Damn, the 5 Series sells so well worldwide, it's practically as common as some very popular appliance cars! I wonder where its best market is? In the U.S, Sales aren't too exuberant, especially compared with the E60 which I think had even higher, or at least very similar sales?

europe probably, since it sold 31k there

That would make sense in part by the fact that apparently the 5 GT sells apparently okay in Europe as well.

SHOCKER IS THE 5 SERIES SELLING BETTER THAN THE C CLASS...

Yep, that's a shocker. 5er not only selling better than A6/E-class, but also outselling A4/C-class!!! Especially since Q1 2012 5er sales are down -3.7% compared to Q1 2011 sales.

Mind in 2011 5er achieved was all-time record sales - topping 300k mark (even w/o GT sales included!!!).

I'm also shocked E-class sales have fallen so behind 5er & A6 sales this year.

Regarding biggest (cumulative) market for 5er ... it's still Europe (2011: 143.804; Q1 2012: 31.961), Germany being biggest single market for 5er (2011: 59.756; Q1 2012: 13.603). Eg US market 5er sales figures ... 2011: 51.491; Q1 2012: 12,709.

BUT ... China has emerged as BMW's biggest single market in Q1 2012 which I guess also means it becomes best single market for 5er!

The Corolla may be boring, old fashioned and ugly, but it's a resistant car. Just pay attention next time you see a news report on Afghanistan and you'll see the streets of Kabul full of Corollas. They are everywhere!

The position of the E-class relative to the 5 and A6 would be worrying MB immensely, especially if the 'e-coupe' numbers are included. These are bread and butter models with healthy margins to be made. The question begs, why is the E selling so poorly when it was once the class mainstay? Is the styling really that polarising? Is it technically too conservative? Where have they missed the boat? It might explain why the FL is rumoured to be so massive.

This is like the E60 in reverse.

Americans love the bold and "unique" tones, therefore they buy it enough to where it's showing class leading sales (yeah I know Coupe/Sedan blah blah VS Sedan/5GT blah blah, but looking at the numbers we have available), yet in ROW, perhaps the styling is too bold and polarizing for this class?

Taking off my enthusiast hat, who loves the W212 for its uniqueness, its homage to classic M-B with a future twist, and how it reminds me of what I love about M-B. For the fact that IMO it aesthetically shames its "classmates" when put alongside them in terms of character and presence.
.... Objectively, and this is after driving an F10 M-Sport last week and posting my impressions of how *I DON'T REALLY THINK IT HANDLES THAT MUCH BETTER OR IS LESS FLOATY THAN AN E-CLASS ANYMORE, AND THAT PEOPLE ARE STILL ACTING AS IF IT DOES MOSTLY DUE TO IDEALS RATHER THAN TECHNICAL FEEL* on the F10 Board.
If one isn't passionate about the M-B brand, or doesn't care about the W212's nods to classics such as the W126, or doesn't like its more fussy and individual styling elements or super sharp angularity, or doesn't plan to own the car for a long time, therefore doesn't care about its focus on engineering rather than tech, and its relative simplicity already showing it to be the most reliable/quality build in class....
..... Then it's hard to justify why buying one over an F10. Where the F10 lacks aesthetic drama (which will work to its advantage to the masses), it really hurts the E "on paper", and many people buy by paper. Not to mention, as I mentioned before, I feel the drives are similar, in fact, F10 owners view the E as being *TOO HARSH OVER ROUGH ROADS*.... Imagine that.... 5-Series owners saying the E is too harsh and rough (Sports Package). The F10 has brought in M-B's sense of luxury to many extents, and still held a SLIGHT handling advantage, and the F10's interior isn't as teutonic or rigid, but it's more dazzling and elegant. Objectively, if one isn't married to emotive connections or the styling of either, then the E becomes a harder sell.

I understandable that 5-series is selling so well. The car looks good and its one of the best cars in the world. In sweden its been outselling the 3-serie the last months.
E-class need the facelift ASAP to keep up with A6 and 5-series in terms of sales.

The 5's Lease rates could have something to do with it as well. Although the E still leads the 5 in U.S sales, and M-B heavily subsidizes the E's Leases, the 528i is far cheaper to get in than the E350, which is pretty impressive considering the E's U.S sales VS the F10, especially considering how much the E60 outsold the W211.

IMO, aside from the E lacking in tech and features, I think that like the E60, the W212's characteristic look and more outward styling is working against it in Europe, but for it in the U.S, compared to the comparatively passive and simpler 5 and A6's.

In Europe taxisales for the E-class is sales boost.

Regarding sales in US perhaps BMW should include M-package in the base price to increase sales.

BMW are actually discontinuing the regular "Sport Package" on the F10 for 2013, and only using the "M Sport" as the Sport Package choice. I believe for the second year in a row, they're dropping the price of it, WHILE decontenting the package. Hilariously it now offers NO suspension differences or any differences aside from the aesthetic bumpers/wheels and flurry of "M" badges. Even the AMG Sport offers a different suspension!

It's sad, because all those M badges should get the car at least a lowered suspension or something performance related, at the very least, but also because M-B whoring the AMG Package is obviously forcing BMW to stop treating their "M" package as special and exclusive-to-enthusiasts as it once was. I wish M-B never gave the AMG Sport Package away for free, but I'm sure it's helped their sales in the short term, while in the long term, it just kills any specialness of the AMG Sport Package, and makes it the "entry choice". I wouldn't have found the urge to modify my car much at all if the AMG Package was still somewhat exclusive.

Supply in China was constrained for a few months earlier this year due to retooling. ;)

That would make sense. Being in the U.S, where the E still outsells the newer 5, and then spending some time in France, Germany, London this year, the W212's are everywhere. I think in each place I was, I saw a lot more than 5's (in EU though that's skewed considering the vast majority were Taxi's).
