Hennessey is most widely recognized for its Viper Venom series of cars, highly modified versions of the Dodge Viper developing up to 1,000hp in some guises. The most powerful model even beat the Bugatti Veyron in a sprint to 200mph during a recent shoot-out conducted by Road & Track. With credentials like that under its belt, Hennessey is now planning to build a direct rival to super exotics like the Veyron by developing a new mid-engined supercar using its 1,000hp twin-turbo V10 engine from the Viper Venom.

This teaser sketch was revealed during a recent video interview with Hennessey founder John Hennessey, which you can view by clicking here. Hennessey describes the car as having the power of the Viper Venom but weighing 363kg (800lbs) less. The engine would be mounted up back with drive sent to the rear wheels via a sequential gearbox. The car would also feature a very low coefficient of drag and the first concept version is scheduled to be unveiled in the near future.

Hennessey has finally revealed official details about its upcoming Venom GT supercar concept, including this teaser shot whose front end shares a striking resemblance with the Lotus Elise. Penned by Brit designer Steve Everitt, the Venom GT will feature the Viper Venom’s 1,000hp twin-turbo V10 engine and a light weight mid-engine chassis weighing less than 1,225kg. Power will be sent through to the rear wheels via a 6-speed transmission or optional sequential gearbox. This means the final version will have a power to weight ratio of just 1.225kg per hp, which Hennessey claims will see the car reach 100km/h from rest in just 2.5 seconds and up to 300km/h in around 14 seconds.

Company founder, John Hennessey, is careful to point out that the Venom GT is not being built as a “Veyron Slayer”. He boasts that unlike the Veyron, which he described as “an ultra fast and ultra luxurious grand touring car that also happens to be quicker and faster than any other road car,” the Venom GT “will be a much more engaging sports car to drive by challenging the driver with 1000+hp in a chassis that is nearly 680kg lighter.”

The car still hasn’t been given the green light but initial interest has been strong. According to Hennessey, there have already been several orders for the car including some from existing Venom 1000 Twin Turbo clients. There are currently plans for two separate concepts, the first of which could be shown to the public in 2009. If there is enough demand production will start at the company’s Lonestar Motorsports Park facility just outside of Houston. Looks like an Elise with vampire fangs crossed with a CGT at the rear. And that's not a bad thing.

Press Release

HOUSTON, TEXAS - Hennessey Performance Engineering today announced that it is introducing the company's first concept car - The Venom GT.

Penned by British auto designer, Steve Everitt, the Venom GT would incorporate Hennessey's potent Venom 1000 Twin Turbo Viper V10 powerplant into a light weight mid-engine chassis weighing "under 2,700 lbs". Power would be run through a 6-speed transmission or optional sequential gearbox.

With a power to weight ratio of just 2.7 lbs per bhp Hennessey estimates that the Venom GT could attain 0 to 100 km/h times in less than 2.5 sec. and a 0-300 km/h time of around 14 seconds. Company founder, John Hennessey, is careful to point out that the Venom GT is not being built as a 'Veyron Slayer'. Hennessey point out, saying, 'The Veyron is an ultra fast and ultra luxurious grand touring car which also happens to be quicker and faster than any other road car, except for our Venom 1000 Twin Turbo SRT which beat the Veyron earlier this year from 0-200 mph. The Venom GT will be a much more engaging sports car to drive by challenging the driver with 1000+ HP in a chassis that is nearly 1500 lbs lighter than the Veyron.'

Hennessey said, 'The company already has existing Venom 1000 Twin Turbo clients interested in ordering the lighter, mid-engined Venom GT. "Right now are taking a serious look at building 2 concept cars that could be shown to the public sometime in 2009. If there is enough demand we may consider doing a very limited production run of the Venom GT.'

If the Venom GT goes into production, it would be built at the company's facility at Lonestar Motorsports Park which is located just west of Houston, Texas.

More details are starting to emerge surrounding Hennessey’s upcoming supercar including this latest image of the car’s rear. We already now that its powertrain will be based on the 1,000hp (745kW) twin-turbo 8.5L V10 unit from Hennessey’s Dodge Viper Venom, but according to the maker’s website there’ll be an optional kit with 1,200hp (895kW) all up. If you need to know, there’ll be 1490Nm (1,100lb-ft) of torque available as well.

With a final kerb weight of only 1,225kg, expect to see several acceleration records fall, assuming all that power can be put to the ground. Hennessey claims will see the car reach 100km/h from rest in just 2.5 seconds and up to 300km/h in around 14 seconds. Top speed is a claimed 421km/h (260mph).

The car will feature a mid-engine, rear-drive layout with seating for two. A conventional six-speed manual will come as standard but a sequential six-speed version will also be offered. Brakes will consist of 14in carbon rotors with six-piston calipers up front and four-pot units in the back. The coefficient of drag will be 0.39cd with the rear wing fully extended.
If produced, the car will also be offered in RHD and come with driving instructions to ensure customers will be able to make the most of the thousand-plus horses. Hennessey will even throw in a matching luggage set.

There are currently plans for two separate concepts, the first of which could be shown to the public in 2009. If there is enough demand production will start at the company’s Lonestar Motorsports Park facility just outside of Houston.
