020)
All information about the electric S-Class

As of 2020, Mercedes is planning to build a luxury electric car in addition to the EQA and the EQC, which will carry the abbreviation EQS. Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche confirmed the model recently at the Bosch Connected World in Berlin, now we have exclusively the first pictures of the model.

Michael Kelz, head of the Mercedes-Benz EQC series at Mercedes, concretized the brand's electric plans: "We will have an electric car that is undoubtedly at the level of an S-Class, but it will not be an S-Class". The car will be luxurious and the top model of the EQ series. It is therefore clear that the conventional S-Class will not additionally be available as a pure electric version.

The Mercedes EQS builds on the brand's modular electric architecture (MEA), which will also carry the two other EQA and EQC models. The latter is the first model of the EQ series and will be launched in 2019. The SUV will be in size between the GLC and GLE and could have a range of up to 500 kilometers. The power of the drive is scalable. The EQC is expected to cost around 70,000 euros. The second model Mercedes 2020 puts on is the EQA. The electric car in compact car size is to come with about a 400 kilometers range.

On our first exclusive pictures, the Mercedes EQS still carries much camouflage at the rear. Underneath, however, hides a flat tapering rear, some of which is already visible under the camouflage. The coupe-like roof shape and the flat windshield are already very well recognizable. The four-door car has a slightly curved lower window line, the exterior mirrors are mounted on the door sill. Eye-catching are the very pointed forward-facing windows. The front doors appear extremely long, the rear door openings rather narrow. The short overhang at the front gives the limousine even more optical length. The projecting - under the camouflage - headlights reach far into the fender.

The Mercedes EQS is built in Sindelfingen, while the EQC runs off the assembly line in Bremen. Mercedes produces the EQA in Rastatt. Mercedes also wants to offer a large luxury SUV in addition to the EQS. In addition, the plant in Hambach is building the Smart ED, which will be available exclusively as an electric car as Fortwo and Forfour from 2020 and also belongs to the EQ series. By 2022, Daimler is investing more than 10 billion euros in electromobility. By this time, all Mercedes vehicles should be electrified, including ten pure electric cars.

What the hell is that lol? Looks like a FWD/R-Class replacement. Then again the rear is a camouflage trick to make you think it's a wagon? Interesting.

I don't know what we're looking at lol. It's going to be a bold design for a Benz. We should see it in 2020 I guess?

I'll readily admit that the prospect of mainstream/relatively mainstream sedans/sedoupes/estates eventually resembling capsules irks me a bit. Perhaps I'll get used to it with time. Or won't have to deal with it much (as a mid-sexagenario).
And hey...I can still vividly recall when over 40% of the cars on my countrys´ roads were VW bugs. And when luxury sedans (save illustrious exceptions such as Citröens original DS and CX successor or Jaguars´ series I XJ6/12) resembled a stacked pair of rectangles, the longer one on the bottom-the shorter one placed midsection on top. I was quite capable of quickly embracing the epic changes in automotive design (the dawn of the FWD hatchback in the form of FIATs' 127, Simcas' 1100, BLs' (BMC) 1100s-which were not really "hatches"', the VW Golf. Or the first mid-engined Ferraris and Lamborghinis' Miura). And I'm really liking what I have seen so far of Porsches´upcoming Taycan, although it's exterior design is arguably not that revolutionary.

Still...I'll miss those long, low hoods.

God aweful proportions. Looks like a Renault with camo.

And also.. EQA, EQC, EQS.... I always wonder why MB hires todlers to make up their horrible model designations...

So where is the EQE?

Woof. I'm struggling with this a bit.

What is so horrible about it? EQ is their pure electric line and A, C, and S are very well known cars in the Mercedes hierarchy. It's consistent with the "GL" prefix for the SUVs too.

Now that I look at it, looks like this will be the first model to take on a roofline more inspired by the F105 Luxury in Motion car than the traditional models:

Personal thing I suppose. I really dislike the ML name change too.

Industry rumours indeed do suggest that this is the basis of the design for the production car. Why have two S-Klasse's especially when W223 will almost certainly have an option of EV and Hybrid.

The W223 isn't supposed to have a full EV though, just hybrid. MB isn't doing things like BMW is with the X3 and iX3 and so on.

Can we split the threads? Make an EQ C thread and an EQ S thread? There will be a lot of spy photos etc. for both.

Agreed.

Could it in fact be an AM-Lagonda EV sedan mule ? I see some similarities with the Lagonda Vision Concept illustrations.

They do look similar, don’t they? That’s a Mercedes lot though (all surrounding vehicles are MB), would be weird for an Aston mule to be crawling around there.

Could be testing telematics if MB is still helping with that though.

I recall that several swirly-foiled Infiniti G60 mules were spotted in and around the parameters of M-Bs' production facility in Sindelfingen a few years ago.

If MB wants to sell EQS to it’s traditional customers, they’d better not make it a F105 lookalike.
I do like the render in @Wolfgang post. Even I would buy such a design.

I very vaguely seem to recall that Dr. Zetsche himself mentioned that M-B and AMG BEV offerings would display very similar proportions to those of their PHEV/ICE sedan/estate/coupe and SUV/SAV products. And thus, my skepticism as to whether the pictured mule is really the EQ-S.
