What is your choice and why?

If you were to choose between a 3dr gti and the scirocco I would go with the scirocco but if you were to choose between the rocco and a 5dr gti then I would choose the GTI. Ive got a mk6 gt (still need to post pics :P) and I can only imagine what a GTI would be like.

I know people say 'well the scirocco is more special than the golf' which is true but in GTI form the golf is just as special ;)

This is a classic example of value vs exclusivty and it boils down to what you priorities are and what sacrifices you are willing to make. Undoubtedly, the Golf GTI is one of best cars money can buy. It's perfectly balanced in terms of power, size and gearbox -- prefection don't get any closer than that. The car is a mighty pleasure to drive, especially with DSG.

BUT it's a golf. One of the most comman cars on the road and blend in too well with the surroundings. Further more it has little swagger and the upright tail gate makes it my least favorite golf. The Scirocco on the other han is a head turner, especially in one of those fancy colours like the brigh blue or viper green. It has the star quality of a Lamborghini LP560.

Despite the driving experience offered by the GTI I would be willing to lose out a bit on the performance and opt for a Scirocco.

If you're going to modify the engine with a chip, then perhaps GTI is a better choice thanks to the electronical diff to eliminate wheelspin?

Are you planning any modifications Andreas?

LoL I need to get the car first before I go so far :D Besides I need to find a new apartment first, thats a priority number 1. I'm keeping my current car for some time. I still enjoy my car but I want a stronger engine next time. :D

I would go with the Scirocco. With it's same power it performs in the same level as the GTi and it looks much much better IMO.

According to AutoBild Sportscars:

GTi mkVI / Scirocco TFSI
-Power: 210 hp, 280 Nm (both, Scirocco MY2010)
-Vmax. 240 km/h (both)
-Weight: 1396 kg / 1376 kg
-0-100 km/h 6,9 s / 6,7 s
-0-200 km/h 27,7 s / 28,6 s
-60-100 km/h in 4th 5,3 s/ 5,2 s
-80-120 km/h in 5th 7,3 s / 7,2 s
-Fuel cons. 8,6 / 9,5 l/100 km
-Sachsenring: 1:48,7 / 1:47,5 min

Naturally the Z4 Coupe! :D

But if you for some reason can't get one then definitely the Scirocco. As you don't necessarily need the additional utility/space offered by the Golf, there is no need to choose it over the Scirocco. Plus the 'Rocco is one of the best looking small cars currently on the market, compared to it the Golf looks like it was designed by a bookkeeper. :D

There is a Stage 1 for Scirocco from BSR. Instead of 200hp/280nm you get 240hp/342 nm. And topspeed limiter up to 250km/h.

Standard vs Stage 1

80 - 120km/h: 3,9 / 3,5 sec (4th gear)
80 - 140km/h: 8,2 / 7,0 sec (5th gear)
100-150km/h: 7,2 / 6,1 sec (5th gear)

Hey Andreas,

Saw your PM and I thought I'd respond in this thread directly as I'd been meaning to.
I love the Scirocco, like Luw so aptly says, it has real star presence - something that the GTI lacks - when it comes to image and design. The GTI is a bit bland on the outside by comparison.

When I made my choice, I voted with a fair measure of personal subjectivity. As much as I prefer the exterior of the Scirocco, it's the 5 door GTI that stands head and shoulders above the Scirocco as a premium product. Why? Well for starters it's more luxurious and spacious. It's got a nicer interior design and being on the inside - which after all is where we most spend our time - is truly pleasant. I simply feel that, for the very minor trade-off in outright driver appeal, the 5 door GTI is by far the better all round value proposition. Mind that this does come from the perspective of a family man though. If I was young and single - the thought process would be decidedly different.

World Car of the Year or not...the Golf is bland looking and not to my taste at all.

I would go for the Scirocco, it looks the part and has the interior to match + wheels (Turbine spoke) looks great! The Scirocco has that 'sophisticated' look about it and it's a real value for money 'sports coupe', whilst also being practical.

I would love to have a new Z4 35i alongside my X6 50i in the garage...Though too expensive for me - just like the TT - BOTH overpriced IMO.
That makes the Scirocco just that more attractive - good looks, dynamics and engine at a reasonable price!
:t-cheers:

Andereas: is it a must to go for a new car ? I know you are keen on driving charectirstics and I don't believe any of those 2 can put a smile on your face, why don't you go for something you really love, even if it was slightly used ? I am thinking a Cayman S, or Z4M or Z4iS ? But Honestly, I'd advise you to go for a Cayman S manual. I dunno about sweden but in UAE and US probably, you can get good deals on used cars nowadays.

But Personally, I learned my lesson hard, never get a car that is boring and doesn't go or corner well. The GTi/Scirocco is none of those but is it really what you want? It might get some excited, but it does not excite me enough.

due to the crisis, my X6 depreciated so much that I could have gotten a 2009 v8 model 2009 or Cayenne turbo, or better yet, could've gotten slightly used any of those with 20K euro less with as low as 10km on the clock. And I believe, in 2 or 3 months , that sense of a new car joy is gone.

The cheapest 2006 Cayman S on the market here in Sweden today is about €40k or about €10k more than the Z4.

^ ^ ^

Yes , Doc - that's why the Scirocco makes sense to me. Good value for the money i.e. good looks, good powertrain and practical. With Porsche I think the consumer expect to pay a HUGE premium whilst their resale are very high here in the RSA. The Z4 is my personal favourite and pick of the bunch, though BMW's premium asking price is way much too high from 23i up to 35i.

In the end the Scirocco does not compare nor compete to either Caymen, Boxter, TT, SLK or Z4. Though if you do compare size, looks, dynamics, powertrain and then finally price...Scirocco is a real steal for a Sports Coupe...

Now your'e talking Sayyaaf! I have lost nearly 30% on my X6 35i when I traded it for the 50i ! The local car market took the plunge and followed the rest of the world in terms of car sales....Best of all, the few 50i's like the one I got with 12000kms on the clock is VERY close to new prices here...the local dealers insist there is still a waiting list...sales talk? I bet!!!

I'm searching for a new apartment so I need to buy a new TV, new furnitures. So my budget is limited :D

The ultimate car within my price range is Z4 Coupé 3.0si but like I said they are hard to get in Sweden. I was thinking about Audi TT but after driving the car a couple of times I have found out its not for me. It just feel like Audi A3 to drive, no roadster feeling at all. Z4 is much better.
GTI and Scirocco are two good choices I think.

wow that's almost the price of a new one here. How much is the GTi in comparison ?

Nice price! What would a secong (third?) hand 2006 Cayman S be in your market?

A properly speced GTi or Scirocco would just under €30k for new one and maybe €25k for a 2009 car with less than 10,000 km on the clock.

What other fun cars are there for about €30k?
Mazda 3 MPS?
Ford Focus RS?
