F1 Kubica 'seriously injured' in rally crash

Can't believe he's driving a rally car on an open circuit again. However it's wise given that his chances of driving an F1 car again are close to nill. There is more to motorsport than F1 and rally could be his refuge.

Kubica undergoes surgery to damaged elbow

Robert Kubica has undergone surgery in order to improve the mobility of his arm following his accident last year.
The Pole, who continues recovering from the horrific crash he was involved in during a rally at the start of last year, had surgery at the Pederzoli hospital at the end of last month, when parts of his elbow were replaced with two prosthesis.
According to the doctor in charge of the operation, that will allow Kubica to fully handle the steering wheel of a car.
The doctor also said that the Polish driver had been carrying out tests in a simulator prior to the operation.
"This way the driver will be able to fully handle the steering wheel, while before he was unable to rotate the palm down, so he was forced to release the steering wheel in order to turn left," head surgeon Ruggero Testoni was quoted as saying by Italian media.
"The surgery was preceded by a series of tests in a car simulator. It will take at least one month in order to stabilize."

So July/August will be it then, the definitive judgement time for Kubica and his potential return? He's got one hell of an insurance to be able to undergo all these highly specialised operations to mend an arm and hand that should have been amputated.

Kubica: Back in Formula 1? In 2014

Robert Kubica hopes to back in F1 in "2014" but concedes he doesn't know if his journey will take him there.
The Pole has been out of action since suffering life-threatening injuries when his Skoda car was impaled on a crash barrier during a rally in February last year.
Kubica underwent several operations to repair the damage, which included a partially severed right arm and multiple fractures to his right elbow, shoulder and leg.
Despite many predicting that his motor racing career was over, the 27-year-old returned to competition this weekend, driving a Subaru Impreza in the Ronde Gomitolo di Lana Rally in Italy.
Speaking to SkySport24's Antonio Boselli ahead of the event, Kubica revealed that he's hoping this weekend's outing is just another step towards an F1 return.
He told Boselli: "Back in Formula 1? In 2014 but I still don't know if my journey will take me there."
As for his rally this weekend, he said: "I wanted to experience the rush of the race, so now I will do this then the rally in San Martino then we will see."

Great news, he is back to motor racing and it seems he still has the hand eye co-ordination to drive fast.

Kubica wins Italian rally

Robert Kubica made a winning return to competitive motorsport at the Ronde Gomitolo di Lana in Italy on Sunday.
The former F1 driver, who has been out of action since his horrific rally accident in February last season, was back behind the wheel in Italy.
Driving a Subaru Impreza World Rally Car, Kubica won all four stages of the rally to claim the title by almost a minute over his nearest rival, Omar Bergo.
The Pole is hoping that the rally is just another step towards a possible return to Formula One.
"Being here is already a good step, but I would have preferred to be somewhere else," the 27-year-old told SkySport24 ahead of the event.
"I have still got a long road to travel and will probably never be at the same physical level as before but I don't intend to give up.
"The aim remains to return to Formula One and the next few months will tell me whether I can do it next year already or will have to wait until 2014."

Pirelli eyes Robert Kubica as 2013 tyre tester

Robert Kubica could be handed a route back to Formula 1 as Pirelli's test driver next year, the tyre company's motorsport director Paul Hembery has said.

Pirelli is set to require a replacement for Jaime Alguersuari, who looks poised to make a full-time return to F1 - potentially with Force India if one of its drivers leaves.

Although Kubica's hand is still some way off being recovered enough to allow him to drive an F1 car in anger, Hembery has admitted that once the Pole is ready then Pirelli would be more than willing to give him an opportunity.

A return to action with Pirelli would also make sense because the company is to keep the 2010 Renault test car it has used so far for another year. That is the same machine that Kubica raced two years ago.

Speaking about the possibility Hembery said: "We are more likely to work with Robert in rallying I guess, rather than F1, but we will see.

"I haven't spoken to Robert for some time and we are working on a few projects that might involve him, so it might well be a possibility.

"I don't know if he is able to do it at the moment. But he is that type of person if physically he could get back in, then maybe doing a year with us would put him in a good situation to come back in in 2014. It would be wonderful if we could do that.

"We want to continue our success level of helping drivers into F1. After an F1 drive, the Pirelli test deal has to be the best drive in the world."

Hembery says that with the 2014 technical regulations being so different, there is little point wasting time trying to secure a more up-to-date machine to replace the Renault.

"There is probably no point," he said. "If we are going to be testing next year for 2014, then that is a different challenge – and no car will be relevant for that. So we will probably see the Renault 2010 car just being heavily modified."

Just hear the voice of the driver...
Be careful on the road as you are not 1/1000000th as good as Robert Kubica and yet he almost died!!!!

I miss you, Robert! Be careful on your way back to F1!

Robert Kubica eyes more success after Rally di Como win

d3ca7bec5f06f1b1db6cd39f57d04c2f.webp

Robert Kubica hopes his maiden victory in a World Rally Car in Italy last weekend will lead to even greater success with the Citroen C4.
Kubica finished the 11-stage Como event half a minute clear of Felice Re's similar car, despite having to complete the rally with only rear brakes after a minor accident.
The Pole is making a tentative motorsport return in rallying, nearly two years on from suffering horrific injuries in a crash in Italy. He still hopes to rejoin the Formula 1 field eventually.
This weekend Kubica's comeback will step up a gear when he contests the Rallye du Var in France, where his opposition will include experienced former World Rally Championship and Intercontinental Rally Challenge frontrunner Freddy Loix in a Peugeot 307 WRC.
Kubica said Como had allowed him to fully get to grips with the Citroen and that he is now keen to contest increasingly demanding events to test his prowess.
"It's been a good adventure, a fine test ahead of the Rallye du Var," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"This rally has been very useful: first of all because it's very demanding, and also because it's allowed me to understand this Citroen almost completely. It's a car with incredible potential.
"I keep my feet on the ground. I need to test myself on the most demanding events.
"I'm a circuit guy, used to fighting for hundredths of seconds. If I'm behind on the road I get angry. However, I have the strength to react and fight until the end. Here Re, [Corrado] Fontana and [Paolo] Porro pushed me hard but in the end I did it.
"I won well, but to be honest I have to say that this Citroen C4 WRC is an exceptional car that will be able to give me more satisfaction, perhaps even bigger than today's."
