Videos GTboard video: BMW M3 F80 DKG vs Audi R8 4,2 6-speed manual

The R8 with the 4.2L V8 is simply underpowered now compared to many sports (or "sporty") cars.

That M3 annihilated the R8, totally left it in the dust!!:D:cry::ROFLMAO::hungover:

Has been so since the day it launched.
R8 V8 is a joke. E92 M3 is better.

The R8 V8 actually has a higher power/weight ratio than the E92 M3. According to official figures that is. 263hp/tonne is hardly lacking, even compared to other contemporary sports cars.

M3 (E92)
420hp
1,655kg
254hp/tonne

R8 4.2 FSI
430hp
1,635kg
263hp/tonne

M3 (F80) M DCT
431hp
1,635kg
264hp/tonne

What is probably the reality is that a) the M3 is underrated in terms of power, and the R8 is overated. Certainly if the reports of the B7 RS 4 are anything to go by. And b) in this video the R8 may have been in the wrong gear. With the M3 and all that torque, it's not as crucial. AND, the M3 was using the M DCT gearbox. The R8 was manual.

It was utterly destroyed in this video, and although it still would have been beaten, I don't think it would normally be such an annihilation.

Very close. Above 80-100mph it's all about sheer grunt and aerodynamics. The fact that the M3 starts to pull away from the more aerodynamic R8 suggests the ACTUAL hp in the M3 is more than the R8.

The S65 is one hell of an engine, that's for sure.

That was a close race but higher speeds surprisingly the M3 pulled away but once they hit 250km/h the Audi should eventually catch up and overtake the M3 as it's not restricted to 250km/h! One thing for sure though that R8 looked stunning what a beautiful car!

And the extra loss of power from the AWD.

R8 V8 is far from being a joke. It was a good match for 997 when it came out. Even now, the DCT version can hang with the 991S. And I would still pick it over a one too - it checks all the right boxes - high revving NA V8, mid engine, available with a manual. The only '-' in my book is the attention grabbing looks.

Quoting myself, I thought I'd add the relevant Porsche to compare data with the R8 4.2.

911 Carrera 4S (991)
400hp
1,520kg
263hp/tonne

So without wishing to be confrontational @PC Valkyrie, do you still think the R8 4.2 is underpowered compared to modern day sports cars? Genuine question.

Torque rules in these conditions. An e90 335d is faster than the R8 V8 from 50 to 80mph.
What "conditions" are those? That didn't sound likely to me, so I checked.
Google tells me 80-130km/h:
E90 335d : 5.2s
R8 V8: 4.3s

R8 from first video has 420PS while BMW M3 has 431ps. Also M3 is a lighter (R8 1635kg and BMW 1595 to 1635kg according to Wiki) and has double clutch gearbox. And there is 7 years difference.

Of course you don't sound confrontational.

Maybe my point is really about my perception that the R8 4.2 V8's performance metrics are not that great. In Canada, a R8 4.2 V8 with a manual costs $134,800, while the S-tronic costs $146,300. Claimed 0-100km/h acceleration is 4.4-4.6 seconds. The R8 4.2 V8 costs a lot more than a 991 Carrera S, and the S-tronic version is about the same price as a 991 GT3.

Sport Auto tested the R8 V8 and got a Ring laptime of 8:04 and 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.7 seconds.

These numbers are pretty good, especially when the car was launched many years ago. However, I think they are not that impressive presently, when other cars in its price range (or cheaper) offer better performance numbers.

So in the end, I'm not that interested in the car being "underpowered" or "overpowered".......if I was going to spend that amount of money, I do care about the performance numbers........and my honest opinion is that the R8 V8 is past its prime in that regard.

If I was going to buy a new R8 4.2 V8 now, I would be doing so for reasons OTHER than it's performance numbers.....that could be looks/style, driving experience/fun.

Hmmm. I remember reading that fact in an American auto mag and also thinking it was too good to be true. I guess it was!

That is expensive. Maybe it's a quirk of Canadian pricing. The prices are a little closer together in the UK and Germany at least, although the V8 is still overpriced. That's why I went for a V10. By the time you've added a few options that are standard on the V10 you're almost paying the same.

For me a real R8 is the V10 version only, because its motor differs itself from other sports cars, the V8 is standard.

All the right boxes? It has AWD. A 991 Carrera S RWD for me please. RWD, high revving, manual, and, ok, rear engine. I do't know if this matters that much. I myself prefer my engine in the front.

1. M3 F80
2. Carrera 991
3. M3 E90
4. Carrera 997
5. R8 V8

^^ for me.
