German carmakers combine for U.S. clean diesel push

Sat Oct 7, 2006 1:01pm ET161

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's carmakers are looking to join forces to push clean diesels in the U.S. market with the Bluetec technology developed by Mercedes-Benz and diesel injection system specialist Bosch.

Starting in 2008, Volkswagen, its premium unit Audi, BMW and Mercedes aim to launch and market Bluetec in the world's largest car market, where diesel has a market share of just 5 percent versus 50 percent in western Europe.

Spokespersons for Volkswagen and Mercedes parent DaimlerChrysler confirmed a report in German industry newspaper Automobilwoche to be published on Monday.

Aside from a quicker market penetration, the alliance is hoping to gain cost savings in purchasing the specific modules that mainly stem from Bosch, the world's largest automotive parts supplier.

Bluetec diesels fulfil the stringent U.S. emission norm Bin 5 that goes into effect in 2009.

MUNICH, Germany -- Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are forming an alliance to make their new diesel engines more popular in the United States.

The alliance, the first for the four brands, will use the Bluetec emissions treatment system developed by Bosch and Mercedes-Benz. They plan to offer it under the Bluetec trade name and show several Bluetec-equipped vehicles at the Los Angeles auto show in December.

While about half of the new cars in western Europe have diesel engines, the figure is only 2 percent in the United States. Diesels have a poor image in America because of their history as being loud, sluggish and environmentally unfriendly. Bluetec is supposed to change that - and to help German automakers battle the popularity of hybrid powertrains.

The Bluetec system is a suite of technologies that includes traps and filters and urea injection. Urea systems shoot an ammonialike acid into the exhaust pipes, radically reducing oxides of nitrogen.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer and DaimlerChrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche are expected to work out the final details of the alliance this week. Audi chief Martin Winterkorn and VW brand chief Wolfgang Bernhard reportedly have agreed to the project already.

The alliance partners are expected to announce the plan within two weeks.

Bluetec diesels meet the highest emissions standards in the United States. The diesel alliance sees an advantage in marketing the system under a common brand name, Bluetec, as well as economies of scale in purchasing. Bosch provides major modules for the Bluetec system.

During the Los Angeles auto show, Dec. 1-10, the alliance plans to present its first Bluetec models to the public. Industry sources say VW will present its new compact SUV, the Tiguan, with Bluetec.

Reportedly, Audi will show the Q7 and BMW the new X5 with Bluetec. Mercedes wants to exhibit the R, M and GL classes. DaimlerChrysler's Jeep brand is expected to show the Grand Cherokee with a Bluetec engine.

These models will be brought to market in 2008, one year after Bin 5 emission rules go into effect in the United States.

Good for the other brands to join this gr8 project..

PS
Once again MB leads and the others follow..( nothing wrong with that though)

Re: Bluetec Bonanza

All I can say is FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!

I really hope one day to own a Diesel as my family car and a nice little petrol car for fun!

All the sports facilities in the US are creating an Alliance of Urinals for Bluetec. All beer will be discounted 10% if you use one of the Bluetec Urinals owned by the alliance. The urine will then be collected with special alliance containers and distributed to dealers of the Bluetec Alliance. Budweiser and other sponsors can have their logos attached to the Bluetec pumps at the dealers so when refilling, Bluetec diesel owners can be assured of their favorite urine going into their urea tank.

I've heard such jokes on several forums.

So here goes :

- Bluetec diesels used on some trucks
- EU legislation favours Bluetec
- urine is not just ureea;
* urine is: ureea + minerals + salts + uric acid + posible drugs + others stuff = it might be harmfull for the engine.

Bluetec isn't injected into the engine.

True. The system transforms liquid urea from seperate tank to ammonia, and insert it in exhaust gases from engine just before they enter the catalytic converter.

Re: MB, BMW, Audi & VW agreed to offer US clean diesels under BLEUTEC name

Ok, here goes :

It doesn't quite run on urea, but a solution called 'Adblue' is sprayed on to the catalytic convertor which breaks the NOX down into Nitrogen and Oxygen. Adblue is c.35% synthetic urea and 65% deionised water.

