Re: Best interior: E Class / 5 Series / A6
5er interior for me please...
This is, of course, one of those discussions that is fraught with emotional subjectivity and personal preference as Enilab had pointed out earlier. There is no right or wrong answer, rather, a means by which to describe the emotional appeal from a personal perspective of each one of these interiors.
The E-Class interior presents a more mature image courtesy of styling that it closely shares with the CLS. It's a little too classical, too Baroque for my more modern, minimalistic tastes. It's functional, luxurious and elegant for sure but not all that sporting either, even in AMG fettled guise.
The A6 interior is one that just doesn't appeal to me from a visual stimuli point of view. I'm in the same boat as Enilab when it comes to the opinion that the A6' interior is conservative and even a little, erm (now don't flame me for this), backward looking. The centre console clutter is very typical of mid 90's approach and the visual interplay between the vents and switchgear comes across as haphazard. In my humble opinion of course... I'm not even going to mention the fact that the profile curve that extends from the instrument cluster cowling, past the MMI screen and down the centre console is so reminiscent of 90's Japanese interior styling, see the Nissan Sentra/Sunny and Subaru Legacy as examples. Oops, I guess I did just mention it!
I can see why the BMW interior isn't a favourite. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination with certain, highly visible panels not coming across as the nth word in quality. That said, the 5er interior appeals to me as the most solid, cohesive whole. I love the relationship and interplay of the curved lines in this interior, some of them briefly parallel before giving way to other, juxtaposed lines. The horizontally partitioned styling theme is a fresh departure from the centre console centric designs of previous german cars. I also like the way that the top curve running over the I-Drive cowling is mirrored by the bottom curve below the compact disc slots. In my eyes, very creative and engaging. All in all, I feel that the BMW interior represents the most successful integration of form, switchgear, vents, slots and displays of the three competitors presented.
