Maybach 57/62 (W240/V240) Maybach 62 S Landaulet Concept

The Maybach 57 (W240) and 62 (V240) were the first automobile models of the Maybach brand since its revival by DaimlerChrysler AG (now Mercedes-Benz Group AG). The concept car and production models were based on the Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class. Both models had an "S" (Spezial) option, and additional Landaulet version for the 62 S. Production: April 2002 – February 2013, 3,321 produced.
^ well then Marcus, if we're talking about technical aspects and build ...then overall the Rolls wins.

I disagree with that. The Rolls having an aluminum space frame doesn't automatically mean it is superior. Just being around the 2 cars before the Maybach seemed the more solid of the two IMO. Its like the W140 only more so. Technical aspects maybe because it (Rolls) is more complex, but overall build I'd wouldn't agree.

^ Do you remember a few months ago someone posted a report which ranked the manufacturers in terms of technological advancement etc.?

BMW out-ranked Mercedes ...and Rolls-Royce out-ranked Maybach. I'm only stating the results.

Yeah I remember that doesn't mean it applies to these specific cars though. BMW definitely has an edge in engine development right now and chassis control systems, but MB still clearly has the lead in safety and related technology IMO.

^ Fair enough Marcus, I realize this is an argument I will never ever win with you ;)

There is no doubt about the wonderful build quality of Maybach -- I do agree with you on that.

Does it means that the cars are more advanced?

No, nobody can deny the fact that the W221 is far more advanced technologically, and also far better build and finished than the 7er.

This study refers to the manufacturung process, which means the productivity of the factories mainly!

Concerning the Maybach, I only wanted to point out the over-engineering of the Maybach that you don't find on the same level on the Rolls.

I never wanted to say that the Rolls is not good, or anything; as a package it is much better thought, much better adapted to the market, and much more emotionally appealing.

It is one of the very best cars ever, even if I don't like it at all it is only a matter of taste. However the Maybach is, from certain aspects, even better. Unfortunately, these aspects are not the aspects that make a car sell...

The problem imo, is that Mercedes only made this car because BMW did it. Benz did not want this car. But it was a matter of proud not to let BMW and VW alone in this market. So they did the Maybach, but not with their heart, not with enough budget or enthusiasm. So the engineers were told to build the better car in the world, but the rest of the team were not given enough time or budget...

They saw it from a very german point of view. They had a look at the Seraph/Arnage, laughed at the technical dinosaur, and made a technically perfect car. However, in their hurry and their unenthusiasm, they overlooked the emotional aspect of the car.

So the Maybach is longer, heavier, more powerful, has more TVs and wood and leather and equipments than any other car. But all this was not thoroughly designed, there is an obvious lack of emotion, sense of occasion...

So this is a fabulous car, there is only one thing is does not good: making you wanting it...And that is the only point that matters in that market...

The Rolls on the other side understood the market very very well. I see it as brash and vulgar, but that is precisely what the market wants...Sense of occasion, look-at-me effect. In our society of superficiality, everybody wants to be seen, and the understated Maybach is totally useless. Nobody cares its fabulous seats and insane interior space and comfort.

They had everything to mark history and remake the W100, but failed miserably because they did not really wanted this car...Did not knew if it was a Mercedes or a Maybach...and underestimated Rolls-Royce and BMW.
I only hope they learned that lesson for the next Maybach!

Speaking of which the biggest and most expensive of the 'Bachs made its debut here today:

Maybach made a big deal out of those tacky reclining seats but by far my favourite feature in the Maybach cabin is the wonderfully engineered folding picnic tables.

The Phantom is full of nice details ...the switches are all very nice. and the picnic tables cleverly conceal the LCD TV screens.

So in the Rolls you can't eat and watch TV at the same time! Unacceptable..lol!!!

My only real problem with the Rolls interior is the 1980's, too-thin steering wheel. Other than that the Rolls is definitely a huge step up and over the Maybach as far as interior asthetics go.

M

^ LOL ...good point about the table ... the Maybach is definitely more practical.

The Rolls is very 'glitzy' by comparison. I find some of the wood/leather colour combinations are too much for me.

If I am completely honest, I will tell you the Phantom is not really my taste ...but I do like it nonetheless.

The TV is very poorly made, you see little round black pieces, moving parts...it is not really beautiful I find.

But the interior has a lot more charm and lovely details than the Maybach.

What bothers me in the Maybach is the big heating furniture with all the grilles, really out of place, and then the mess between the seats, and that everything looks like plastic covered with leather.

In the Rolls everything looks more like massive wood or aluminium, however when you look better or open compatments you see that it is not massive and that there is plastic beneath a lot of pieces.

For me the Arnage clearly takes the cake. Even better work, even more authentic ambience. Everything IS massive, all pieces are fabulously oldschool, everything is delicate and tasteful. A marvel.

Oh yes the Arnage is still my choice in this segment too.

M

^ I do agree with you on this Amaury, the Phantom's "traditional craftsmanship" is only skin deep, the Bentley Arnage does feel more carefully made by hand. As, I have said before, I fear that the Arnage's replacement will lose much of this ....we'll have to wait and see.

This is where we all seem to agree, Arnage is stil the most attractive car in this class. :usa7uh:

Some move live shots:

It really makes me feel for Maybach because this car is really put together, all that effort and the market really isn't interested. A pity.

Mercedes-Maybach

In November 2014, Daimler announced the revival of the Maybach name as a sub-brand of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W222), positioned as an upscale version akin to the more sporty Mercedes-AMG sub-brand.
