Lutz says Saturn Vue "easily comparable" to BMW X5

General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said at the Paris Motor Show today the high-speed ride, steering and handling of the new Opel Antara is "easily comparable" to that of a BMW X5 and "better than an X3." He also said the Antara — which will be sold as the Saturn Vue in the United States — will match the X5 in terms of performance, except for the V8 version. Lutz also commented on GM's diesel engine plans for the United States, and the difficulties in attaining emissions certification. Both videos after the jump…

I would feel the same if he compared a Saturn to an Audi or Mercedes. Saturns are crap cars that come in last in every comparision test I see them in and he actually compared one to a BMW. Unreal.

this is mental. i had a chance to drive a vue for a few days and it was one bad experience. the front wheel drive version has severe torque steer and felt quite flimsy for a vehicle of that size at speeds over 100kph. one of the worst suv's i've tested.

Lutz: U.S. gov't should force gas prices up

General Motors vice chairman Bob Lutz said the U.S. government should gradually increase taxation on gasoline to force consumers into smaller, more efficient cars. "I'd say the best thing the (U.S.) government can do is to raise the gas tax by 10 or 15 cents a year until it reaches European levels," Mr. Lutz told the Wall Street Journal at the Paris Motor Show.

"In Europe people buy $30,000 Golfs," Lutz said. "People are willing to pay lots of money for extremely well equipped, fuel-efficient cars." Lutz said higher gas prices would help accelerate the transition to alternative fuels and cleaner forms of propulsion.

Lutz also says he thinks Americans have learned their lesson about buying fuel-thirsty vehicles, even if gas prices fall well below $2.00 later this year. "Three months from now if gas is $1.60 a gallon, people are not going to go rushing out to buy 400 horsepower SUVs," he said. "People now have understood the concept of volatility. People will hedge their bets."

Lutz the Yutz has lost it, Toyota has finally made him crack up. First he wants the feds to jack up gas prices when GM still depends on large trucks and Suvs for most of their sales. Plus they're going to launch a whole slew of new large pickups this fall, again their bread and butter!!!!!! Now he's saying that a Saturn is the equal of a X5? He has officially lost it. Even if it was, the current X5 is being replaced in a matter of weeks! Idiot!

I'm guessing high gas prices are here to stay.
Nevertheless the european automakers increased fuel eficiency and created the clean turbo diesels of today, not to mention good eficient wagons and hatchback vs. SUVs, due to high taxation on fuel.

Fuel consumption in W. Europe pretty much stagnated in the last 10 years, but exploded in the USA. At one point in the early 2000s, it was estimated that W.Europe saved vs. USA, about the equivalent of the oil consumption of China and India (ofcourse since then thing have changed).

I have to say considering America's history, the only thing that kept at bay, for a while at least, America's oil apetite was high oil prices. So that's why I agree with this gradual "europeanisation" of oil prices. But considering that the 2.5 are heavily dependent on gaz guzling SUVs and Pick-ups, I can't but wonder about the sanity of this.
