Concept Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV

Might not be called the "MLC"? :)

Mercedes plans 'on-road' SUV line

BEIJING -- Mercedes-Benz is considering separate model lines for its SUVs that have mainly car-like characteristics and those that are aimed at customers who want off-road capability.

The division would happen after Mercedes launches a production version of the Concept Coupe SUV that debuted at the auto show here on April 20. The concept previews a rival to the BMW X6 and it will be built at Mercedes's U.S. plant in Vance, Alabama, starting next year.

"The Concept Coupe SUV previews a four-door, coupe-styled model that will appeal to customers who want a sportily designed vehicle with a high seating position, " Thomas Weber, the brand's r&d chief, said.

The concept's production model could be part of a new model line of "on-road" SUVs that could also include a coupe-styled version of the GLA compact SUV, he said. Mercedes began selling the GLA in Europe in March and it is due in U.S. showrooms in September.

Neither Weber nor Mercedes would comment on the exact launch date of the production version of the Concept Coupe SUV or on its production name, which media reports have said will be the MLC.

MBUSA doesn't seem convinced yet? :)

Cannon: 'Amazing product' drives Mercedes' sales

There are two places you have to be careful of: going too far down and doing mash-up cars -- two different genres. Taking space vehicles and sedans and mashing them into some kind of a GT concept with a bubble back. Acura has had a vehicle like that. Those are niches I'm not sure are worth chasing for us because they are so limited in volume. When you put two different car concepts together, sometimes you lay an egg, and there are risks in that for a premium brand.

^ Agreed. There's a chance MBUSA might not offer the Coupe SUVs, similar to the C-wagon, or the CLS and CLA Shooting Brakes,
as the segment doesn't seem to be too popular in the USA according to some recent sales stats. :)

Sounds like BMW's Progressive Activity Sedans (GTs) ... Something MB also plans to do based on current C-class, as reported by German automotive magazines.

^ Was it green lighted yet? Since the Sportcoupe may be based on the C-Class L, it may be reserved for China, as MB plans more tailor-made offerings. :)

If the liftback model is the one that actually gets the green light, we wouldn't be too unhappy...

Details remain scarce, although sources suggest the new C-Class Sportcoupe will use the same extended wheelbase as the Chinese-market-only C-Class saloon, providing it with additional levels of rear seat legroom over the standard sedan, wagon and coupe models.

With C-class production sites in Germany, the United States, South Africa and China, "we can offer tailor-made models for the different markets," Ola Kaellenius, Mercedes's sales chief, said in an interview during a test drive event near Marseille, France. "The trend for further variety continues."

Oh there will be a five dr Sport Coupe. The 3er Gran Turismo has shown that as well as in China , in Europe there is a demand for premium hatches. The 3er GT is outselling the F31 in the USA.
The 3er GT has sold better than initially expected first year target has been exceeded and its first year is in June.

its an acquired taste like the 5er GT but if you like that taste or you have a craving for that because of your needs? I would recommend the 3er GT 20d, a most compelling reason to own a 3er that must be absolutely competent. Even better in Black Sapphire with the M Sport packet and 19" wheels it looks absolutely brilliant.

^ But management may not have signed off on the Sport Coupe yet. Here's what's next in the 205 pipeline: :)

With the new C-class range, Mercedes will build a coupe and convertible from the ground up for the first time. How significant is that?

We love the amount of differentiation from the CLA. The C class is a more grown-up car. The car has S-class styling cues. The interior is a clear differentiator from the entry CLA. It is more crafted, more luxurious and more stylized. The whole cockpit has a feeling of attention to detail like the S class.

From a technology standpoint, the C class will boast all of the Intelligent Drive attributes that the S class has and that will not be available on the CLA. This is the fastest we have ever migrated the top technology from an S-class platform onto an entry product -- nine months.

What will be different with the C-class coupe?

This time, the differentiation with the coupe and sedan will be spectacular. In the last generation, we re-engineered a coupe on a sedan. This time they were engineered from birth. Which means it is more aggressive and sportier than ever before. On top of that, we will add the cabriolet. It will give folks the option of open driving at a new price point for Mercedes-Benz. The E class was the entry convertible before.

How long after the sedan will you roll out the C-class coupe and convertible?

A one-year gap.

It's my opinion that they could take the fresher styiling changes to the lights, bumpers, etc. and just apply this to a regular ML, and you'd be able to sell that many more MLs as opposed to going to the trouble of adding a new model. Instead, the ML facelift will still be a tired, uber conservative look.
