RX-8 Mazda to recall nearly all RX-8s

The Mazda RX-8 is a sports car manufactured by Mazda between 2003 and 2012. It is the direct successor to the RX-7. Like its predecessors in the RX range, it is powered by a rotary Wankel engine. The RX-8 was available for the 2003 model year in most parts of the world.

Mazda to recall nearly all RX-8s

Mazda will recall all 2004, 2005, and many 2006 model year RX-8 sports cars to address an issue with the vehicle's unique rotary engine, according to trade publication Automotive News. The automaker is expected to officially announced the voluntary recall some time this week. Many engines will need to be replaced, according to the report. The move comes after the Japanese automaker came under fire from consumers over a number of serious problems with the engine. The issue involves damage to the catalyst resulting from oil leaks. Any engine that does not pass a vacuum test must be replaced.

A friend of mine has a University degree in car mechanics and he was in the market for a new car a few months ago. He wanted a cheap and fast car so when i asked him why he doesn't buy the RX8 he told me that rotary engines are problematic.

Oh well more Japanese quality myths bite the dust.

Hmm... I thought Mazda had gotten it all covered, especially after the critical acclaim it received for that engine in the RX-8.

Seriously. Has the rotary engine ever been made out to be a stalwart of flapless reliability?

Anyways, it's always funny when us GCF'ers pick on a Japanese brand for having reliability gaffes. All I can say is: pot, kettle, black.

.....wasn't the rotary engine a German invention?

No, seriously it hasn't...it was a cheap shot I know.

Come to think of it Mazda isn't the relibility standard among Japanese makes anyway, that is Toyota followed by Honda.

I wanna say Mercedes did one back in the 60's or 70's?

NSU, which started in business making sewing machines in 1873, was absorbed by Volkswagen in 1969 and merged with Audi to form Audi NSU. Historically, the best known NSU has become the 1967 Ro 80 luxury sedan, powered by a rotary engine. It was an incredibly advanced car for its time with a design that would not look out of place today. Alas, the unreliability of the Wankel engines and the cost of replacing them in customers' cars proved to be too much for the company. Only 37,000 Ro 80s were made before the car and the NSU name disappeared off the market in 1977.

Wow big suprise and most of all that most of the engines need to be replaced.

I'm not surprised. The rotary was almost left for dead because it wasn't that reliable, especially when it came to oil usage and oil seals, and this has nothing to do with German vs. Japanese. I guess Mazda wanted to persist, trading on their legendary RX-7 and their Le Mans victory.

Still, it's really going to put anyone else off using rotaries, not to mention quite possibly Mazda themselves.

I think it's a funny case of history striking once again. I'm somewhat enamored with the saga of the rotary engine, since it's just different. Sometimes different for differentiation's sake isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Still, with all that I remain an admirer of the RX-8. Wouldn't mind having one... so long as it's under warranty.
