I remember Sabine Schmitz's Nurburgring van trial "to prove" Clarkson she could drive faster.

People fail too see that hes just a normal everyday bloke on a blokes car show driving blokes cars!

The new E is not shitty by any means. I just saw my first one today and I must say it's FAR better looking than the pictures.

Not singling anyone out at all... In fact I agree with some of your views. I just find the people who rubbish him for this review because it is negative and yet praise him for his positive review of the Mercedes CL quite hypocritical.

That's true, any era E-Class is certainly not for him.

However this one does to especially rub him the wrong way, as he seems to see it as the end of styling innovation from M-B, and "the demise" as he basically puts it, of the M-B mid-size saloon (or did he just meet mid-size saloon's in general)?

I guess I just like it because he tells it like it is, and his dismay at the way the new E looks, is similar to have I've felt about it.

If he couldn't turn it off, it's on purpose and to highlight the complexity of the car.
Clarkson may be funny, may have excessive opinions. But if you take what he says with a pinch of salt, you realize he's mostly right about the essence of the car he testdrove.

I'm sorry, but for me he IS brilliant. I don't take him too seriously, because that's the way he works, but on the bottom line he's quite spot one.

That said, he was never an E-Class guy. And I feel the same, all these smart nannies will be as annoying as it gets.

I already want to kill any American car that beeps when the door's open and the key's in the ignition, and have murder ideas when the car's beeping because it thinks someone doesn't wear its belt...

Who do you think was behind the success of the Top Gear brand? Do you know he turned the show around into an international success being broadcast into 100 countries the world over?

Anti Mercedes Benz? Erm, people, the man has owned many Mercedes Benzes and is considered a firm admirer. How many of you have watched his brilliant review of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series. Not a critical word spoken. And, justifiably so...

So he's definitely not anti Mercedes Benz.

There's much that is interesting about the man. The best thing is that he channelled his passion for motoring into a number of significant business initiatives. Did you know that he founded the Motoring Press Agency in order to conduct road tests and write articles on cars? This lead to him writing for Performance Car and we all know where that ended up: EVO. This was back in 1984. When I was 12. And most of you weren't born.

So, in his senility, Clarkson will have forgotten stuff about cars that everyone of us here still has to learn. Together with the late LJK Setright, I consider him the greatest motoring scribe ever.

...and I think his bank balance speaks for itself.

I don't disagree with you about Clarkson, but the idea that his virtues are evidenced by 1) his popularity, 2) his age, and 3) his wealth seems a little thin. There are many popular nimwits, many experienced dickheads and many undeserving wealthy.

I don't disagree with this.

As a whole post however, I feel that I have covered enough content for him to appear virtuous as a result of 1) his business acumen, 2) his knowledge on cars 3) his financial success as a result of the aforementioned.

I hope this fattens the idea up appropriately.

Yea he is an idiot. I'm sure someone told him he praises MB to much so now he dumps on the SL65AMG and the new E-class...go figure.

That is why I constantly tell people in this forum, do believe what you hear. I don't care how many cars these people have tested, it all comes down to their opinion. Now in some cases people do actually give the cars tested a fair chance, but he is busy trying to please someone.

Now I have seen the car in person and I like it better then the pictures I have seen. On the other hand, it is not my favorite Mercedes-Benz. Yes, IMO it is boxy and like Jeremy, I don't like the crease on the wheel arch. On the other hand seems like he is just bad mouthing it for no reasonable purpose but to stir up unecessary emotions. I haven't driven the XF, but I have driven the 5 series. It is a nice car, but I highly doubt it is better then the all new e-class and hopefully I will test drive it soon. Now design wise, I do prefer the XF.

Honestly this guy is a jerk! I don't care if he is praising MB or being negative towards them. He always is beating around the bush and lacks substance. It's always nice to see what others are saying about a car, but sometimes you gotta know what's trash and what's good reading material.

Best thing to do is test drive it and prove him wrong.

Maybe idiot is a strong word. I am sure he has an education and is in no way retarded. On the other hand he does what is "expected" of him. He can change from left to right in a heartbeat. IMO his opinion is useless and I will never purchase a car based on his "ability to entertain". In reading the article the man constantly talks about the wheel arch. And to talk about a 382hp engine being boring...its stupidity at best. It's like me driving an M5 saying "Oh it is not fast enough". Come on...

So, logically, his opinion is based on a great deal of personal experience. Experience and knowledge lend weight and credibility to opinion. It's how Clarkson became an entertaining car journalist in exactly the same way as a great man like Nelson Mandela becomes leader of the ANC.

Absolutely correct. But that's the whole thing with him - he intentionally says things about cars that are designed for people not to take him too seriously. It's called tongue-in-cheek. Humour.

Notice how he uses the opinions of Hammond (the feisty, sporty type) and May (the detailed, dour, engineering oriented type) to juxtapose his. It's so obvious that all along he's saying "You don't have to take my word for it."

Again, that's the whole point, he's talking about cars - the emotion, joy and passion behind them. It's not a physics lecture in thermodynamic efficiency. All discussion beyond the pure science of motoring takes place at an emotional, subjective level.

In my book he serves no purpose and is a useless individual.

His initiatives have resulted in jobs for hundreds of people in the journalism and broadcasting fields. It's a worthy achievement in its own right.