The advent of Euro4 means that all truck manufacturers are going to have to choose between the Adblue route or Exhaust Gas Recirculation [EGR] whilst Euro 5 will probably require all manufacturers to go down the Adblue route. Requirements for North America are slightly less clear cut.

Happy you freak ?! ;)

Can't you get a joke ?!

Much better. :)

Re: MB, BMW, Audi & VW agreed to offer US clean diesels under BLEUTEC name

Here's a tool to find AdBlue. So far it only works in Europe, though, and for trucks. Might work with COMAND NAVs in the future? :)

but you dont need to add that adblue all the time..
it gets filled when you service your car..and thats it..

Daimler in Talks With Others on Bluetec

DaimlerChrysler in Discussions With German Automakers on Bluetec

WASHINGTON (AP) -- DaimlerChrysler AG said Wednesday that other German automakers are likely to end up using the name of its Bluetec clean diesel technology in the United States.

Rudolf Thom, in a briefing with reporters on DaimlerChrysler's Bluetec system, said "you will hear in the near future that our German competitors will use the same name for their clean diesel."

[Automotive News reported last week that DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz, BMW AG, Volkswagen AG and Audi AG, which is part of Volkswagen, were talking about forming an alliance to make the diesel engines more popular in the U.S. The technology would be displayed on several vehicles at the Los Angeles Auto Show in December.

"We have a very clear commitment and a cooperation to develop, for example, the parts we need to reach the emissions standards," said Thom, director of development for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars certification and regulatory affairs.

Officials with BMW and Volkswagen declined comment.

DaimlerChrysler officials said the branding of Bluetec would help tackle the perception in the U.S., created in the 1980s, that diesels are loud and pollute the environment.

Bluetec is billed by DaimlerChrysler as the world's cleanest diesel, using filters and traps to reduce soot and nitrogen oxide emissions.
Mercedes-Benz began selling an E-320 Bluetec sedan in the U.S. and Canada this week to coincide with the release of new ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel in the marketplace. The fuel and clean diesel technology work in tandem to significantly reduce emissions.

Diesel has been touted as an alternative to gasoline because it offers more power and about 30 percent better gas mileage. J.D. Power and Associates project diesels to grow from 3.6 percent of the U.S. market to about 9 percent by 2013.

Despite the potential, the new systems face hurdles such as tightened emissions standards and negative perceptions about past diesels.
The E-320 Bluetec is on sale in 45 states, but not in California and four Northeast states with more stringent emissions rules: Massachusetts, Maine, New York and Vermont.

DaimlerChrysler is developing a second version of Bluetec, expected to be used on the R-, ML- and GL-Class as early as 2008, that would be more efficient and meet emission standards in all 50 states. The upgraded version involves the injection of a solution into the exhaust, causing the release of ammonia which converts up to 80 percent of nitrogen oxide into harmless emissions.

DaimlerChrysler said it has been in discussions with the California Air Resources Board and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency about the technology.

Thom said he was optimistic that the automaker may be able to sell the E-320 Bluetec and future models in California. He suggested DaimlerChrysler would make an announcement at the auto show in Los Angeles if it could "find the solution to bring this car to California."

Karen Caesar, a spokeswoman for the California board, said she could not discuss any motor vehicle involved in the certification process.

Simon Godwin, DaimlerChrysler's manager of regulatory affairs, said the automaker expects the EPA to soon release draft guidelines on the advanced Bluetec system. It would provide the regulatory framework for the system's performance and the availability of the solution, called AdBlue.
Godwin said the automaker has been working with oil companies, the auto repair industry and others to ensure the urea solution would be available for consumers to refill their vehicles. Mercedes-Benz dealers would also have the solution available for refills during routine maintenance.

John Millett, an EPA spokesman, said the agency will release guidance within the next month on the technology.

An official announcement was made @ the LA auto show...

Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen and Jeep(R) Launch BLUETEC Diesel Initiative

LOS ANGELES, CA -- On the eve of the Los Angeles Motor Show, DaimlerChrysler, AUDI and Volkswagen announced that they intend to establish the BLUETEC brand name as the designation for particularly clean, highly fuel-efficient passenger cars and SUVs with diesel engines. Under the shared concept of BLUETEC, each of the manufacturers involved will be working on their own technical systems for meeting the world's most stringent emission regulations.

The latest J.D. Power study, "Global Outlook For Diesel," predicts that the share of diesels among first-time registrations in North America will rise to over 15 percent by 2015. It is in the light of this development that Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volkswagen will be systematically expanding their ranges of diesel vehicles.

All three companies are convinced that up-to-date diesel propulsion systems play a major part in efficient and clean mobility. With their high torque, agility, economy and robustness they display all the qualities which American customers, especially, appreciate.

With their outstandingly efficient fuel consumption, which lies some 20 to 40 percent lower than that of comparable petrol engines, these particularly clean diesel engines now have the potential to comply with the toughest emission limits in the world. They combine ecology and economy with driving pleasure for the customer.

What is BLUETEC?

The name BLUETEC covers diesel engines with exhaust emission treatment systems which meet even the strictest emission regulations on the US market. The systems employed by BLUETEC serve in particular to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) -- the only constituent part of the exhaust gases which, due to the design of the diesel, inherently lies above the value for petrol engines. In this way it will in future also be possible to meet the strict limits imposed by the State of California.

Depending on the vehicle class concerned, various NOx treatment systems can be used. In one version, for instance, an oxidising catalytic converter and a particulate filter are combined with a further improved, particularly long-life NOx storage converter. Another way of cutting NOx emissions is even more effective. In this case for example AdBlue, a water-based additive, is injected into the exhaust gas. This causes ammonia to be released, which in turn reduces the nitrogen oxides almost completely to harmless nitrogen and water in a downstream SCR catalytic converter.

BLUETEC is a brand of DaimlerChrysler which is already being used by the corporation's Mercedes-Benz cars and commercial vehicles. In future the name BLUETEC will also stand for clean diesel engines from Audi, Volkswagen and Jeep(R) in the United States.

AUDI:
Audi stands for sportiness, progressiveness and high quality -- for "Vorsprung durch Technik". Audi currently makes the Audi A3, Audi A4 and Audi A4 Avant and the Audi S4 at its Ingolstadt plant, the Audi A6 and A6 Avant, Audi A8 and Audi RS 4 in Neckarsulm, and the TT Coupe and TT Roadster at AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft. in Gyor, Hungary. The Audi Q7 is built in Bratislava. The Audi product range is rounded off by the Audi A4 Cabriolet, which is made by Karman.

The new Audi R8, made by quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm, is the first super sports car in the Audi range. Audi stands for "Vorsprung durch Technik" (leadership by technology), and this guiding principle finds its expression in the company's products. Prime examples of this include the quattro full-time all-wheel-drive system, aluminium bodywork (Audi Space Frame in the Audi A8 and R8), the S tronic Direct Shift Gearbox featured in the Audi TT and Audi A3, and the advanced TDI and FSI engine technology. Audi is a pioneer in diesel technology -- both on the road and on the racetrack. The R10 TDI sports car was the first diesel ever to win the legendary "24 Hours of Le Mans" race and the ALMS Series in America. Audi will also be putting the world's most powerful diesel on the road, in the form of the Q7 V12 TDI, with an output of 500 horsepower and 1000 Newton metres of torque.

It appears that BMW are still uncertain on whether to supply diesel engines to the US, as they are asking customers to fill out surveys on the subject to see if its worthwhile.

Not exactly. They are bringing the diesels in US - sometimes during 2008 (see this official press release). Also with SCR technology, but not under BLUETEC name. According to my info no special name will be used, just a "d" / "sd" designations - as usual for BMW diesel models worldwide.
