So is this step in the nose cone compulsary or are there ways around it, like Macca did.

In simple terms the Charlie Whiting and his FIA mob have decided that for the safety of drivers the noses have a maximum height this year, so that in a T-Bone style collision the nose of a F1 car isn't high enough to slam into the head of another driver. From a team perspective you want to have a high nose as possible to maximise the amount of air passing over the floor and diffuser of the car. High noses got trendy from 2008 when rear wings were shrunk and the only way to recoup the lost down force would be to have a much air as possible travelling over the floor to the diffuser. That is why teams are working hard to package the engine, gearbox and rear diff as tightly as possible to maximum the floor surface, like seen in the photo of the Renault from above.

Mclaren though have opted for a low nose in favour of air passing over, instead of under, the nose and over the "wings" the MP27 has moulded together with the side-pods. The most interesting nose is the one on the RB8. It's hiding something, possibly an F-Duct sort of device which Mercedes are too likely to run based on the nose they were testing towards the end of last season.

Mclaren are still intent on being the lord of exhausts. Last year during pre-season testing they failed at making their octopus exhaust work. This year they are intend on bending the regulations by putting body work around exhaust and seemingly directing the fumes over the brake ducts. The car though, is amazingly gorgeous.

Seriously the FIA should fix the silly wings and nose and put a "make it look sexy rule" under witch all ugly cars will banned and teams finned 100 million euros:D.
 
New HRT makes Barcelona track debut

The new HRT F112 completed its first laps at the Barcelona circuit on Monday ahead of its grand prix debut in Australia in less than two weeks.

The Spanish squad took advantage of the filming day regulations in order to shake down its new car after having been unable to get the car ready in time for the Barcelona test last week.

Indian Narain Karthikeyan was the man in charge of driving the car in its maiden outing late in the afternoon at the Circuit de Catalunya, after a frantic effort by the team to get the car ready in time.

Karthikeyan's team-mate Pedro de la Rosa was at the track following the proceedings.

The HRT car will be powered by Cosworth engines for the third year in a row.

HRT's car was unveiled on the same day as rivals Marussia, although the Anglo-Russian team is yet to pass all the mandatory crash tests. The Marussia was in action at the Silverstone circuit.
