According to an article in todays´ German-language edition of the Financial Times, it was confirmed that Dr. Martin Winterkorn has cancelled the Geneva salon world premiere of the Passat-based VW 4-door coupe concept. According to industry observers, Dr. Winterkorn has voiced some scathing criticism towards some of Murat Günaks´ (departing head of VWs´ design department) recent exercises and insists that modifications be made (courtesy of Walter da Silva + team) to a number of pipeline projects (Tiguan, IROC-based Scirocco, major Golf facelift). The possibilty was also not discounted that Dr. Winterkorn will indefinitely cancel other projects, the 4 door coupe being one of them.

I must say my most anticipated cars would be the Phaeton facelift/remake and the Passat 4-door Coupe. These new luxury products would show once and for all whether VW is still heading towards luxury or not.

I'm disappointed VW is not going to show the 4-door Coupe. :t-banghea

VW needs to forget about their luxury aspirations IMO. They need to go back to their roots of offering an upscale, fun to drive, well built alternative to Hondas/Toyotas/Fords/Mazdas etc. Forget trying to compete with Mercedes and BMW, that is Audi's job.

I agree. I sold VWs from 1998 until 2001, and during that time, only once did someone tell me that they were shopping VW and BMW. All that I ever heard was Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Hyundai or a US manufacturer.

This upmarket move has been a disasterous mistake for VW in the US. In Europe, the VW brand carries soem prestige, but in the US, people still think of VW as Rabbits, MkII Jettas and even aircooled Beetles.

I hope they become serious players in the $15K to $30K range and leave the upmarket stuff to the brilliant people at Audi!

VW: Product plan 2009-2011 leaked

We just got word from an inside source of ours on Volkswagen’s product plan for 2009 – 2011. First up is the new, sixth generation Golf (Rabbit in the States) that will be available in most European markets by early 2009. In the summer of the same year, VW will launch the next generation Polo that will compete in the supermini segment against the likes of the new Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 207. Towards the end of 2009, the German automaker will reveal the new Touran 7-seater minivan and the Golf Plus, both of which are based on the Golf.

In early 2010, Volkswagen will take the wraps off the all-new Passat Sedan and Station Wagon models while later in the year, the Germans will uncloak the second generation Touareg SUV that will go on sale in late 2010 or early 2011. Last up is the all new VW Beetle that will be available in most markets during the first quarter of 2011.

That's too long..

That's TOO late.. I thought that in late March i could lay my hands on an new Polo...

:t-cheers:

AUGUST???? Maaaaan, a close friend has a 207 now, but has to choose a new lease car soon, and he really wants the Polo......I guess he will have to settle with the new Ibiza then, that's as close as he can get.....

Bummer.

China
Passat Lingyu and Sagitar (Jetta V) facelifts will debut next month at the Shanghai Auto Show in April.

South America

With the current economic crisis in mind, I wonder if VW really plans to bring a 2nd generation Phaeton. :eusa_thin

Also, I hope the Golf VI Variant will look much less Korean than the current one.
