Automotive alliances have been big news in the past weeks, with Ford and Toyota forging a new partnership to develop hybrid pickups while the union between Suzuki and Volkswagen has publicly crumbled with wave after wave of disharmony. Now, the latest reports indicate that GM is looking to team up with BMW on engines and is interested specifically in the Bavarian company’s gasoline and diesel motors.
So while it’s an unsubstantiated rumor at this juncture in time, a partnership between GM and BMW focused on engine technologies is far from impossible.
BMW signed an agreement last week with Fisker to deliver up to 100,000 turbocharged four-cylinder engines for the company’s “Project Nina” sedan. BMW’s Chief Executive Norbert Reithofer has stated in the past that BMW could sell engines to other companies to boost profitability, provided that doing so wouldn’t hurt BMW’s market position or image.

Meanwhile, GM is at an advanced stage in developing fuel cell systems and could bring that and the Volt’s powertrain technology to the bargaining table, reported the Spiegel. BMW has shown a keen interest in alternative propulsion technologies with the launch of its eco-focused “i” sub-brand, and could conceivably be willing to share some of its piston engine secrets in order to strengthen and expand the sub-brand’s position.

Stephen Girsky, the GM board member in charge of strategy, has sought to initiate talks with BMW on “far-reaching joint projects” including engines, an article in the German magazine Spiegel stated. No source was cited for the article’s claim.
