Cornering Kingpin

Days after the iPhone 5 was announced, Samsung is reportedly prepared to roll out a new version of its Samsung Galaxy S, the phone that has established itself as Apple's chief smartphone rival. The Samsung Galaxy S4 will be introduced in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, according to The Korea Times. The report from the Times, the oldest English-language newspaper in South Korea, where Samsung is based, cites unnamed company officials and parts suppliers in the region. Among the Galaxy S4's features will be a 5-inch screen, slightly larger than the display on the popular Galaxy S III and a full inch bigger than the iPhone 5, the report said. It will have more powerful hardware and software and will "definitely use" 4G LTE networks, a parts supplier told the paper. Phones running Google's Android operating system have been outselling the iPhone for some time. But that's a fragmented field that includes dozens of phones of varying quality. No single handset has established itself as a serious rival to Apple's phone.

The Galaxy S III has made perhaps the best claim. Last month, the company announced it had sold more than 20 million units in three months, making September the first month since the release of the iPhone 4S that it wasn't the world's top-selling smartphone. Snap reviews of the iPhone 5 have been somewhat mixed, at least among the tech media. Many who got a hands-on demo at Apple's Wednesday announcement praised its slimmer, lighter design, bigger display and faster processor. Others said the device failed to produce groundbreaking advances at a moment when Apple, perhaps for the first time ever, finds itself needing to catch up with features available on other phones. Customer response, however, has been overwhelming. Pre-orders of the iPhone 5 "sold out" almost instantly (an admittedly arbitrary feat considering Apple controls the supply), with orders topping 2 million in the first 24 hours. That's double the 1 million for last year's iPhone 4S in the same time period.

The phone hits stores Friday in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the United Kingdom. It rolls out in 22 other countries on September 28. The S4's release would mark Samsung's biggest salvo since a federal court in California ruled that Samsung violated multiple Apple patents in the release of its own products. After the ruling, Apple asked the court to add the Galaxy S III to the list of products that are in violation.

The case was just one of roughly 50 patent disputes in different countries. Some of the other courts have ruled in favor of Samsung. According to the South Korean news report, Samsung is working with U.S. carriers on modified designs the company said will eliminate any questions about patents. The report said Samsung plans to fire back in another way, too. Samsung is asking Apple to pay more for the processors it produces at an Austin, Texas, plant and is promoting itself as "the only firm that can guarantee on-time delivery, output commitment and better pricing for mobile application processors," one executive told The Korea Times.

Samsung are getting their cards shown heavily now. They are ALL OVER Apple's balls. First they release ANOTHER set of anti-Apple adds, where they openly show their obsession and jealousy of Apple (horrible marketing approach if they even want to be considered remotely high in brand cachet), then they stage this "announcement" on the same day. Pathetic.

All this will do is make GSIII potential buyers hold off, as February is too soon for them to even show a new phone, seeing as to how it feels like the GSIII didn't come out so long ago.

Report is false, the new nexus will be released first before the new s4. There is no way Samsung will cut the life cycle of the s3 by a third especially when the phone is still very competitive

Samsung is making great products, let us not pretend otherwise. It is interesting to note, though, that the life cycle for their phones are shorter than Apple's. Apple will introduce a new phone every year like clockwork. Samsung seems to be trying to up every single Apple release.

The report seems to be true I think, and it apparently comes from a Korean paper.

IF it is true, then I think it's a big mistake by Samsung, as it pretty much says they've thrown the towel in regarding the GSIII being competitive to consumers (to buy, not specs), and will hand Holiday Season over to Apple as the "new iPhone" becomes even more-so desirable than the "soon to be replaced GSIII".

Couple that with their new iPhone-obsessed advertisements, the big Court loss, and they're shooting themselves in the foot.

What Samsung need to realize is that all these extra specs that the average consumer knows nothing about nor even uses, aren't as important "to the average consumer" as a high quality form factor. IMO if they want to truly steal away the mass iPhone buyer, they need to start with Apple's "luxury item" feel, high quality materials, solid fit, refined finish, etc. For all the specs of the GSIII, you hear time and time again people go to touch it, and immediately remark "cheap plastic". It's like a Mercedes E-Class VS Hyundai Genesis. Hyundai is bigger, more specs, better on paper.... but when you feel them, look at them, sit in them, you notice one is done with a far higher level of refinement and precision giving a nicer holistic experience. Hence, the E-Class outsells the Genesis handily.

Im still sticking to GalaxyIII. It still just as good as the new Iphone 5, besides GIII is already big enough. But if the rumour is true then it mean GIII is going to be cheaper.

Not sure if Samsung has confirmed this report, but it seems to be all over the internet.

It makes sense for the Samsung Galaxy S4 to come out sooner since Apple has been begging the court to get the GSIII off the market. They might as well get a new one that doesn't have anything Apple patent related some Apple can stop moaning to the courts about them.

Only issue is this could hurt GSIII now for anyone looking to get it. I know I'm thinking twice about getting it if the new one comes out that soon.

Some say Samsung is like a Hyundai, I will disagree, Samsung is a genuine technical leader. I don't mind if the S4 arrives next March, if it has all the latest Samsung developments.

