Mercedes-Benz Cars Australia sold a shade over 4000 AMG models in 2015, a proportionally higher figure than any other market.
The remarkable statistic means about 13 per cent of all of Mercedes-Benz’s passenger car and SUV sales were hardcore AMG derivatives, or around one-in-eight. Benz Australia did about 31,700 passenger cars and SUVs in 2015.
No other Mercedes-AMG market has such a proportionally high figure. Even in raw, gross terms, the total of about 4000 units for the calendar year places Australia well inside the global top five.
Let’s give the circa-4000 sales figure context. Final 2015 VFACTS sales figures will not be released until this Wednesday, but on trends, Mercedes-AMG’s sales will be close to Peugeot (likely to total about 4100) and Porsche (about 4300).
The top-selling Mercedes-AMG model in 2015 was the CLA45 AMG, which managed around 1100 units (about 15 per cent being the Shooting Brake). The related, just-updated, A45 AMG managed 700 and the GLA45 AMG a further 600 or so.
The traditional top-selling Mercedes-AMG, the C63 AMG S sedan and wagon, managed about 560 units since their mid-2015 launch — about 10 per cent being wagons — placing them on track to take back the mantle from the CLA45 in 2016. The older-generation, runout C63 coupe managed a further 100.
Some other unusual figures include the fact that the G63 was the top-selling G-Wagen variant, while the GLE63 AMG coupe has so far outsold the ‘regular’ GLE63.

This list includes the updated, CLA45, A45 and GLA45 variants in Q1, the GLS63 off-roader in April, the C63 AMG S coupe around mid-year, the updated SL63 in Q3 alongside the S63 convertible.
The new E63 AMG S and an AMG derivative of the GLC coupe could also squeeze into 2016.
