Interview with BMWNA M Manager Matt Russell

Zafiro

Supreme Roadmaster
BMWNA M Manager Matt Russell:

Will the M6 models have more power than the M5?
These cars these days are so powerful and underrated that we’re not going to do 3 here, 4 there, 5 here. We call it 560(hp); it's a nice round number, we like it.

Too true, it's not like someone will feel short changed by 'only' having 560hp. :D

I remember a dynotest on the new M5 and it showed the car had more power than BMW claimed. BMW can very well give the M6 more power but in the pressrelease it will say 560 hp :)

Yeah I know but my point was that when you're already up there with 560hp the thing could see off most things people regard as supercars. If its got 560hp, 570hp or 580hp I don't think anyone would notice the difference without the use of a stopwatch.

I knew what you meant ;)

Realistically, at that strata of power, a difference in 10 bhp's is really a wash. But when it comes to a marketing point of view, I could see why they'd want to offer that differentiation, especially if there's going to be a that much of a difference in price. Customers at that level want to feel justified in their mind they got the best of the best, even though in real-world situation it makes very little difference. Call me cynical, but at that price-point I think there are alot customers, especially non-enthusiasts, who like to have their egos stroked.