Samsung Announces Production of Industry's First 2GB LPDDR3 Mobile Memory, Using 30nm-class Technology
SEOUL, South Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in advanced semiconductor technology solutions, has begun mass producing the industry's first two gigabyte (GB), low power double-data-rate 3 (LPDDR3) memory, using 30 nanometer (nm) class* technology, for next-generation mobile devices.
"We will embrace greater technical cooperation with industry leading mobile device makers, as we continue to provide timely next-generation memory solutions like 2GB LPDDR3 DRAM, in helping to accelerate growth of the mobile memory market"
Samsung started mass production of the industry's most advanced mobile DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chip, only 10 months after it began producing the industry's first 30nm-class based 2GB LPDDR2 memory in October, 2011. The new LPDDR3, which marks the first time a 2GB LPDDR3 density is available in one space-saving package, utilizes four LPDDR3 chips stacked together. LPDDR3 is needed for fast processors, high resolution displays and 3D graphics in tablets and smartphones.
"We will embrace greater technical cooperation with industry leading mobile device makers, as we continue to provide timely next-generation memory solutions like 2GB LPDDR3 DRAM, in helping to accelerate growth of the mobile memory market," said Wanhoon Hong, executive vice president, Memory Sales & Marketing, Samsung Electronics. "Furthermore, with this rapid introduction of 2GB LPDDR3, we are moving very assertively to expand our global leadership on the premium side of our extensive memory portfolio."
The new 2GB LPDDR3 DRAM can transfer data at up to 1600 megabits per second (Mbps) per pin, which is approximately 50 percent faster than a LPDDR2 DRAM. And on the package level, it provides a data transmission rate up to 12.8 gigabytes per second (GB/s), which will enable playing of full HD video content in real-time on smartphones and tablets. The high data transfer rates allows LPDDR3 to exceed support for full HD video payback on screens exceeding the current market available four-inch measurement and enable real-time viewing without downloading the content for the full HD visual experience.
By providing an early extensive global supply of LPDDR3 DRAM to smartphone and tablet manufacturers, Samsung expects to see a significant increase in the adoption of 2GB mobile DRAM.

So the already hudge Galaxy S3 is going to become even hudger.

It's ridiculous. "Everything old is new again". Apple are sticking to their approach that smaller/lighter is innovation/the future, yet without sacrificing usability and "Luxury", functionality, etc, while Samsung are intent on bringing back the brick phones from the 90's. 5" screen is practically a Tablet, how can you fit that in your pocket unless you're wearing baggy a$$ pants?

I have a feeling that Samsung didn't intend for this news to get out, but it did. IF they did, then they're letting their jealous obsession with Apple muddle up their vision. First those stupid ads that are getting mocked all over the internet (that falsely make the GSII look better than the iPhone 5 by using some pointless features of the GS and leaving out a ton from iPhone, not to mention, leaving out the iPhone's superior camera, and putting in hilariously amateur stuff like "Different Cable" (worded that way), now this.

Not only do Samsung phones have horrible resale value, while iPhone's pretty much hold their values rock-solid, but a new Samsung coming out in Feb means that the GSIII is already old news. It's too long away to hold off on buying a phone completely, but way too soon for anyone looking to get a Galaxy (it's just over 4 months away).

Edit: Also, I bet they're pushing up the GS4 release because they realized that it needs more time to shine out of the iPhone's shadow/spotlight. The GSIII just finally eclipsed the iPhone 4S in sales only last month.... now, iPhone 5 is back to crushing Galaxy sales. Samsung released the GSIII still too close to iPhone 5 I feel like.

I don't see the point to get G4 (unless you want the latest) when GIII is already I darn good phone. G3 already fulfill my needs and even more.

Also, the debate Iphone vs Samsung reminds my of carfanboys on this forum ;)
Give me one good reason why I should get a G4 or Iphone 5 when there already is G3?

You guys are talking about this rumor like it has been officially confirmed by Samsung. Like I said before, the chances are Samsung/Google will release a new version of their Nexus first before the S4.

Samsung denies Galaxy S4 report

A day after reports that Samsung plans to announce a follow up to its popular Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone in February, the Korean company has taken to Twitter to deny them. The Samsung Galaxy S4, a new iteration of the phone that has established itself as the chief rival to Apple's iPhone, will be introduced in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, according to The Korea Times. A day after that report surfaced, though, Samsung took to its Korean Twitter account to deny it. "Please note that some media reported speculation that the Galaxy S's subsequent models will be released," the tweet read in Korean, calling the report "a simple rumor [that] is not true."

The report from the Times, the oldest English-language newspaper in South Korea, cites unnamed company officials and parts suppliers in the region. Sounds like gorilla marketing by Sammy, to try every desperate measure they can to fend off iPhone hype. I doubt very much that the "leak" wasn't controlled, and the "rebuttle" unplanned. The way these guys are obsessed with and concentrating on Apple so closely, I wouldn't put it past them in a second.

Or maybe you are being far too cynical, rumors about new phones happens all the time, whether it is on android phone or apple.

Nahh, I doubt that. Samsung deserves the cynicism. Have you see their latest ads? I've never seen anything so immature and childish. At least Apple's "Mac VS PC" ads were classy, humorous, elegant. These are just vulgar. Wait until they re-release their "Apple Store" commercials as well.

KA didnt know you were such Apple fantatic ;) I've been working with apple products for many years but I dont find Apple to be some extraterrestrial product sent from Yodastic on planet 'Superior'. LOL.

I still need to know why I should get a G4 or Iphone 5 when there already is G3?
