Audi, Mercedes January sales beat BMW for global luxury-car lead

MUNICH (Bloomberg) -- Audi and Mercedes-Benz brand both outsold BMW brand in January, bumping BMW to third place in the ranking of the world's best-selling luxury carmakers for the month.

Audi took the top spot in January with global vehicle salesrising 10 percent to 137,700. Mercedes brand was No. 2 with a 14 percent gain to 125,865. BMW brand failed to keep pace with sales increasing 6.3 percent to 124,561.

"This looks like a pretty significant decline in growth compared with Mercedes and Audi," said Juergen Pieper, a Frankfurt-based analyst with Bankhaus Metzler. "I think this will continue during the next few months."

Both Mercedes and Audi have vowed to take the luxury sales crown by 2020. Last year Audi was No. 2 and Mercedes No. 3.

To underpin its effort, Audi plans to spend 24 billion euros ($27 billion) on new models and expanding production in the next five years. Mercedes this year is rolling out the new GLE coupe crossover to challenge the BMW X6 as the Daimler unit refreshes most of its SUV lineup.

BMW, the biggest maker of luxury cars since 2005, is under increasing pressure as models such as the 7-series sedan and X3 SUV age. The company struggled chiefly in China, where its dealers halted orders over a dispute about sales targets and bonuses.

Still, BMW plans to fight back. It's targeting a fifth consecutive record in annual deliveries backed by new offerings including a convertible version of the 2-series compact and an upgraded X6.

"There are a number of very exciting model launches coming up this year," Ian Robertson, BMW's sales chief, said today in a statement. "We are aiming for further growth in 2015, despite still challenging economic conditions in some markets."

Sales of BMW Group vehicles that include the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands rose 7 percent in January to 142,154. Demand for Mini-branded vehicles rose 12 percent to 17,373 compared with the same period last year. By comparison, sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars, which includes the Smart minicar brand, rose 15 percent to 134,322 units.

Weak January is traditional for BMW. Usually Audi sells more cars in first quarter than BMW, and then BMW sales kick in. Check sales figures form previous years.

Interesting! But wait till first 3 to 4 months to see how things will pan out. But this year they will be closer than ever!

No news at all. Pretty much the same as the last few years.
BMW will smash it again this year there is no doubt about that.
I expect Audi to leave MB in the dust this time around tho.

Impressive sales of the XJ. I'm surprised at how much of a lead the Panamera has over the Quattroporte, the Quattroporte is a much nicer car to sit in the back of, which is where most Chinese owners will be.

This is interesting and if you compare BMW 2014 sales against 2013, most key models sold less but they gained in numbers with the new models such as 2-series, 4-series, X5 and i models.

Yes but we have a very good act of volume models on the horizon - BMW 1er LCi , BMW 2er Gran Tourer , BMW X1 and the BMW 3er LCi.

That's because the 1 coupe and convertible were renamed 2-series. The same with the 3-series versus 4 series. The alternative for the X3, the X4, wasn't on the market in 2013.

If you count the sales 1 + 2, 3 + 4, X3 + X4 together you'll be able to compare them better:

2013: 1 series = 213,611
2014: 1+2 series (minus 2 AT 13,091) = 217,980

2013: 3 (+ few months 4 series) = 515,095
2014: 3 + 4 series = 599,794

2013 X3: = 157,303
2014 X3 + X4: = 172,603

If you take China sales out of the equation then worldwide Mercedes will be the best seller out of the 3 luxury brands. Its a close run between the 3 for sure.

Don't get the BMW boys started Rolf! I've been down that road. :ROFLMAO: Not for the sake of harping on that somehow MB is better than the other two, but for the simple reason of acknowledging the importance of the Chinese market these days and how far MB lags there.

I don't care if they're number 1 or 3 anymore, as long as they are successful and have enough money to keep on building the world finest 'luxury' cars and pushing the boundaries of automotive technology.

The highest quality of asphalt, no traffic jams, 4 lanes and clear markings. Did you enjoy it?

On topic; no doubt MB will eventually be number one again and restore the natural order, but boy am I loving every moment BMW takes the crown :D Even though I hardly care how many cars they sell, I just want them to continue to make the best cars in the world (both MB and BMW).

I knew my comment will get some people going on which is the best!! LOL! :ROFLMAO:
My 2 favorite luxury car brands are BMW and Mercedes Benz anyway, I am not an Audi fan that much (except the TT and A5 coupe which i really like alot). So if the 3 pointed star and Blue and White propeller can be ahead of 4 rings then I will certainly enjoy that!
