911 Is Porsche Preparing Us for a 911 Off-Road Concept with this Video?

The Porsche 911 model series (pronounced Nine Eleven or in German: Neunelf) is a family of German two-door, high performance rear-engine sports cars, introduced in September 1964 by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany.

Shortly after rumors emerged about Porsche preparing a 911 Safari concept for the Beijing Auto Show, the sports car manufacturer has released a video that covers the 911’s off-road exploits.
Called “Porsche 911’s Alter Ego”, the video features seven-time Pikes Peak champion Jeff Zwart talking about the other side of the 911’s personality – rallying and off-roading.

The video includes footage from Zwart’s Pikes Peak runs in a 911, as well as him driving the Porsche Museum’s Paris-Dakar winning Type 953, which is the all-wheel-drive 911 precursor to the 959 supercar.

So why is Porsche showing this now? They could be simply reminiscing about the Porsche 911’s off-road adventures, but knowing that the Germans don’t usually do random things, the video may be a part of the build-up to the rumored 911 Safari concept.

We’ll see if that’s the case in April, when the Beijing Auto Show opens its gates.

This could be really interessting, i hope they won't make another "sporty suv" out of that sexy machine.

Who would drive his 100k+ PV on the surface this car is intended to be driven!?
It would be great but I don't see why anyone would need such a car. Maybe it's going to be stripped down and offered as a tool for amateur rally racing? I doubt it...

It's rally and Pikes Peak capable then it is intended to be driven off road. The Cayenne Turbo, Range Rover and G-Class are over 100k too but yet are taken off road by some owners. The photoshop above convinces me that the idea of a 4x4 991 isn't too crazy. People would go nuts for it.

Off-road in a SUV at really low speed(like it should be) is something completely different than a rally at high speeds. You can forget about your paint job and suspension... and both won't be cheap to fix/replace.
The only practical use of such a concept would be that you can go over speed bumps without tears in your eyes every single time :D

Wouldn't low speed off-roading be easier in a a 911 because of low centre of gravity?

Low speed off-roading in a 911? Nah, that's not the idea of a 911 and there's no fun in doing so. Let alone the ground clearance... which won't be good enough :)
It's all about rally... and all about being rich enough to do it with a road legal 911. It would be incredibly cool to own such a car but there's no point in buying one unless you are a millionaire. Why not just get a regular 911 if you are going to drive the car on-road(as any sane person excl. millionaires)
