MC12 Maserati MC12 Corsa


The Maserati MC12 (Tipo M144S) is a limited production two-seater sports car produced by Maserati from 2004 to 2005, to allow a racing variant to compete in the FIA GT Championship. The car entered production in 2004, with 25 cars produced. A further 25 were produced in 2005 after the FIA changed the rules and reduced the maximum length allowed. The second batch of 25 are 150mm shorter than the originals, making a total of 50 cars available for customers. With the addition of 12 cars produced for racing, a total of just 62 were ever produced. Maserati designed and built the car on the chassis of the Ferrari Enzo, but the final car is much larger and has a lower drag coefficient, along with being longer, wider and taller and has a sharper nose and smoother curves than the Enzo.

Yes, but Frank oversaw the entire design process.

C/D: You had a dream job and got to oversee the F430 and Maserati MC12. So why did you move to Fiat?
FS: It was like going from heaven to hell. Fiat was ready to crash, the company had had it. [Sergio] Marchionne had come in and sacked almost everybody, and I was basically summoned to be design director. I was like, “What have I done wrong?” They said nothing, you’ve just got to build a new car in 10 months and it’s got to be successful or no more Fiat. So we had a brilliant idea; we took the most successful product they had, the Panda, and ripped the body off and put another on. That was the new 500. "

Yes, the answer is very ambiguous... Some sites say Giugiaro, some Stephenson.

Italdesign's own website claim the project as theirs.....
 
After departing McLaren, it was left a mystery where Stephenson ended up. Originally, word was he was heading back to MINI, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I checked out his IG page for clues, alas nothing except him living the good life.
 
Pretty sweet. Looks like Maserati is offering drives in it. Can’t imagine how much that experience costs...

I find it absolutely comical that the MC12 is almost as long as a LWB S-class or 750LI, as wide as an American pickup, and as low as a Ford GT - all with no way to see out the back. That’s why no one drives them on the roads

The purpose of the MC12 in the first place was homologation, as Maserati at the time in 2004 wanted to go back into GT racing, specifically in the now-defunct GT1 class. I believe Maserati designed the MC12 to be a race car from the beginning, being a strong performer while fitting the rulebook of the class, and according to the statistics, it was a very successful car when it was racing.

If you look at it, the Maserati MC12 suits the principles of Ferrari better than the Enzo, which is building a race car first then homologate it into a road car! On a personal note, I like the Enzo more, even though I have seen neither in real life. On the other hand, the Maserati is much more exclusive, so maybe it'll be the more valuable future classic.
