i9 in 2016?

BMW i9 Approved by the Board of Management for 2016 Production

Thousands of rumors about a possible M8 supercar or a new 8 Series started going around the internet once the world realized that BMW will be celebrating its centenary in 2016. However, none of them were confirmed by the company itself though, at least not officially.

Now, insider sources claim that a BMW supercar will finally come to life in 2016, as the board approved its construction this week. Being based on the same technology implemented on the i8, the new car will be called i9 and it’s supposed to be a true successor to the only supercar ever made by the Munich-based company, the M1.

The layout will be similar to the one used on the i8, with a plug-in hybrid setup but on a different scale. The Life and Drive Modules will be kept but with different sizes. the Life module, encompassing the cabin and the chassis, will be made of aluminum while the body will be made exclusively out of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP).

Trademark 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine to be used

As for the specs, prepare to be blown away. The current sports car is using a B38 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged plant on the rear axle and an electric motor un front. The i9, on the other hand, will be using the new-gen B58 3-liter 6-cylinder plant that is supposed to replace the current N55 units.

The power output could very well reach into 350 HP territory without it being an M product. At the same time, the electric motor will also be upgraded to offer more than the 131 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque the i8 unit makes. Most likely, the output will be closer to the one of the i3, probably around 170 HP.

Combined, the two should offer at least around 550 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, numbers close to what the F10 M5 is making. However, the weight should be closer to 1,500 kg (3,300 lbs) instead of 2 tons. All-wheel drive and a drag coefficient of around 0.26 will turn this into a proper supercar if not even a hypercar. Since the i8 sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds, imagine what this thing could do. It will probably be the fastest car the Bavarians ever made.

Production is set to begin on the year BMW is celebrating its centenary, 2016. That means we’ll get to see the concept behind it next year, either at Geneva or Frankfurt.

Awesome combination will make a great noise and also be crazy quick as well as very environment friendly! Can't wait for BMW to bring this car out, it's about time they bring out a Supercar to rival Mercedes, Audi and Porsche

This kind of where it gets interesting and follows through with my response on the TT Sportback.
One such strategy suggests but not confirms the Roadsters Z1-Z3-Z5 etc , Coupes as Z2-Z4-Z6 etc... But there is further scope for continuation of the series and creating another segment.

So, we are getting the i9, a new M supercar and a top tier Z roadster?

Hmm - now the segment seems to get crowded ;)
I mean, first the denial to deliver a true sportscar ... and now planning to come out with a 550hp+ I9 and some 600/700hp M supercar is ... at least surprising???

I would only bet on i9 for now. M supercar...not the first time the designers showed sketches and scale models to the BMW board but the business case was tougher to make.

For now, enjoy the M2!

I would expect a new M Supercar to feature the new G80 M5 V8 with 650 PS, and one or two electric engines with another 250 PS. That is a proper supercar. I just doubt BMW has the balls.

The new i9 is more likely and it should be a damn sportscar too. I would imagine the new I6 to have 370 PS and the electric engine to have more than 200 PS. That should mean the same amount of power than the next M5 with lower fuel consumption than the M3.

I would also expct it to have a LaFerrari-like CF monocoque.

But like you say, they won't do it. Instead we get something green from BMW i

It´s a pitty because the tech is there. They can just upgrade the i9 like the i9 is a beefed up i8. They can use the chassis they already have for the i8, and the engine they are working on for the new M5 and even ask Toyota for a more powerful electric engine if they need too.

No excuses this time. An M supercar is a fair demand.

Well the new CEO was one of the creative team behind the R8 originally so there is expertise and experience.
Its well known that BMWi and BMW M are sub-brands or bookends to BMW and that they must feature their own products.

Never say never , Klier. The i8 is in BMWs terms around 2-3 years old. The i8 was what was available to do at that point in time. We are now at a level of application that possibilities have become greater , more cost effective and our competitors have become even more concerned. BMW continue to push ahead and another industry is on the verge of signing up to buy CFRP as the aeronautics and marine industry already has.
BMW are on track to recuperate its initial investment.

"It will outperform any other BMW built before, ever."
