McLaren announces Sports Series model for Q2 2015

McLaren Sports Series to be unveiled at New York Auto Show in April
By Adrian Padeanu

Will cost around $180,000

A McLaren representative has announced the Sports Series will make its world premiere in April 2015 at the New York Auto Show.

It was only yesterday when we shared the first batch of spy images depicting McLaren's entry-level model and now company CEO Mike Flewitt has revealed plans to bring the car to next year's New York Auto Show kicking off on April 1 with the press preview. While the 650S Coupe carries a starting price of about $270,000 in United States, the Sports Series (previously known as P13) will begin at somewhere in the region of $180,000.

Technical specifications are not available at this point but the base McLaren will likely get the same twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine which will be detuned to under the 600 HP (441 kW) mark. The attached spy images show a significantly different design but still true to McLaren's recent models such as the 625C, 650S and the flagship P1.

McLaren wants to sell 2,000 units of the Sports Series in 2016, a figure which according to Flewitt will not affect the brand's image of being a "very exclusive company."

Was playing around in Photoshop... It might look a bit accurate, but as with all renderings, the real deal always looks a thousand times better. :)

That $180K price point will put it substantially north of the 911 in the states. Must be targeting high-end only 911 market.

McLaren Sports Series returns in official teaser image

To be unveiled in April at NYIAS
McLaren has released a new teaser image with their entry-level model called Sports Series set to be unveiled in 2015.

Codenamed P13, McLaren's more affordable model is estimated to cost around $180,000 in United States which will make it a lot cheaper than the 650S Coupe priced at $270,000. As seen in previous spy shots, the model will borrow some styling cues from the 650S and P1 but will obviously be considerably smaller and come with a different rear diffuser, unique taillights and narrower side vents while the butterfly doors will be kept.

McLaren hasn't provided any details as to what will power the Sports Series but chances are it will be a detuned version of the 3.8-liter V8 twin-turbo that will generate less than 600 HP (441 kW) to distance itself enough from the 625C.

Described as being a "pure McLaren", the Sports Series is expected to be fully revealed on April 1 at the 2015 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) and will be followed shortly by a Spider derivative. The British marque wants to sell 2,000 units of their new entry-level model in 2016, a quantity which they say won't have a negative impact on the company's exclusivity.
