Re: VW Golf GTI W12 Concept (650Hp & 325km/h)

I knew it was only a matter of time before they would go ahead with something like this, for a concept at least. There was talk of a W8 MK4 Golf, that would have been interesting, but me likey this much better!!! If you were a gazillionaire would you write a check for one of these? I most certainly would!

Re: VW Golf GTI W12 Concept (650Hp & 325km/h)

Cool car, but an utter and pointless waste for VW at this time. Now surely if they can stuff a W12 into this car I can get a R36 Jetta out of these folks!

Re: VW Golf GTI W12 Concept (650Hp & 325km/h)

It's a dilly concept - but Bruce has come closest to appreciating the car for what it is. In concept it's identical to the Renaultsport Clio V6, only with double the engine! Remember, the engine is mid-mounted, so it's doubtful that the builders would go to some much engineering trouble just to make it AWD. The Clio V6 was also rear drive, using a tranversly mounted V6 mounted engine - effectively a FWD layout placed in the trunk of the car.

So, I suspect this is the same arrangement though I may be surprised and proven wrong!

Fun and rather trick I reckon. Why did they build it? Because they can.

I think to understand the reasoning behind this car you have to understand two things: 1) Dr. Martin Winterkorn and his attitude towards cars 2) The GTI/Golf culture. For "1)" Winterkorn wants to increase the brand equity in VW by developing more individualized/sporty products that cater to those seeking a unique experience, something different that won't break the bank. With that said, I believe he fully intends to change the way people look at Volkswagen, especially here in the U.S. As appose to being a default German equivalent of Toyota he wants VW's to have more German authenticity in the way they drive and handle, as well as better reliability and quality, style, and offer more technical highlights with a sporty character. At his core, Winterkorn is an engineer, which means he's a car guy and not a bean counter. He cares about a cars character and the experience from the seat of the pants. "2)", The GTI/Golf has a HUGE following the world over, people are always re interpreting the GTI/Golf in the form of crazy mods, from intense engine upgrades, to crazy paint schemes and other "out there' modifications. The Golf is also easily accessible, versatile, cool, and above all German. Those four things, I believe, are the pillars of the GTI/Golf's success and general popularity. Winterkorn will transform the VW brand the same way he did for Audi, building solid products that consumers want and desire in every way imaginable. I'm excited personally.

Re: VW Golf GTI W12 Concept (650Hp & 325km/h)

It must be said the real transformer of Audi from Saab/Volvo levels is Ferdinand Piech without his quattro and V8 which evolved to Aluminium A8 with W12 engine etc has really transformed Audi to where it is now.

Martin Winterkorn has just added onto that with the new strategy of MLP and the new aggressive model strategy :D

So I agree with Deutsch he will add and subtract FPs ideas to get it to run hopefully as close to efficency as Audi is now running.

Yeah I can see! I think VW pretty much has that image here in the U.S, but it the reliability and prices that hold them back from big sales numbers. I read something where they're going to move the Jetta and Passat down a notch next time, that is great news IMO. Especially since I'd like to have either one of them as a daily/winter car. I think VW can be transformed more into what you're talking about, but they've got to tackle their two biggest problems here in the U.S. - reliability and their absolutely awful dealer network. People I know with VWs absolutely hate their dealers, but they still love their cars.

This car is crazy, imagine, making the car look stock, and beating CGTs and 599s off the lights, that would be awesome!

If there were going to make a few of these, it would cost a lot, probably the price of an S65, who would pay that for a golf?
