From March 2006 issue so this is all info I have at the moment.

M5/AMG

1st Place 2nd Place

0-60: 4.5 4.4
0-100: 10 10.1
1/4th time: 12.9 12.7
1/4th speed: 114.9 113.6
45-65: 1.8 2.1

Lat Accel--g ave: .87 .90
600 FT slalom: 67.7 66.6
MPG: 12/18 14/20

Some quotes:

"One blast in the CLS55, and you'll feel like you've been there, done that. One sortie in the M5, and you'll want more."

"Comparing the best single laptimes, the M5 finished 24 carlengths ahead of the CLS55 after one lap."

I'm just the messenger so please dont shoot me this time :)

The acceleration times are a little bit slower than C&D times.

Car, 0-60 time, 0-100 time, 0-150 time, 1/4 mile time @ trapspeed

CLS55, 4.2, / 9.8 /, 24.9, / 12.6@114
E60 M5, 4.2, / 9.4 /, 20.7,/ 12.5@118

There's no doubt the M5 is faster, sportier, and will turn better lap times.
The fact is the CLS is also a very capable car and for me this is one of the few instances where style wins over substance not so much because the CLS is a good looking car, but because IMO the M5 is not. This pains me because I know the M5 is more capable and can be bought in stock at a slight discount from MSRP, while a CLS 55 with the performance pack and options is over $105,000.

funny, I still dont like how the CLS look like, to each his own I guess but to me, the M5 is the only choice here IMO. :eusa_danc

I wouldnt buy the CLS55 now, if I had the money. I would wait for the 63 AMG, but stil take the CLS55 over the bmw. Cause of the style, its more special and beautifull (its a matter of taste ofcourse, and Ive a very good taste :D ) and comfort is very important too for me. And dont say that there isnt a big difference between the CLS and 5!!!!!!

If the CLS55 didn't sound the way it does, I would've gone for the M5. Fantastic cars, both of them.

Both astounding cars and real close too...

I say the upgrades to the 55 engines are really worth it... for the prices, the hp cant be beat... under $10K with Kleeman gets you 100hp.

I'm not a huge fan of the CLS55 either. I don't like the head lights and the rear end looks fat and bloated to me. However, I do like the roof line although I still can't call a 4 door car a coupe.

It is interesting how some magazines consistently test lower than another magazine. Road & Track is another example.

I have no doubt that the M5 is a more fun car to drive. Can't say I'm overly excited by the looks of these cars either. Both have some nice features and some that are not so nice.
Even though the CLS55 is a 4-door coupe, you have to be rather supple to squeeze yourself in the back. If you happen to be older and stiffer and things hurt a bit more than they used to years and decades back, CLS is not the one to choose.

I dont know but I might be the only one but I would choose E55 over CLS55 without thinking twice. CLS is ugly (IMO) but E55 is so much cleaner and sexier to look at.

I would take the Mercedes CLS55 AMG over the new BMW M5 any day.

The new M5 is just too complicated.

CLS55 AMG in black for me please.

Well, I would do the same. I would rather take the E55 than CLS55.
In fact it must be close to 4 years ago now, I ordered an E55 and put a deposit down on it. I had a 2001 E320 and was just on fire about the new supercharged great looking sedan. But then I had to wait almost a year before it came out, and during that time I sobered up and started asking myself: What are you doing? I canned the order and got the new E320 instead and have been very happy with it. Took the difference of $30,000 and invested it in real-estate instead. But yes, the E55 is attractive.

I don't see what the big fuzz is all about. I knew the M5 would win before the testers even opened their doors. It's natural. The M5 is obviously the serious track performer here. No surprise. The CLS55 retains AMG values of a powerful cruising machine with Mercedes core values. No big deal.

I'd take the CLS since it looks so hot IMO. And they're not as small in the back as one may think. I've driven 3 of them and they're quite spacious at the rear, even with a tall passenger sitting infront. The thing about the CLS that get's you is the poor headspace at the rear. But the sexy design makes up for that. :eusa_danc

I dont find the sexiness, however I find it in E55, therefore E55 over CSL55 ;)

I agree cawimmer430, Give me the CLS55 anytime. I don`t need track numbers when I`m running to the grocery store and the bank after that.
The CLS55 is an excellent performer plus it`s got sex appeal thats unmatched
in it`s class! :t-roses:

It's not a surprise, the M5 wining the CLS again.

Despite of all that electronic rubbish, the new M5 is one Amazing car and Yes, I do concede it's a better handling car than the CLS.

I even like the looks of the new M5. In fact, I like the new M5. :)

But I like the CLS55 AMG more! :D

The trouble with the M5, is all that overcomplicated eletronics.

And that's why I maintain, that I still want a CLS55 AMG or maybe the upcoming CLS63 AMG in black!

Cawimmer430: So far I agree with everything you said. But I think the CLS makes more sense with a 5.5 Supercharged V8 under the bonnet instead of a Turbo Diesel. I'm not saying the diesel is bad, is just that for such a sexy looking car with a sporting character, the CLS is better suited with the V8 AMG engine. Leave the good 320CDI for a nice E-Class. ;)

GTA7.5: That is one HOT looking car! But please...tell me what the hell, that car is doing in a Ford dealer?! Please...tell me it's not for sale in a Ford dealership! :eusa_doh:

U must be kiding ,,, u dont find the sexiness , man ur blind lol
thats y i love the cls, its pure sexy , very sexy design ...

for me - CLS 55 anyday

I dont looking for the tracknumbers either but I want great driving experience and that can be found in M5 or ever better up, the M6. I also need place for 5 people (my carpool) and they sit better in the backseat in the M5 than in the CLS55.

my brother used to get allot of attention when he had the CLS 55 ,,, the e55 used to get some too but crazy how ppl used to look at the CLS ...

Just_me u really should test drive the CLS ,,, im sure ul change ur mind of the car ...
