Yes, I would have to go with the M-class as well.

2. Porsche (very close 2nd)
3. BMW
4. Audi

Complete package, not based on looks only:

1. Cayenne - the must unSUV character among true SUVs :)
2. X5 - still a bit too SUVish for my taste; I prefer the X6 (would choose it over Cayenne)
3. Q7 - minibus *** tank ... no, thanks
4. ML - it's a grandpa mobile now - not yet, perhaps in few decades ;)

The Cayenne is the least SUV-like, but somehow I think that that's a bad thing... in person, it seems extremely small, and it has no statesman-like stance.

It's interior, while extremely beautiful, feels a bit awkward when you're actually sitting inside it; the air vents and shape of the interior is extremely large and heavy-feeling, while its steering wheel and buttons are disproportionately small.

However, there's no denying that it is gorgeous and has a presence like no other SUV, so for that reason, my order is this:

1. M-Class
(2. Volkswagen Touareg - Although it is underpowered and only a VW, its interior has a stunning warmth, similar to that of Mercedes of the older generations. It is seriously good-looking on the outside as well.)
3. Cayenne
4. X5
5. Q7

X5 for me. The only SUVs of this size that I could live with would be the X5, RR or perhaps the Cayenne and ofc the X6. The rest are either too ugly or too massive.

My reply from the aborted thread.

Yup I would definitely pick RR sport over these - rugged yet sporty. Minus RR sport, a X5 35d, without the hideous M kit. As for new M class, it is good clean design, but looks too much like a minivan or R class with beefed up bumper from some angles -

It is the anti-thesis of the RR kind of SUV.
