a diesel M? Here's my response...
Look, I'm not a BMW hater, far from it, but if there's something wrong, I'm sure going to voice it. I've come to slowly accept that there's a tubocharged M5 on the way, I'm not pleased with it, but it could be worse. A diesel engine is the opposite of what M Motorsport is supposed to stand for...and that is a high revving, powerful engine with a chassis that's made to handle better than it lesser brethrens. A DIESEL engine does not have the the high-rev characterirstics of an M motor.
Now if BMW introduces the TriTurbo diesel as something else, i.e. 555 Tds, well, that's fine. In fact, the fabled TriTurbo diesel engine is something I've been waiting for with bated breath and am hoping it makes it Stateside. But slapping an ///M badge on this haphazardly is pure marketing bull%&@t! The M is about not making compromises, it's about the Mootorsport division puting something that's close to racecar-derived technology into a road-going car. Aspirating an engine is a compromise, but has been seen in racecar tech. Diesel is a compromise, which too has been seen in racecars, but in Audis and Peuguots, not BMWs.
Now, some may say I'm throwing a hissy-fit before anything has been said, but keep in mind that in this thread's first spot, Scott said that a diesel M is coming.
I'm all for progress and change but keep that in the mainstream line-up. BMW's philosophy has a lot of lee-way, especially with Efficent Dynamics leading the way. But M Motorsport's philosophy is much more principled and ought not to be fiddles around with too much. That philosophy made M special, now it's becoming dilute. What's there to make me aspire for an M if I can take in a mainstream Bimmer to aftermarket tuner and pretty much replicate the same performance that a comparable M car can produce?
Scott, BTW, I appreciate the updates. The vitriol is not directed at you, but more at the guys making the decision, so hope you don't take it too personally. Usually, I'm not that quick to anger, but a diesel M, to me, is the last straw. This is just ridiculous.
