Yes Mercedes is an import (apart from the ML/GL/R), but there is nothing exotic about a Mercedes-Benz in general. The only exotic Mercedes are the Black Series cars and the SLS, all the rest a very common in the luxury car world. These people you talk with seemingly have no clue about what a Mercedes is.
Let me get this straight, these wealthy Europeans aren't bothered by buses, dump trucks and taxicabs Mercedes, but they're bothered by the A & B Classes?
Secondly their perception is just now changing in Europe? Their new perception of Mercedes because of their downmarket moves, yet the A-Class has been around since 1997? But in 2012 they're all of sudden worried about Mercedes image?
Mercedes doesn't operate in the same space as Rolls-Royce anymore, they haven't in years and years. Hence Maybach was created. Seems like the perception is extremely outdated.
Mercedes is the king of the working-rich brands, that doesn't include Rolls, Bentley, Aston, Maserati, Lamborghini or Ferrari.
You're going to have to look at the car in question and not just the brand anymore. Same goes for every luxury car brand in the space Mercedes plays in. They're all moving downmarket.
If the new S-Class arrives and it is all that and more, tech, styling, performance etc. and it trumps the class (like the S always does), and someone doesn't buy it because of an A-Class or B-Class they're just dumb IMO because they're a badge snob only. Utterly clueless decision.
A S, CL, SL is no less capable because of a A/B/C/GLK/CLA etc. Long as the upper cars do what they're supposed to do, Mercedes will be able to sell premium cars in the lower segments all day long. They've done it in Europe for years, yet they're image is still higher than that of BMW and Audi when it comes to prestige.
