Golden Steering Wheel Awards.

German newspaper Bild am Sonntag has announced the six winners of its Golden Steering Wheel Award, a prize decided on by 25 select automotive experts from various countries. Seemingly the equivalent of a set of golden calipers, the Golden Steering Wheel prize is highly sought after by automakers and, if the translations we've read are correct, can be used the following year by each recipient in ads for the winning models. Below is the list of winners in each class.


* MINI Cooper - Small Car
* Volvo C30 - Compact Car
* Lexus IS - Luxury
* Volkswagen Eos - Convertible
* Mercedes CL - Coupe
* Hymer B-Klasse - Recreational Vehicle

I don't want to ruin the party, but Bild am Sonntag is a tabloid that is part of the Bild Zeitung (www.bild.de). They're not known for delivering trustworthy news and usually publish some contraversial stories (Cure for Aids Found!). Think of it like the British Daily Mirror, The Sun or Daily Sport newspapers.

So when they say 25 automotive experts, I have to wonder what really happened here. Don't get me wrong, all the cars on this list deserve recognition in some form or the other, but Bild am Sonntag picking cars is like Good Housekeeping doing a comparison between the A6, 5er and E-Class.

Well, I confess I read it too - when I am on the train going somewhere and need something "entertaining" to read.

Still, most Germans will tell you that the Bild Zeitung is very contraversial. They're only good for sports and celebrity news (the latter of which I don't care about).

Hmmm? Hymer B-Klass has won "best motorhome" in europe in 23 years in a row. It is a HUGH success and there are more of these in sweden than there are M5s! And they costs just as much.

hmm, i think that the IS is a nice car, but definitely not the best in its segment. That award should be german. 3er of A4.

I am surpriced that the Volvo C30 got an award. It seems that this car has potential. Not something common for Volvo...
